Introduction.

"Can you hear what they sing" has been written to offer teachers material that can be directly used in class. It offers language teachers material which can be adapted with various input for their own classroom work. The authors hope that it  will be equally useful to teachers and their pre-intermediate level students who want to develop listening skills.

The overall aim of the manual is to present English popular songs as  a way to improve the level of students' listening habits.

The activities are presented in an accessible and teacher-friendly way, with a clear identification of teacher and learner roles. "Can you hear what they sing" illustrates activities which teachers can use as models to refine learners'  listening ability and to develop their learning  capacity with the help of popular English songs. As for the  students, their task is to learn to understand the main content of not very long  and difficult texts and distinguish specific  information.

In this brochure teachers can find information about singers and groups; diagnostic, progress and achievement tests, ten popular English songs with exercises  based on them. All exercises connected with every song were divided into three groups.

The first group is intended for introduction of the information about singers or band.

The second  group is for preparing the sudents for  perception of the text. The aim of these exercises is to overcome  phonetic, grammar, vocabulary difficulties. Students, for example,  guess the meaning of the  new words from the context, match English words with their Russian equivalents, choose the appropriate variant of translation and etc. The main task of these exercises is presenting information about the meaning of the unknown words and phrases  which is necessary for understanding the text.

Exercises of the third group are intended for developing of students'  skill to understand English texts. They listen o the song, find key-words, put the sentences in a right order, choose the form they've heard. Correct mistakes and etc.

There are keys for all groups of exercises at the end of brochure and photocobible materials for using them in class.

R. Stewart " I'm sailing"

Roderick David Stewart (born January 10, 1945 in Highgate, London) is an English born singer and songwriter of Scottish descent, most known for his uniquely raspy, gravelly voice and personable singing style, as exemplified in his signature song "Maggie May".In a career now entering its fifth decade, Stewart has sold over 100 million records worldwide. Although the quality of his recordings has dipped at times, he is widely recognised as among the best interpretive singers of recent times, and has consistently been a presence in the charts since the early 1970s.Stewart was the youngest of five children born to Robert and Elsie Stewart. His parents owned a newsagent's shop in North London, and the family resided above the shop. Minutes before Rod Stewart was born, a German V-2 rocket hit the police station just down the street and exploded. Rod Stewart started as an apprentice footballer with Brentford F.C. based in West London. He soon switched to a career in music joining folk singer Wizz Jones in the early 1960s as a street singer travelling around Europe; this resulted in his being deported from Spain for vagrancy. Stewart also worked as a gravedigger during this period.Rod Stewart returned to London in 1964 to join Long John Baldry's Hoochie Coochie Men which recorded a single "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" which failed to chart. The Hoochie Coochie Men evolved into Steampacket featuring Stewart, Baldry, Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger, Mickey Waller and Rick Brown. Steampacket supported the Rolling Stones and the Walker Brothers in the northern summer of 1965 and would also record an album that would not be released until 1970 when Stewart had become well-known in musical circles. Stewart also earned the nickname "Rod the Mod" in that period after an appearance on a BBC documentary,1965, on the Mod movement.Stewart sang with the Australian group Python Lee Jackson for a short time. During this time, he sang the lead vocals in the influential In a Broken Dream, which was released in 1970 and went on to become a worldwide success in 1972.The US band Cactus offered Stewart a job as lead singer but he decided to join The Faces with Ron Wood. (Wood had played bass guitar with the Jeff Beck Group, but wanted to switch to guitar. The Faces were previously The Small Faces until the departure of Steve Marriott.)Stewart also signed a solo recording contract. An Old Raincoat Won't Let You Down became his first solo album in 1969; it was known as The Rod Stewart Album in the US. It established the template for his solo sound: a heartfelt mixture of folk, rock, and country blues, all informed by a British working-class sensibility, with both original material ("Cindy's Lament" and the title song) and cover versions (Ewan McColl's "Dirty Old Town" and Mike D'Abo's "Handbags and Gladrags") being very effective.For the body of his early solo work Stewart earned tremendous critical praise. Rolling Stone's 1980 Illustrated History of Rock & Roll includes this in its Stewart entry:Rarely has a singer had as full and unique a talent as Rod Stewart [...] a writer who offered profound lyricism and fabulous self-deprecating humor, teller of tall tales and honest heartbreaker, he had an unmatched eye for the tiny details around which lives turn, shatter, and reform [...] and a voice to make those details indelible. [... His solo albums] were defined by two special qualities: warmth, which was redemptive, and modesty, which was liberating. If ever any rocker chose the role of Everyman and lived up to it, it was Rod Stewart. In 1975, Rod Stewart moved to the US, applying for citizenship due to his love affair with Britt Ekland and a fight with the UK tax authorities. He released the Atlantic Crossing album with producer Tom Dowd and a different sound, based on the Muscle Shoals rhythm section. Later in 1976, Stewart topped the Billboard singles charts for eight weeks and the Australian singles charts with the glossy seduction ballad "Tonight's the Night" (an accompanying music video featured Ekland). In 1981, Stewart added elements of New Wave and synth pop to his sound for the Tonight I'm Yours album. The title song and "Young Turks" both reached top 5 of the Billboard charts with the album going platinum.Stewart's career then went into a relative slump. He only had three top ten singles between 1982 and 1988 and only 1983's Camouflage album went gold in the UK. A reunion with Jeff Beck produced a successful take on Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready", but an attempt to tour together fell apart after a few dates.In 1988, he returned with Out Of Order produced by Duran Duran's Andy Taylor and by Bernard Edwards of Chic. "Forever Young" and "Lost in You" from that album were both significant hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and mainstream rock charts. ("Forever Young" was an unconscious revision of Bob Dylan's song of the same name; the artists reached an agreement about sharing royalties.)

Stewart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994  .In recent years, Stewart has concentrated on singing 1930s and 1940s pop standards from the "Great American Songbook", written by songwriters such as Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin, with great popular success but middling critical success. These albums have been released on Clive Davis's J Records label and have seen Stewart enjoy album sales equal to the 1970s.

In 2000 Stewart was detected as having thyroid cancer. Besides being a major health scare, the resulting surgery also threatened his famous voice, and he had to re-learn how to sing. Since then he has been active in raising funds for The City of Hope Foundation charity to find cures for all forms of cancer, especially those affecting children.

Stewart has remained physically active in recent years, playing in a senior football league and still kicking balls into the audience during concerts. As a fan he is a well-known supporter of Celtic F.C. and the Scotland national team. In appearance Stewart still maintains his trademark rooster-style haircut.

Madonna "You'll see"

Supreme female of the 1980’s music scene, Madonna’s vixen look – bad hair dye, bare midriff, short skirts and crucifix – inspired teenagers and terrorized their mothers. The astute business woman signed a $60million deal with Time Warner in 1992, founded her own super-successful music label, Maverick, and developed her reputation as a serious actress.
The ambitious girl of Italian descent won a scholarship to the University of Michigan in 1978. Impatient for stardom, she quit in her second year, moved to New York, worked shifts and started to battle for gigs.
Her boogie-tunes caught the ear of DJ Mark Kamins. He introduced the dancer-singer to Warner Brothers, who promptly signed her up. First she was a hit in the New York club scene, then 'Holiday' leapt across the radio waves, putting. When it was first played on the radio and in clubs, many fans mistook Madonna for an Afro-American disco diva. Record company also didn't put Madonna's picture on this single's cover, they wanted people think that she was Afro-American, to sell more recordshe single into America’s Top 20

Not only was Madonna setting the tone music wise, she was also creating a whole new fashion. In "Lucky Star" music video, she showcased her Boy Toy image. Madonna's style was so popular that world famous lingerie store 'Fredericks of Hollywood' reported a 40 % increase in sales, which they put down to the Material Girl's image.
Since year 1985, Madonna is known as a person who can do anything: she is a singer, an actress, a composer, a producer and an executive. Madonna has success everywhere. She has broken every available radio, video, sales, and box-office record, racking up no fewer than 29 Top Ten singles, 11 of those reaching No. 1.It's world record! 1994's "Take A Bow," lodged in the top spot for seven consecutive weeks and beat the performance of her 1984 breakthrough, "Like A Virgin," which had a six-week run at the top.
All told, Madonna's No. 1 and No. 2 singles have spent a total of 40 weeks at the top of the charts -- almost a solid year of uninterrupted hits! Every studio album she has released has reached Top 15. All, but one has made it into the Top 10, and seven have attained Top 5 status. Madonna's international album sales are estimated at topping 120 million units. Pivotal as recorded music is to Madonna's unparalleled success, she has had more videos, played more often, than any other artist in the history of the MTV network. Multi-awarded for these videos, Madonna has made a ground-breaking contribution to the video art form, as she has in her unstoppable sell-out music tours that combine music, theatrics, spectacle, and dazzling charisma and have packed stadiums globally for nearly two decades.
Those big heartbreakers mean of course big money and that's why (according to several business magazines) Madonna is the richest woman in the world followed closely by Oprah Winfrey. Madonna makes about 130 millions US$ for a year !!! Continuously released albums, singles, music- videos and movies hold Madonna's myth high.

Scorpions " Wind of change".

Rudolf Schenker, the bands rhythm guitarist, set out to found a band in 1965. Things began to come together in 1969 when Schenker's younger brother Micheal and vocalist Klaus Meine joined the band. After Rudolf and Klaus split with Michael and their bass-player and drummer, they joined a band called Dawn Road, which consisted of Francis Buchholz (bass), Uli Roth (guitar) and Juergen Rosenthal (drums). Together they decided to call this new band "Scorpions".They released their first studio album, Lonesome Crow, in 1972. The band released successive studio albums nearly every year through the rest of the 70s. They backed the albums with a lot touring in Europe and came to Japan in 1978. Their first concert in America took place at a festival in Cleveland, Ohio in 1979. By the early 80s a succession of strong singles and a predictable album schedule combined with heavy touring earned the band name recognition to heavy metal fans internationally.In 1982, the video for the song "No One Like You" from the Blackout album secured heavy rotation on the nascent MTV exposing the band to a mainstream audience eager for more Scorpions music. The 1984 release of Love at First Sting finally secured the band massive commercial success with American audiences. Powered by the success of the single "Rock You Like A Hurricane" the Scorpions assumed a premier role in heavy metal. They were able to headline their own shows selling out large concerts. Mainstream success also meant mainstream criticism however. The American marketplace saw protest of the Love at First Sting album cover and some large chains and record clubs would not carry it - mimicing a gag from the satire movie Spinal Tap that came out that same year.The band enjoyed a high degree of success through the early 1990s thanks to the release of the Crazy World album in 1990 and the single "Wind of Change". The song muses on the socio-political changes occurring in Eastern Europe and in other parts of the world at the end of the Cold War. They were the first western group to play in the former Soviet Union. On July 21, 1990 they joined many other guests for Roger Waters' massive performance of The Wall in Berlin. Scorpions performed both versions of "In The Flesh" from The Wall.In 1993 the Album "Face the Heat" was published. The album opened with the heavy metal song "Alien Nation", considered by many headbangers to be the Scorpions' best work. For the following ten years, the Scorpions would experiment with their music, trying to attract fans of styles such as hard rock, grunge, alternative and others. They also experimented with pop-rock, philharmonic orchestra, and unplugged, but never equalled their success in the 80's.

Song 5.

Roxette  "Dangerous

13 albums, about 40 singles, several tours in 18 years. Yes, that's Roxette. The pop-duo from Sweden, today, its members, Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle, are known all over the world. But let's see how it all started...

Roxette was formed in 1986 by Swedish musicians Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle. Formerly both Marie and Per had been singing only in Swedish in various bands, but their record company, EMI Svenska, suggested that they should do something together. Per translated one of his songs (Svarta glass - Black Glasses), which he recorded in English with Marie. "Neverending Love" was the beginning of a story of success, what we've been calling Roxette for 17 years now...

Next year, the album Look Sharp! was released, with the first hit single called "The Look". People in Sweden loved it, but nobody knew Roxette outside the country at that time. The international debut of the band has a strange story indeed... An exchange student from the US bought the album in Sweden, and after getting back to Minneapolis, he took the record of "Look Sharp!" to a local radio station, called KDWB. The DJ of the radio liked "The Look" a lot and started to play it. Soon, copies of the song started to spread from station to station - until it was a major hit throughout the country (without even being officially released).

Early 1989, the record company released "Look Sharp!" worldwide, and "The Look" went immediately No.1 in many countries. The album sold 8 million copies all over the world. This year, Roxette began their first European tour. Following "The Look", "Listen To Your Heart", "Dangerous", "Chances" and "Dressed For Success" were released as singles.

The third album, "Joyride" was a massive success. Besides getting to No.1 in many places, the video for the first single, "Joyride" was shown 12 times a day on MTV. The album was followed by a huge tour, starting in 1991, containing 108 concerts all around the world, playing for over 1,7 million people. The album, which features hits like "Big Love", "Fading Like A Flower (Every Time You Leave)"

Westlife "When you looking like that"

Westlife is an Irish boy band group who got their claim to fame performing as the opening act to a 1998 Backstreet Boys show in Dublin, Ireland. They are managed by Louis Walsh and Ronan Keating. Who are these two people you ask? Ronan Keating is the lead singer of the Irish pop group "Boyzone" while Louis Walsh is the manager of Boyzone. Boyzone is a wildly popular pop group in Europe and Asia where they have scored numerous #1 hits. Sadly, the only Boyzone hit to make it to this side of the ocean (that is North America) was "No Matter What" on the "Notting Hill" Soundtrack. Westlife was originally composed of 6 friends from Sligo, Ireland. Three eventually left the group, and Nicky and Brian joined the group in their place. Westlife was originally called IOU. Westlife soon shot to popularity with the release of their debut song "Swear It Again" in April 1999. The song hit #1 in the UK. It was followed by 4 more #1 songs...a record in itself within the UK. "If I Let You Go", "Flying Without Wings", "Seasons in the Sun/I Have a Dream", and "Fool Again" all shot to #1 in the UK.

Bryan became the first married member of Westlife in January 2002. He married Kerry Katona, formerly of Atomic Kitten. They both have a daughter, Molly, who was born in September 2001.

Westlife scored their 10th UK #1 in February 2002 with World of Our Own (see the Charts section for detailed info on their hit songs). Later in the fall, Westlife scored their 11th UK #1 with "Unbreakable"They embark on their 2nd major UK/Ireland in April 2002. This tour ended in June 2002.

American fans were ecstatic upon hearing that the group's long awaited second attempt at the US market would occur in late summer. However, the ecstasy quickly faded when the group did not make any public promotional attempts. Whether it was the group's decision or the record company's (RCA Records) decision on the failed promotional attempt remains a mystery. Although they made a new video for "World of Our Own" just for a US release, they never actually did promotional effort for their album in the US. And the US video was a pretty nifty video to say the least, different from their prior video releases. Without much of any promotion, the song climbed on Radio and Records CHR/Pop charts, peaking at #41 on radio airplay. In some cities, the song reached as high as #2 in popularity in nightly chart countdowns, including Providence, Rhode Island. The release of the album in early October was shelved indefinitely. The group currently has no plans for a US release.

Starting this winter and spring, they embarked on a European tour in support of their "Unbreakable/Greatest Hits Album". Craig David "I'm walking away"

Craig Ashley David was born in Southampton on May 5th 1981 to parents Tina and George. He was a good student at Bellemoor Secondary School achieving many GCSE passes including his favourite subject History, and while there he took part in a number of plays and school concerts. However his first love has always been music, and especially R&B artists like Terence Trent D'Arby, Michael Jackson, R Kelly and Donell Jones. He began writing his own material at twelve and at fifteen began MCing at the local club his father was chairman of. He teamed up with DJ Flash and the pair also did spots on pirate radio station PCRS 106.5FM. In time he got interested in the Garage scene and soon met another local boy Mark Hill, one half of Artful Dodger, who encouraged him to develop his own songs...

Craig David's big break came in late 1999 when after being massive in the clubs, Rewind by the Artful Dodger got a full release and major airplay on UK radio. Artful Dodger are Mark Hill and Pete Devereux and also hail from David's home town of Southampton. Craig met Mark while DJing in the clubs and the two wrote the track that would eventually become Rewind. Since his solo success Craig has also contributed a cameo to Artful Dodger's third hit Woman Trouble. Although it seems like a little of luck that Craig was in at the start of the commercial success of Garage, he believes it has as much to do with hard work.

Born To Do It, Craig's first solo album, was released in the UK on August 14th and instantly made no 1. It has gone on to be no 1 in many other countries including Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Malaysia. More R&B than garage the album reveals the smoothness and dexterity of his vocal talents as well as his strong song-writing skills. The title may seem a little arrogant but is actually taken from Craig's favourite film while growing up Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. In that the candy man is asked how he makes such great candy. But rather than explain he just replies that you wouldn't ask a fish how it swims or a bird how it flies because they were "born to do it".

Craig's favourite track from the album, because it has the best production values, is Follow Me. Many reviewers however dissed the artist a bit for this song as it portrays Craig as a Casanova and at such a young age what would he know about these things... It's a cool track nevertheless and no doubt many of his female fans would follow him to his bedroom if they could...

 Garage probably began in 1995 when Armand van Helden first starting mixing house and drum'n'bass. Other artists followed suit including Rip and MJ Cole. Two-step Garage began to appear in late 1997 and by 1999 artists like Artful Dodger, Shanks and Bigfoot and DJ Luck and MC Neat began to get airplay and eventually full commercial success. The underground scene has moved on and is still evolving. Craig David is not really considered a garage artist - his main thing is R&B but there's no doubt the success of the movement has been important to his career too...

The song that launched Craig David's solo career was Fill Me In. Musically it's an astonishing mix of a two-step chorus with R&B verses but more than that lyrically it takes an everyday teenage situation of lovers sneaking behind parents' backs and puts it into a song that's fresh, and almost conversational in its construction. The video started with Craig performing in the sort of set-up he must have been used to in his pirate radio days, and continues by portraying the story in the song. It also includes a few shots of Craig walking the ledge outside his girlfriend's window. The single debuted at no 1 in the UK on 9th April and caused quite a stir in the industry. Since then the music press have been branding him the future of UK music and rightly so. At the 2000 Music Of Black Origin awards (MOBOs) the song won Best R&B Act and Best UK Single and Craig also received the award for Best UK Newcomer.

The 2001 Brits (the UK equivalent of the US Grammies) should have proven to be good for Craig David as he had received the most nominations ever in the history of the event. The previous record-holders were Blur in 1996. The categories Craig was nominated for were Best British Album (main competition Radiohead and Coldplay), Best British Dance Act (Artful Dodger are also in the running), Best British Male (could Craig beat Robbie Williams?), R&B/Urban (which surely had Craig's name on it already), and Best British Single and Best British Video (both for '7 days'). The ceremony was on February 26th, and sadly our boy received no honour although he did perform at the event. Maybe it proves what an all-round entertainer he is - whatever, I'm sure a long career will provide plenty of prizes...

Dire Straits " Money for nothing"

Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, the group built their sound upon the laid-back blues-rock of J.J. Cale, but they also had jazz and country inflections, occasionally dipping into the epic song structures of progressive rock. The band's music was offset by Knopfler's lyrics, which approximated the winding, stream-of-conscious narratives of Bob Dylan. As their career progressed, Dire Straits became more refined and their new maturity happened to coincide with the rise of MTV and the compact disc. These two musical revolutions from the mid-'80s helped make Dire Straits' sixth album, Brothers in Arms, an international blockbuster. The band -- along with Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, and Steve Winwood -- become one of the leaders of a group of self-consciously mature veteran rock & rollers in the late '80s that designed their music to appeal to aging baby boomers. Despite the band's international success, they couldn't sustain their stardom, waiting a full six years to deliver a follow-up to Brothers in Arms, by which time their audience had shrunk significantly.

Knopfler (born August 12, 1949) was always the main force behind Dire Straits. The son of an architect, Knopfler studied English literature at Leeds University and worked briefly as a rock critic for the Yorkshire Evening Post while at college. He began teaching English after his graduation, leading a pub rock band called Brewer's Droop at night. By 1977, Mark was playing with his brother David (guitar) and his roommate John Illsley (bass). During the summer of 1977, the trio cut a demo with drummer Pick Withers. A London DJ named Charlie Gillett heard the demo and began playing "Sultans of Swing" on his BBC show Honky Tonkin'. Following a tour opening for Talking Heads, the band began recording their debut for Vertigo Records with producer Muff Winwood in early 1978. By the summer, they had signed with Warner in America, releasing their eponymous debut in the fall. Thanks to the Top Ten hit "Sultans of Swing," Dire Straits was a major success in both Britain and America, with the single and album climbing into the Top Ten on both sides of the Atlantic.

Dire Straits established Dire Straits as a major force on album-oriented radio in America, and their second album, Communique (1979), consolidated their audience, selling three million copies worldwide. As the group was recording its third album, Knopfler left the band to pursue a solo career; he was replaced by former Darling member Hal Lindes. Like its predecessor, Making Movies was a sizable hit in America and Britain, even though the band was criticized for musically treading water. Nevertheless, the record went gold on the strength of the radio and MTV hits "Romeo and Juliet" and "Skateaway." Dire Straits followed the album two years later with Love Over Gold, an album filled with long, experimental passages, plus the single "Private Investigations," which became a number two hit in the U.K. The album went gold in America and spent four weeks at number one in Britain. Shortly after the release of Love Over Gold, former Rockpile drummer Terry Williams replaced Withers.

During 1982, Knopfler began exploring musical avenues outside of Dire Straits, scoring the Bill Forsyth film Local Hero and playing on Van Morrison's Beautiful Vision. Apart from releasing the Twisting by the Pool EP early in 1983, Dire Straits were quiet for the majority of 1983 and 1984, as Knopfler produced Bob Dylan's Infidels, as well as Aztec Camera and Willy DeVille; he also wrote "Private Dancer for Tina Turner's comeback album. In the spring of 1984, the band released the double album Alchemy: Dire Straits Live and by the end of the year, they had begun recording their fifth studio album with their new keyboardist, Guy Fletcher. Released in the summer of 1985, Brothers in Arms was Dire Straits' breakthrough album, making the band international stars. Supported by the groundbreaking computer-animated video for "Money for Nothing," a song which mocked music videos, the album became a blockbuster, spending nine weeks at the top of the American charts and selling over nine million copies; in England, the album became the biggest-selling album of the '80s. "Walk of Life" and "So Far Away" kept Brothers in Arms in the charts through 1986, and Dire Straits played over 200 dates in support of the album. Once the tour was completed, Dire Straits went on hiatus for several years, as Knopfler produced records by Randy Newman and Joan Armatrading, scored films, toured with Eric Clapton, and recorded a duet album with Chet Atkins (Neck and Neck, 1990). In 1989, he formed the country-rock group Notting Hillbillies, whose sole album, Missing...Presumed Having a Good Time, became a British hit upon its spring 1990 release. During the extended time off, John Illsley recorded his second album; the first appeared in 1984. In 1990, Knopfler reconvened Dire Straits, which now featured Illsley, Clark, Fletcher, and various session musicians. The band released On Every Street in the fall of 1991 to great anticipation. However, the album failed to meet expectations -- it only went platinum in America and it didn't crack the U.K. Top 40 -- and failed to generate a hit single. Similarly, the tour was a disappointment, with many tickets going unsold in both the U.S. and Europe. Once the tour was completed, the live album On the Night was released in the spring of 1993 and the band again went on hiatus.
