(INTERLOCUTOR CARDS)

TASK 3.1  (4-5 minutes)

TASK 3.2  (4-5 minutes)

You are discussing with your friend (a student) where to go out.

The student begins the conversation.

This is you think about each option:

-

+

Fast food

restaurant

They serve junk food (not healthy) which contains much fat and cholesterol.

There's no choice: only hamburgers, French fries and a few salads.

There are always a lot of people and it's difficult to find a vacant place.

I can't stand the atmosphere. It's really noisy as they are playing loud music.

They are quite quick to serve.

It's not very expensive.

There is a variety of burgers at every restaurant so we have choice.

Cafe

It's rather expensive.

We may have to wait long till the dish is cooked.

People are usually allowed to smoke and I don't really like eating while somebody is smoking.

They serve all types of food: fish, steak, pastas of different types and fresh vegetables.

The service is polite and unhurried.

Atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable.

Chinese

restaurant

Dishes are too spicy.

Food there is so unusual, we might have stomach problems.

They mix pineapples, ham and mushrooms in one salad and I don't like eating such things.

They serve exotic food and it's nice to try something you haven't tasted before (something new).

The oriental atmosphere is exotic; we will see waiters in national costumes.

Service is efficient and friendly.

Food is of very high quality.

It's expensive but worth it.

Pizza

restaurant

Even vegetables pizzas contain much fat.

All these restaurants are downtown.

Pizza cooked at home is tastier.

Servings there are so big that can never eat it up.

Pizzas are very tasty. You won't be able to resist.

Pizza is very rich; one piece is enough to feel full.

They are cooked to original Italian recipes and only fresh ingredients are used.

Note: Make sure all the options have been discussed.

When discussing each option first use the information that is contrary to what the student says. You may choose to make use of some ideas only.

Do not speak first all the time but ask the student what she/he think about the options.

Invite the student to come up with her/his suggestions, especially if she/he readily agrees with the things you say.

If student says all the time: "What do you think about it?" without expressing her/his own opinion, say: "Sorry, I don't know" or "I'm not sure. How do you feel about it?"

SKILLS TO BE TESTED:

The student is expected to demonstrate her/his ability to:

initiate and maintain conversation;

come up with suggestions;

give good reasons;

find out her/his partner's attitudes;

invite the partner to come up with suggestions;

agree or disagree with her/his partner's opinion;

reach an agreement by taking into account the partner's attitudes.

TASK3.3 (4-5 minutes)

You are discussing with your friend where to have a school-leaving party.

This is what you think about different options:

+

-

At school

I like this idea because this party should be held in the place where you can feel the atmosphere of brotherhood and friendship.

Besides, you can invite as many guests as you like.

It will be difficult to get prepared- we'll have to cook and serve food ourselves.

Instead of enjoying the party some of us will have to entertain others during the party.

Our school assembly hall is not equipped for such kind of a party, it has got only a microphone.

A café

I am very much in favour of this idea: we can have all the things done by the café people and just enjoy the party.

We can choose a café well-equipped for parties.

It will be much more expensive than having a party at school.

I'm afraid we won't feel the atmosphere of a school leaving party.

A countryside

I'm ready to consider this point: it's great to do everything in the open air.

It can create a special unforgettable atmosphere.

We can make a barbecue which is delicious. I think everybody will enjoy it.

I've enough experience of camping and can get the necessary tourist equipment.

I'm not sure everybody can do without conveniences even during two days camping /electricity, gas, electrical appliances/

We'll depend on weather conditions.

All the options must be discussed.

You shouldn't say everything at once. Use the information throughout the discussion to encourage the student to say as much as possible.

Use the information contrary to what the student has said first.

In case the student invites you to come up with your suggestions all the time say: "Sorry, I'm not sure" or "I really don't know. What you think?"

SKILLS TO BE TESTED:

The student is expected to demonstrate her/his ability to:

initiate and maintain conversation;

suggest ideas;

give good reasons;

find out partner's attitudes;

invite your partner to make suggestions;

agree or disagree with the partner;

reach an agreement.

TASK 3.4 (4-5 minutes)

You and your brother/sister are discussing the arrangements for the coming birthday party. There are several options and you have to come to an agreement.

-

+

Home party with your relatives

Oh, so boring. You can never have real fun with grown-ups around. They always tell us what we should do and we shouldn't.

It's good to see all the relatives at once; it's not that often we can do it; besides they usually give good presents.

Home party with your friends only

I think our flat isn't big enough and we cannot invite as many people as we would like. Besides the neighbours are mad about the noise we make and we usually have to apologise afterwards, promising it was the last time.

That's great. We could do whatever we'd like to.

A disco bar

Oh, no! It's so crowded, stuffy in there; a lot of drinking. Some people can be really nasty to you. You can't choose the music you like; besides, it can be too expensive.

I like the idea. All sorts of music, a lot of dancing. You can make friends with some other nice young [people.

A barbecue party in the countryside

What if it rains?

It takes a lot of time to find a suitable place. Then, how shall we get all those people to the place?*

Wonderful! We could find a nice place, make a fire, enjoy some delicious meal! Play ball games or badminton. We could walk in the forest or at the seaside.

*Student or the Interlocutor (depending on the situation) may say, "By cars or by train."

Note: Make sure all the options have been discussed.

When discussing each option first pick the information that is contrary to what the student says.

The student is expected to demonstrate her/his ability to:

initiate and maintain conversation;

come up with suggestions;

give good reasons;

find out her/his partner's attitudes;

invite the partner to come up with suggestions;

agree or disagree with her/his partner's opinion;

reach an agreement by taking into account the partner's attitudes.

TASK 3.5 (4-5 minutes)

TASK 3.6 (4-5 minutes)

You and your friend are discussing different possibilities for a summer holiday. This is what you think about each of them:

-

+

Seaside

There is not much to do expect staying on the beach all the time. It may be boring.

Air tickets and accommodation could be expensive.

If we are to cook ourselves, it might take a long time.

It's nice and warm there. Lots of fruit.

I enjoy going to the beach.

We could go to the cinema, discos, concerts.

We could rent a room in a private house and cook meals ourselves or we could have meals in cafes.

Mountain resort

I'm not strong enough, it might be tiring.

Not much to see; nowhere to go out.

They say driving in the mountains is dangerous, there might be car accidents.

It's fascinating to climb the mountains.

We could see some beautiful views, rare plants.

It is so exciting; I think it's worth going there.

Camping

It can be awful if the weather is bad: rainy or cold.

It's too quite; very few people.

There might be snakes, some wild animals.

Millions of mosquitoes. We won't be able to sleep at night.

We could put up a tent.

We could enjoy peaceful countryside; picturesque scenery; walks in the woods for berries and mushrooms.

It's usually so quiet that you can't help nearing birds singing.

Sightseeing tour

We won't have enough time to relax, it will take much time to do the sights.

We could make a mess out of the holiday rushing to see so many places.

We could visit many world famous places.

We could do the sights, go to museums, learn a lot of exciting things.

Note: Make sure all the options have been discussed.

When discussing each option first use the information that is contrary to what the student says. You may choose to make use of some ideas only.

Do not speak first all the time but ask the student what she/he think about the options.

TASK 3.7 (4-5 minutes)

You and your friend are asked to arrange some out of school activities. You are discussing all the options to decide which one you would both like to be responsible for.

The student begins the conversation.

-

+

Disco

There is no good equipment to play music.

It's difficult to please everyone, tastes differ.

We don't have a good DJ, it's expensive to invite one.

There's good equipment at school to play music.

There's also a good collection of CDs.

I know a very good DJ. Let's invite him (he can do it almost professionally).

Football match

Not everyone is a sporty person.

Normally it's just boys who enjoy playing football.

Our sports ground is not good for playing football, it's too small.

We don't have a professional referee.

Girls /those who aren't sporty people/ can be fans.

We could hold a mini football match.

We could ask the teacher of PE to help us.

Hike

The weather can be rainy and cool.

Many people may not want to go hiking because of mosquitoes.

We will have to carry heavy things.

Many people like fresh air and beautiful scenery.

We could play volley-ball, go fishing, pick mushrooms.

It's very romantic to sit round the fire, sing songs.

Musical

Few students can sing well.

It's difficult to find a suitable scenario.

It will take a lot of time to stage a musical.

It will be difficult to make costumes and scenery.

Musicals are very popular now.

We could find the scenario in the  Internet.

Modern plays need neither scenery nor expensive costumes.

Note: Make sure all the options have been discussed.

When discussing each option first use the information that is contrary to what the student says. You may choose to make use of some ideas only.

Do not speak first all the time but ask the student what she/he think about the options.

Invite the student to come up with her/his suggestions, especially if she/he readily agrees with the things you say.

agree or disagree with her/his partner's opinion;

reach an agreement by taking into account the partner's attitudes

TASK 3.8 (4-5 minutes)

You are discussing different accommodation possibilities in London.

These are your ideas about each of them:

-

+

A host family

We wouldn't have much chance to be on our own, we would have to follow the family rules, e.g., coming home before 11 o'clock, washing up, cleaning. Besides it could be a long way from school.

I like this idea, we could get to know better the English people lifestyle; we could talk a lot, discuss things with them, practise our English.

A youth hostel

We would have to think of meals either cooking ourselves or buying the takeaway food or going out to a restaurant, which might be rather expensive. I don't mind buying the takeaway food occasionally, but I hate cooking.

Apart from that we might have to share a bathroom and other facilities; think of some possible regulations concerning the time.

It might be not bad: more freedom, could make a lot of friends, some of them might be very annoying though.

A hotel

It's very expensive. I'm afraid my parents wouldn't be able to afford it.

That's a tempting idea. It takes care of all the inconveniences we've talked about.

You don't have to say everything at one go. You should use this information throughout the discussion to encourage the student to say as much as possible. To keep the conversation going you should first say the part that would be contrary to what the student has said. Finally you'll have to come to an agreement but only after you have discussed all the three options. In case the student invites you to come up with your suggestions all the time without sating what she/he thinks, you may say: "Sorry, I'm not sure about it." or "I don't really know. What do you think about it?"

SKILLS TO BE TESTED:

The student will have to demonstrate her/his ability to:

initiate and maintain conversation;

suggest ideas;

express her/his own point of view providing reasons;

express her/his feelings;

find out her/his partner's attitudes and take them into account;

reach an agreement.

TASK 3.9 (4-5 minutes)

The student begins the conversation.

You are talking about a present you would both like to give your friend Ann for her birthday. Make sure that you discuss all the things on the list.

This  is what you think about each option:

-

+

A book

I don't know what kind of books Ann likes.

I know that Ann is fond of reading.

A compact disc

I'm not sure if Ann has a CD player to play it.

A CD is always a good present.

A video cassette tape

I don't know what films she likes: comedies, thrillers or something else.

I know she enjoys watching videos at home.

A toy

I'm afraid Ann has got a lot of toys because they are very popular present.

Everybody likes big soft toys like teddy-bears, cats, dogs.

A pop concert ticket

I don't know what groups or singers Ann likes.

She likes pop concert.

The student is expected to demonstrate her/his ability to:

initiate and maintain conversation;

come up with suggestions;

give good reasons;

find out her/his partner's attitudes;

invite the partner to come up with suggestions;

agree or disagree with her/his partner's opinion;

reach an agreement by taking into account the partner's attitudes.

TASK 3.10 (4-5 minutes)

You and your friend are discussing where to take a group of students from GB and the USA.

The student begin the conversation.

-

+

Ballet

It's mostly classical and our English and American friends can see that at home.

Russian ballet is very good.

Russian folk dancing

I like this idea. Foreign students will enjoy it.

It's very colourful and full of rhythm.

It's part of Russian culture.

Classical music concert

I may agree to take them to this concert, however, I don't think many young people are interesting in classical music.

Pop concert

I don't think Russian pop singers are popular in the West.

I'm not sure that our foreign friends will like our pop singers.

I like pop music and often go to pop concerts.

When discussing each option first use the information that is contrary to what the student says. You may choose to make use of some ideas only.

Do not speak first all the time but ask the student what she/he think about the options.

Invite the student to come up with her/his suggestions, especially if she/he readily agrees with the things you say.
