Statements Direct Speech (exact words) The exact meaning of what someone said Out-of-date reporting Jenny: I’m going to see Barry this afternoon. Jenny said she was going to see Barry that afternoon. (‘backshift’) Steve: I’ve got a headache, Malcolm. Steve said to/told Malcolm (that) he had a headache. Katia: I paid five pounds for the book. She said she paid/ had paid five pounds for the book. Terry: I was walking to the bus stop. He said he was walking/ had been walking to the bus stop. Terry: I’ll return the videos tomorrow, Ben. Terry told Ben that he would return the videos the next day. NB! Anne: Breakfast is ready. Teacher: Malta is an island. Anne has said(that) breakfast is ready.(the introductory verb is in the present) The teacher said Malta is/was an island.(general truth)

Granny: It’s too hot here. Don’t close the window. Granny asked him not to close the window as it was too hot there. NB! Use : order or tell + sb +(not)+to infinitive

Reported questions Direct questions Reported Questions Wh -questions Katia: Where does Chris live, John? Katia asked(John) where Chris lived . Katia wanted to know where Chris lived. (We don’t know who Katia asked). Yes/No questions Katia: Do you know where Chris live? Katia wanted to know if /whether we knew where Chris lived . Katia: Can you tell me when the next bus to Leeds is, please? She asked me when the next bus to Leeds was. NB! In reported questions ,the verb is in the affirmative. The question mark, please, well, oh,etc . are omitted.

I want to be served immediately. He agreed to send me the CD. He claimed to be working on a project. He demanded to be served immediately. verb +object +to infinitive beg remind advise invite Please, you have to do something. Don’t forget to lock the door. He begged me to do something. He reminded me to lock the door.

He explained that he had been too tired. She suggested that we (should) buy a drink.
