1. Christopher Columbus decided to sail west as he was sure that our planet was round. There were 3 caravels: the Santa Maria, the Nina and the Pinta. After sailing 4000 miles he reached some land. Columbus thought that it must be India but it was not. It was a new land - a new continent.
2. Before Europeans arrived in America, Indians lived in tribes. The tribes were very different: some grew their food, some ate the food they could find. There were also tribes of fishermen and hunters. They lived in wooden houses, or wigwams, and thought that there were spirits around them - in trees, mountains, fire or water.
3. This city is one of the largest cities of the USA and of the world as well. It is an important centre of culture. Some people say it is the cultural capital of the world. This city is situated in the northeast of the country.
4. British people now have more free time and holidays than they did twenty years ago. Nearly all British people have four weeks’ holiday a year. The normal working week is 35-40 hours, Monday to Friday.
5. This Day is a traditional national holiday in the USA and some other English speaking countries. It has become a tradition with Americans to get together on this day.
6. This city is the capital of Great Britain. It is its political and business center. It stands on the river Thames.
7. This holiday is an originally religious celebration that has become a popular holiday in many countries, especially in the USA and Canada. It is celebrated on the 31st of October.
