On October 31st British people celebrate Halloween. It is the most colorful and exiting holiday of the year. But in the past it was very scary. People called it “The night of the flying witches”. People lit fires to frighten them.
People decorate their houses with candles, skeletons and pumpkins.
The main symbol of Halloween is a pumpkin. But it is unusual pumpkin. Its name is “Jack -o'-Lantern”. People cut eyes, noses and mouth in the pumpkin. Then they put candles into it. So the pumpkin looks like a face. An Irish legend says that Jack-o'-Lanterns are named after the man called Jack.
Next symbols of Halloween are ghosts, monsters, witches, bats, black cats. Many years ago people believed that there were many ghosts and witches on the Earth. They met on October 31.
Today people don't believe in ghosts and witches but they like to tell stories about them on Halloween.
One of the traditions is dressing as witches or ghosts. People believed that ghosts came to the Earth. People wore masks when they left their houses after darkness. They thought that the ghosts would take them for spirits.
The main Halloween activity for children is “Trick or Treat”. Children dress in costumes and masks and go from door to door saying "trick or treat". The neighbours give children such treats as candy, fruit and pennies so that children do not play tricks on them.
Fortunetelling is an important part of Halloween. For example, a coin, a ring, and a thimble were baked into a cake. It was believed that the person who found the coin would become wealthy. The one who found the ring would marry soon. And the person who found the thimble would never get married.
Halloween is a favourite holiday of children in English speaking countries.
