The Silent Way Method of teaching English
методическая разработка по английскому языку
The Silent Way is a language-teaching method created by Caleb Gattegno that makes extensive use of silence as a teaching method. Gattegno introduced the method in 1963, in his book Teaching Foreign Languages in Schools: The Silent Way.
Gattegno was critical of mainstream language education at the time, and he based the method on his general theories of education rather than on existing language pedagogy. It is usually regarded as an "alternative" language-teaching method.

The Silent Way Method The Silent Way is an approach to foreign-language learning designed to enable students to become independent, autonomous and responsible learners.
Caleb Gattegno ( 1911 – 1988) mathematics ( Visible & Tangible Math ) foreign languages ( The Silent Way ) reading ( Words in Color )
The main principles. Silence Teachers should concentrate on how students learn, not on how to teach Imitation and drill are not the primary means by which students learn Learning consists of trial and error, deliberate experimentation, suspending judgement , and revising conclusions In learning, learners draw on everything that they already know, especially their native language The teacher must not interfere with the learning process
The main principles. Mistakes “Mistakes are the gifts of the student to the class” Gattegno
The main principles. Nonverbal means of communication Gestures Emotions Actions
Advantages Problem solving It fosters: creativity, discovery, increase in intelligent potency and long term memory. Importance and the centrality of the Learner Learner is responsible
Disadvantages The Silent Way is a harsh method. The learner works in isolation With minimum help on the part of the teacher, the Silent Way method may put the learning itself at stake. The material ( the rods and the charts) fail to introduce all aspects of language. Other materials will have to be introduced.
Conclusion Extensive use of silence – a teaching method Active student participation Learner autonomy Independence from Teacher
