There is a story about the American flag that happened in 1776. Early that afternoon, the door of Betsy Ross’s shop opened. She looked up from her sewing, amazed to see General George Washington in her shop. Behind him were Robert Morris and her uncle, George Ross. General George Washington was the leader of the American army.. But most people were a little afraid of him. Betsy Ross greeted the three men with a curtsey. Then the General spoke. He said that he and the man had come to ask her a favor. They wanted her to make a flag. George Washington told Betsy Ross that this would be the first flag of the new nation, the United States of America. Betsy Ross led the men to the room in the back of the shop. All eyes were on General Washington as he unfolded a drawing of the new flag. The flag had 13 red and white stripes. In the corner of the flag were 13 stars. The stars were in no real order. Each of the stars had six points. Betsy looked at the drawing. She suggested that the stars would look better in a circle. A star with five points would look better. Betsy worked hard for a week. First, Betsy cut out 13 five-point stars with one snip each. Then, with small, straight stitches, she sewed the stars onto a piece of blue bunting. It was not easy. Betsy sewed and resewed the stars until they were perfect. The stripes were not so hard to make. But she had to sew them many times to make sure they would stay together. At last, Betsy Ross was pleased with her flag. She hoped that the General would be pleased, too. And he was. The history of the flag
Symbols of the USA The eagle became the official national symbol of the country in 1782. It has an olive branch and arrows. You can see the eagle on the back of a dollar bill. The United States of America has an anthem too. It is called “The Star - Spangled “. One of the most famous symbols of the USA is the Statue of Liberty. France gave the statue to America in 1884 as a symbol of freedom. The Statue is in New York on Liberty Island.
Washington , the capital of the United States is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. The district is named in honour of Columbus, the discoverer of America. Washington was founded in 1791 for the purpose of serving as the capital of the United States of America. George Washington chose the place located midway to keep at close touch as possible between the states. Washington is quite new as it didn't exist for two hundred years. The population of the city is nearly million people. It is not a very large city, but it is very important as the capital of the USA. There is a law in Washington against building structures higher than the Capitol; therefore it presents a different appearance from New York with its skyscrapers. Washington has many historical places. The largest and tallest is the Capitol, where the Congress meets. It is a very beautiful building with white marble columns. Not far from the Capitol is the Library of Congress. It holds five million books. The White House, the residence of the president is the oldest structure in the capital and one of the most beautiful. It was built in 1799. Washington
An anthem of the USA Oh, say you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so Gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs Bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore dimly seen through the Mists of the deep, Where the foe’s haughty host in dread Silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o’er the Towering steep, As it fitfully blows, now discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam, in full glory reflected now shines on The stream: “ Tis the Star-Spangled Banner! O long May it wave O’er the land of the free and the home Of the brave. Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall Stand Between their loved homes and the War’s desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, for our cause It is just, And this be our motto :”In God is our trust”. And the Star-Spangled Banner forever shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
