1. Because of its origin, Canadian English has a great deal in common with the rest of the English spoken in North America and is often difficult to distinguish for people who live outside the region. To British people, Canadians may sound American; to Americans, they may sound British. Canadians themselves insist on not being identified with either, and certainly there is a great deal of evidence in support of this view.

1. The roots of Canadian English can be found in the events which followed the American Revolution of 1776. Those who had supported Britain found themselves unable to stay in the new United States, and most went into exile in the Ontario region of Canada. From there they spread to all parts of the country. They were soon followed by many thousands who were attracted by the cheapness of land.

2. The legal limit for driving after drinking alcohol is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood when tested. But there is no sure way of telling how much you can drink before you reach this limit. It varies with each person depending on your weight, your sex, if you've eaten and what sort of drinks you've had. Some people might reach their limit after only about three standard drinks.

3.  British or American, the language is basically the same, and its global stature is backed up by massive English-language training programs, an international business that in textbooks, language courses, tape cassettes, video programs and computerized instruction - is worth hundreds of millions of pounds or dollars to the economies of the US and the UK. The English language is now one of Britain's most reliable exports.

4.  Anyone who is familiar with American media receives the impression that Americans are not too far removed from the days of the Wild West when guys with guns took care of business, both private and public. 6.   Nearly 600 international restaurant owners, chefs and journalists participated in the poll to rank the best restaurants worldwide. Britain is infamous for its bland and uninspiring food, which is scoffed at by the more sophisticated palates of its French neighbours.

1. In the East, the Atlantic Provinces had been settled with En glish speakers as early as 1497. when the British explorer John Cabot claimed Newfoundland, but even today these areas contain less than 10 per cent of the population, so that they have only a marginal role in the development of the Canadian 'norm'. In Quebec, the use of French language and culture remains from the first period of explo ration, with the majority of people using French as a mother-tongue: here, English and French coexist uneasily.

Asked why they did not do physical exercise 49 per cent of girls said that they did not feel comfortable exercising in front of other peo ple, 35 per cent said they did not have time, 34 per cent said they did not look good in exercise clothes, 33 per cent said they did not want to look too muscular and 30 per cent said they were no good at sport. Almost half the girls (47 per cent) said they would rather dance or do yoga than take part in traditional sports.

6- France had only eight restaurants in the top fifty and London was named in March by Gourmet magazine as the Gourmet Capi tal of the World. Ella Johnston, editor of Restaurant magazine, said British people are now «becoming more adventurous eaters».

Happy Workers are Better Workers

A study at_large factory shows that «happy» workers are less in work-related accidents and likely to be A22_________cidenls, than «serious» ones. The «happy» workers also tend to be more creative, and are sick less often. The researchers began their study by examining photographs of 4,686 employees who participated in the research. 1.  Coca-Cola is enjoyed all over the world. «Coca-Cola» and «coke» are registered trade marks which identify the same product of The Coca-Cola Company. About 2 billion gallons are sold every year, in over one hundred and sixty countries.

2.  The drink was invented by Dr John Pemberton in Atlanta on 8 May 1886, but it was given the name Coca-Cola by his partner, Frank Robinson. In the first year, only nine drinks a day were sold.

3.  The business was bought by a man called Asa Candler in 1888, and the first factory was opened in Dallas, Texas, in 1895. Coca-Cola is still made there. Billion of bottles and cans have been produced since 1895.

The literature of England is one of the highest achievements of a great nation. The language in which it is written evolves over hun dreds of years and is still changing. Several nations, including Cana da, the United States, and A22 ______are indebted to England for a literary heritage.
