Reading

Task 1. Read the story about two friends and their camping trip and mark the sentences T(true), F(false), NS (Not Stated)

The trip of Lifetime

This summer holiday, my friend Irvin and I wanted to do something different. Instead of wasting our time staying at home watching TV and playing computer games as usual, we decided to go camping.

After getting permission from our parents, we began planning our trip. We made a list of all the food and supplies we would need and spent an entire afternoon searching for the best place to buy our camping equipment. In the end, our tent, our tent, stove and sleeping bags cost a lot of money, but it was worth it.

When the day finally arrived, my Uncle Bob was kind enough to drive us to the campsite after he got off his work. We knew it would take us a couple of hours to get there and Irvin and I grew more and more excited as we got closer to where we were going. It was dark by the time we arrived, but we didn’t care. We waved happily at Uncle Bob as he drove away. Then, after a bit of trouble and a lot of laughter, Irvin and I set up the tent and lit the cooking stove. As we sat having our first meal at the camp –tinned spaghetti –we both agreed it was the best food we had ever eaten. A short time later, warm and comfortable in our sleeping bags, we quickly fell asleep and dreamed about what our great adventure would bring.

Task 2. Read the story and choose the letter A, B, C, D.

Teenagers have their own TV channels, websites and magazines. So what about books?

Last year one publisher, Martins, started publishing a series called Waves. We spoke to the director Julia Smith. She explained, ‘Teenage fiction has been published since the 1970s but publishers have never been particularly successful in getting teenagers to buy and read books. Now they're realising that teenagers aren't just older children but they're not adults either and often aren't interested in adult fiction. For this series we're looking for new writers who write especially for teenagers.'

Athene Gorr's novel was published in the series last year and is selling well. Its title is The Purple Ring. She says, ‘The important thing is to persuade teenagers to pick up your book. I'm a new writer so, although I've got an unusual name which people might remember, nobody knows it yet! But my book has a fantastic cover which makes people want to look inside. Then they realise what a brilliant story it is!'

And what do teenagers themselves think about the series? We talked to Sophie Clarke, aged 15. She said, ‘I've read a few books in the Waves series. They say they're for 14-19 year olds and I agree with that. We're not interested in the same things as people in their twenties and thirties. I like them and I think they look really good too. The only thing is that because bookshops put them in the children's section, lots of teenagers won't find them so they may not do very well. And it's a shame there's no non-fiction in the series as I think lots of teenagers, especially boys, might buy that.’

A. persuade authors to write more teenage fiction.

В. explain why teenage fiction is easier to write than adult fiction.

15. Julia Smith says publishers now recognise that teenagers …

A. can enjoy the same kind of stories as adults.

В. are neither children nor adults.

С. grow up more quickly nowadays.

D. are more interested in reading nowadays.

16. Athene Gorr's novel ...

Task 3. Read the story and match the parts of the sentences according to the text. There is one extra ending.

First business

Robbie enjoyed art most at school. He liked maths and music too, but because it was hard for Robbie to spell words correctly or to understand texts, he didn’t enjoy being at school. In English, he had lots of problems.

So, when Robbie was 12, his parents decided he should leave school and study at home. There, he learnt about business and working on computers, and spent more time happily studying art, exercising and practicing on his violin. Robbie’s grandmother started teaching him to cook too. Like his mother and aunt he really enjoyed doing it.

One day, grandmother told him her secret way of making jam. Robbie made too much for the family to eat so he took it to other people in his street. He made more and more jam. It tasted so good that his parents’ friends started buying it from him. Robbie added all his costs together then decided on a price.

Then he made a business plan on the computer with help from his dad. Now people can buy his jam at a weekly market. It tastes wonderful and it’s healthy because Robbie uses grape juice, not sugar, to make it.

“I’m still only 14 but I’m already a businessman!” Robbie laughs. “Last week I earned 93 euro because 87 different people bought 58 kilos of my jam, and a supermarket wants to sell it too. My career is in jam-making, I think!”
