Natural disasters
Every year different natural disasters happen in our planet.
An earthquake happens when tectonic plates of the earth move and they make the area shake violently. According to the Richter scale the magnitude of earthquakes is measured from 1 to 10 points. The most powerful earthquake was recorded in 19 5 0 in India, its magnitude was 10 .
A tornado is a spinning , whirling wind. When it meets with cold air it takes the shape of a long tunnel of tube , reaching down from a large cloud. If this huge , twisting rope of air hits the ground , it may cause great damage .
A hurricane is a type of storm called a tropical cyclone which forms over tropical or subtropical waters. When a storm s maximum sustained winds reach 74 mph , it is called a hurricane .
A drought is a period of time when an area or region experiences below-normal precipitation. The lack of adequate precipitation , either rain or snow can cause reduced soil moisture or groundwater , diminished stream flow , crop damage , and a general water shortage. Droughts are the second-most costly weather events after hurricanes.
A flood happens when water overflows or soaks land that is normally dry. There are few places on Earth where people don’t need to be concerned about flooding. Generally, floods take hours or even days to develop, giving residents time to prepare or evacuate. Sometimes, floods develop quickly and with little warning.
During an avalanche, a mass of snow, rock, ice, soil, and other material slides swiftly down a mountainside. Avalanches of rocks or soil are often called landslides. Snowslides, the most common kind of avalanche, can sweep downhill faster than the fastest skier.
A tsunami is a series of ocean waves that sends surges of water, sometimes reaching heights of over 100 feet (30.5 meters), onto land. These walls of water can cause widespread destruction when they crash ashore. These awe-inspiring waves are typically caused by large, undersea earthquakes at tectonic plate boundaries . When the ocean floor at a plate boundary rises or falls suddenly, it displaces the water above it and launches the rolling waves that will become a tsunami.
1. A period of time with no rain 2. A shaking of the ground 3. A large mass of snow falling down the side of a mountain 4. An extremely violent wind or storm 5. A huge wave caused by an earthquake which flows onto land 6. A violent wind storm which consists of a tall column of air spinning around very fast tornado 7. Large amount of water that covers an area which is usually dry flood Read and guess. drought earthquake avalanche hurricane tsunami tornado flood
