C3. Imagine that you preparing a report with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the report and you want to read the text to your friend whose role will be played by the examiner. You have one minute to read the text silently, then be ready to read it aloud.

  A Typical British family used to consist of a mother, a father and two children. But in recent years there have been many changers in family life. For example, since the low made easier to get a divorce, the number of divorces has increased. That’s why 24% of British children live with only one parent, usually their mother.

   The contemporary British child doesn’t have a lot of companionship from brothers and sisters, because the average family has only one or two children. Most British children live with their parents at least until they finish school at the age of 17-18. Then many go away to college, leaving some parents sad and lonely in their empty nest and others enjoying their release from parental responsibilities. Older people take pride in their independence, enjoy their freedom and don’t want to be a burden to their children. The telephone, the car and the airplane keep them in close contact even when they live in different parts of the country.

DVD Photo Memories Set to Music Birthday Anniversary Family Vacation Wedding Graduation

Imagine that you have some photos of your family. Choose one photo to present to your friend. You have one minute to think it over.

When presenting the picture remember to mention:

  • When you took the photo
  • Who is in the photo
  • What is happening
  • Why you took the photo
  • Why you decided to show the picture to your friend

You have to talk continuously, starting with: I’ve chosen a photo number…..

Keys: To begin with, I have chosen the photo number 2. It was the 1st of June 2014. That day we celebrated my granddad’s birthday. There are many traditions in my family. And one of them is to celebrate all festivals together.  It was a happy day. All relatives gathered together to congratulate my granddad. It was his 82 birthday.   In the photo you can see my granddad, my granny, my parents and my brother. My granny and my mum cooked a lot of tasty things, they baked a very delicious cake. My brother and I decorated the room, we bought candles, colorful ribbons and balloons. There were a lot presents. My father and my mother presented him a new shirt. My granny created an interesting album with photos of all our relatives, it was really touching to look at the photos of my grandparents when they were young.   My brother and I bought a bouquet of flowers. We talked a lot, and in the evening my granddad blew out the 82candles. At the moment I took the photo. It was so wonderful day, my family were happy, we had a lot of fun. Also, I am proud of my granddad because he took part in the Great Patriotic War, and was awarded with two orders of Red Star. I decided to show you the photo because I love my family very much and I am proud of my parents and grandparents.

You will speak for not more than 2 minutes. You have to talk continuously.

Keys: In the pictures you can see two families. The families are happy. In the first picture you can see a mother, a father and a child. The parents are kissing their lone son.  In the second picture you can see a mother, a father and two children. They are a brother and a sister. The sister is elder then the brother. It is clear that all members of the family are happy, they love their children, and the children love their parents very much, they are laughing. But, the questions are “ would you like to have a brother or a sister?” “ ,” What are advantages and disadvantages of having brothers and sisters?” . Many people think it is good to have brothers and sisters, others do not agree. Let us consider what the advantages and disadvantages of having them are.

   First of all, sisters and brothers are very close to each other. As for me, I have a sister and I have a person to talk to and I can share my personal secrets with her. Another good thing is that brothers and sisters look after their parents when they become old. It is really difficult to take care of an old person, who is sometimes mentally handicapped, but it is easier to overcome difficulties together, for example my mother’s brother always helps her to take care of my old granny, because my granny is 81, and she  really needs it.

    Other people think that younger brothers and sisters are a problem. They have to share their rooms. I suppose, they interfere in the life of each other and it means nothing is safe, but my sister always understands me. There is one more opinion about it. Sometimes parents don't have enough money to satisfy their children’s needs. In my family we always decide together how to spend money.

    In conclusion, I believe brothers and sisters make our life more comfortable and calm. People who have them are lucky, because brothers and sisters change our life for the better.

Give a talk about a role of sisters or brothers in the life of teenagers.

Remember to say:

  •  if you have a brother or a sister\if you would like to have them.
  • what the advantages  of having brothers or sisters are;
  • What the disadvantages of having brothers or sisters are;

You have to talk for 1.5–2 minutes. The examiner will listen until you have finished. Then he/she will ask you some questions.

What’s your favourite season? Why do you like it?

Task 1 (2.5–3 minutes)

Let the student talk for 1.5–2 minutes.

Ask only those questions which the student has not covered while giving his/her

talk:

1) Have you got a brother or a sister? Would you like to have a brother or a sister?

2) What are the advantages of having a brother or a sister?

3) What are the disadvantages of having a brother or a sister?

All these topics must be covered.

Finally, you must ask each student the following questions:

1.  What are the pluses of being the only child in the family?

2.  How many children would you like to have in the future?

You play the part of a student in an international language school. You should prepare a report and a presentation about a generation gap. You need to meet a school psychologist

( Mrs. White) to discuss the problem.

 Ask the school psychologist to help you  

 Answer her questions about the reasons of generation gap

 Answer her questions about the solutions of the problem

  accept the invitation to the computer class to make the presentation

You begin the conversation. The examiner will play the part of the school psychologist.

 mention all four aspects of the task

a chat.

 Find out if she/he knows the solutions of the problems

 Invite the student to the computer class to make the presentation

Student: Hello, Mrs. White!

Mrs. White: Hello!

Student:  Could I ask you for a favour?

Mrs. White: Yes, what is it?

Student: I should write a report and make a presentation about а  generation gap. Could you help me to find some information.

Mrs. White: Sure. Do you know anything about the problem? What are the reasons of generation gap?

Student: Adults always complain that the young are not they were. Adults always teach the young how to live. The young know what they want. They prefer to make there own mistakes rather then to listen to the warnings of the adults.

Mrs. White: Do you have the same problemы in your family?

Student: My mum and dad treat me like a baby. They do not let me out at night during the week, they always ask me about the boys/girls, my father thinks I am being lazy when I sit watching the telly at night

Mrs. White: Can you see the solution of the problem?

Student: Certainly. Sometimes I feel relaxed and happy with my family. My parents understand me and help me when I need their help. They support me when I need it. From time to time they help me to overcome my difficulties and to cope with my problems

Mrs. White: I think that the only way to solve the problem both the young people and adults should be tolerant and patient, because there are no clashes of values in your family and your parents are your best friends.

Student: Thank you. Could you help me to make the presentation?

Mrs. White: With pleasure. How about meeting in the computer class in the evening? We will try to find some information in the Internet.

Student: Thank you, I will bring some books from the library.

Mrs. White: See you soon!

Student: See you later.
