- Read the following dialogue to find out the information about Olympics.
- I’m not feeling very well today.
- You must be out of tune. Try doing some exercise.
- Excuse me?
- The ancient Greeks believed that the mind and body could only be in tune if a person did both intellectual and physical exercise. Plato, Aristotle and Homer all encouraged gymnastic exercise.
- Did they invent gymnastics?
- I don’t know but I’m sure they thought about it!
- If gymnastics isn’t what I do in the gym, what is it?
- Gymnastics as we know it developed in Germany and Czechoslovakia at the start of the19th century. The German Friedrich Ludwig Jahn is known as the father of gymnastics and he invented some of the apparatus still used today.
- Appa-what?
- Apparatus. It means equipment. There is a lot of apparatus in gymnastics. Something to do with the fact that there are a lot of different events.
- I heard about events where the men climb ropes and swing clubs.
- Ah, not any more. That was a long time ago. Nowadays the apparatus includes the parallel bars, the vault, the rings, the balance beam, the pommel horse...
- “Pommel horse”? Never mind. Did Ludwig Jahn compete at the Olympic Games?
- No. He died about 50 years before the modern Olympics began.
- When did the first women’s event start?
- Actually as far back as 1928.
- Some of the most famous gymnasts are women, I think.
- That’s right, and very young too. Nadia Comaneci and Nellie Kim both got perfect 10 scores at the 1976 Games when they were 14, but nowadays gymnasts have to be 16 to compete at the Olympics.
- By the way, do you know the origin of the word „gymnastics‟?
- It comes from the Greek word for ‘naked’, and early gymnasts used to perform without any clothes on.
- Really? That was the Summer Olympics and not the Winter Olympics then?
- Ha! Ha!
- Decide if the following statements are true (T) or false (F) according to the text.
1. Plato, Aristotle and Homer thought that gymnastic activity was a good thing. ( )
2. The ancient Greeks used the same apparatus that is used in gymnastics today. ( )
3. A lot of different equipment is used in gymnastics because there are a lot of different events. ( )
4. The age limit for gymnasts at the Olympic Games has changed since 1976. ( )
5. Olympic gymnasts will compete without any clothes on at London 2012. ( )

- Read the text.
The Paralympic Games.
- The Paralympic Games were started by a doctor called Ludwig Guttmann who worked in a London Hospital. He organized sport as part of a programme for people with certain injuries to improve their self-esteem. The “Games for the Paralysed” were first held in 1948 to coincide with the London Olympics. It was after this that the idea really took off.
- The first official Paralympics took place in Rome in 1960, when athletes from twenty-three countries took part in wheelchair sports. Blind and visually impaired sports were included for the first time in the 1972 Heidelberg Games. Gradually, disabled people in different categories were invited to take part. Today, there are six categories and fifty levels of disability.
- Since the 1988 Seoul Games, the Paralympics have always been held in the same venues as the Olympics and Paralympics in the same place. When countries want to host the games, they have to consider the Olympics and the Paralympics as a single event.
- The Paralympics are sometimes confused with Special Olympics which is a programme that focuses on year-round sports and training for all people with an intellectual disability, not only talented athletes. The Special Olympics strongly encourages participation as much as competition. Their motto is: “let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
- The Paralympics has a much greater age range than the Olympics. In the 2004 Games, for example, 11-year-old Chinese swimmer Qing Qing Xu was the youngest athlete, while 66-year-old Canadian sailor David Williams was the eldest. At Sydney 2000, the competitors’ ages ranged from 11-year-old Polish table-tennis player Natalia Partyka to 65-year-old Australian sailor Noel Robbins.
- Today, the Paralympic Summer Games are the second largest sporting event n the world, the first being the Summer Olympics. The rise in its status is excellent news for disabled athletes, since it isn’t just athletes that benefit. Organised sport has changed the lives of all disabled people. Technical improvements, such as sports wheelchairs and lightweight limbs for athletes have become part of everyday designs and now make life easier for a huge number of disabled people.
- Are these statements about the Paralympic Games true or false?
- They take place at a different venue from the Olympic Games. ________
- The Paralympics and the Special Olympics are the same._____________
- Children can take part in the Paralympics.________________________
- Match headings 1-6 to paragraphs A-F n the text.
- Involving people with different disabilities._________________
- Becoming as important as the original Games. _________________
- Helping the athletes helps other disabled people too._____________
- Building people’s confidence.______________________________
- Taking part s as important as winning.________________________
- Crossing the generations.___________________________________
- Discuss these questions:
- How important are the Paralympics in Russia?
- Do you know if the Paralympics have ever been held in Russia?
When? When are they next going to happen in Russia?
