My Native place

My native town is Kemerovo. It is situated in Kuzbass, one of the most important industrial coal-mining and chemical regions of our country.

Kemerovo is a young town. It was founded 90 years ago on the bank of the river Tom. At that time Kemerovo was a little village Sheglovka by name.

Today Kemerovo is a beautiful modern city with a population over 500 thousand people. You can see a lot of high buildings, wide streets, green parks, nice squares and theatres in my native town.

The town is rich in different sights such as picturesque quay [ki:] and Veseniya street with a scenic lane of heroes. The main square is the Soviet Square. It is very large with administrative buildings round it. It is the place of mass demonstrations, meetings and festivals. There are many monuments in Kemerovo: the monument to Pushkin, to Michailo Volkov, to those who died defending our Motherland during the Great Patriotic War. The theatrical square with  a beautiful fountain attracts people like a magnet. This is the attraction of the beauty: sweet music, water streams, flowerbeds, colourful windows of the theatre. All these make a good impression on the citizens and they want to go there again and again.

Kemerovo is a cultural centre of Kuzbass. The Kemerovites and the visitors can visit the Drama and Musical Comedy Theatres, the Concert Hall, the Circus, different museums and picture galleries.

Kemerovo is a town of students. There are several higher educational institutions in it: the State University, the Medical Academy, the Politechnical University, the Institute of Culture, the Institute of Food Technology. Besides there are some technical vocational schools. That’s why there are so many students in the centre so that it seems full of noisy crowds. But the suburbs of Kemerovo is rather calm. Such villages as Zhuravli, Krasnaya, Berezovo give us rest in their green woods. Unfortunately our town is heavily industrialized. So the ecological situation is difficult. Lots of coal mines, chemicals and machine-building plants pollute the environment greatly.

My native town is famous for its celebrated people – heroes (Vasiliev), doctors (Podgorbunskiy), pilots (Martemianov), astronauts (Leonov), writers (Grishkovets), actors (Panin), talented conductors (Lin Tao) and journalists (Svetlakov). These people make a valuable contribution to the development of the town and bring it fame.

Kemerovites are proud of their city and I quite agree with them. Kemerovo is my home, that’s why it’s very dear to me. There is no place like home, I think.
