   Dear pupils, teachers and guests! I am very glad to meet you and welcome to our party. Today we want to tell you how people in the world celebrate the best and the happiest holiday – Christmas. It’s the most important holiday in the year. And it is rich in customs and traditions.

   You know that we celebrate Christmas in winter. Winter is a magic season. It is cold but beautiful. When it comes, all the rivers and lakes are frozen. Snowflakes dance in the river. The ground, the trees and the houses are covered with deep snow. The sun rises later and sets earlier than in summer. But when it sends its rays to the earth, everything sparkles like diamonds. You’ll never see such a wonderful picture in any other season. Children sledge, ski and skate or go for a walk in the woods. They are fond of winter time. Let’s listen to the short fairy tale of winter months.

This is the season

When Children ski,

And Grandfather Frost

Brings the New Year Tree.

How quietly the snow

Is falling on the ground.

It’s falling on the country-side

And softly on the town.

   Perhaps no other holiday has developed a set of customs and symbols as rich as that of Christmas. It’s as if every culture had something lovely to contribute just like the Magi on that distant night in Bethlehem. Ancient Romans lit candles toward off evil, and to convince the sun to shine again.

   In Victorian times, candles came to represent good will. They were often placed in windows during Christmas season as a sing to passersby that shelter and warmth could be found within.

   Traditions to make Gingerbread houses and to hang small toys, candies and other goodies on the Christmas tree came from Germany. The custom of hanging stockings on the mantel to be filled with treats and presents is said to have originated in Norway. The story comes from the 1800’s when the father of three young maidens could not afford a dowry for his daughters to be married. From his castle, St. Nicholas heard of the poor misfortune of the maidens, and secretly threw three bags of gold coins down their chimney. It is said that the gold coins landed in the girls’ stockings, which were hanging in the fireplace to dry.

   The first written story about the legend of Santa Claus and his eight reindeer was “ A Visit from St. Nicholas “, penned by Clement Moore in 1823. the legend is taken from Russian stiries of Father Frost arriving in villages in a sled drawn by reindeer. And certainly everyone knew that he was coming thanks to the ringing bells.

   Santa Claus ( or St. Nicholas ) was born in 4 century before our era in Patata, Turkey and was reborn in hearts and minds of children in the 19th century. His current residence is in the North Pole and his main occupation is to deliver gifts to good boys and girls on Christmas eve. Every year he visits nearly 100 million houses spending 31 hours in the travel. The secret of his successful travel is that he always goes east to west using the time zones to his advantage. His favourite snacks are milk and cookies.

   He has only one dog – Saint Bernard called “ Cider “ and  he had eight reindeers until 1939 when the ninth reindeer Rudolf came in a story by Robert May.

  Pagan tribes from Northern Europe contributed their sacred evergreens. Ancient people revered evergreens for their ability to stay alive during the cold winter month. Often considered magical, they came to symbolize good luck and prosperity. It was often believed that if you hung holly over your bed, you would have good dreams. The Druids and Romans believed mistletoe had the magic power of peace, symbolizing  “ peace to all who enter “.

   Christ means “ the Saviour “, son of God. He came to the Earth to teach people to be kind, to love each other. The star, which appeared in the sky informed people of the “ Saviour’s “ birth. Christ was born when his parents Mary and Joseph were in the small town of Betlehem. And they had to stop in the cave where domestic animals lived. After Christ’s birth shepherds first saw the light of the star in the night sky and came to the cave and brought presents for the child Jesus. The world soon found that this child was special and we celebrate his birth with giving of gifts and good wishes. Here is a legend about Christmas.

   Thank you very much. Today is a special day. Some quests came to us and they want to tell you about celebration of Christmas in their countries. I want to introduce our quests.

   Christmas in GB is celebrated on the 25th of December every year. The word “ Christmas “ is derived from the words “ Christ’s Mass “ – the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. A Christmas tree stands in everybody’s living room at Christmas. There is a tradition to decorate it with light candels. Holly and mistletoe, evergreens, are wellknown Christmas decorations today. Giving presents and gifls is an old tradition too. Now children are told that Santa Claus or Father Christmas in a red suit, red hat and a long white beard climbes down the chimney, puts presents for them into stocking by the fireplace. Christmas in GB is a family holiday. Traditionally the British sing carols on Christmas day and have dinner with Christmas pudding.

   Christmas is the most beloved holiday among Ukrainians. Before Ukrainian Independence was proclaimed it wasn’t an official holiday. In spite of this it was celebrated in many families. Since 1992 we celebrate it openly. Now it is really a family holiday. On Christmas eve the family gathers for a holy supper of 12 dishes. The beginning of a holy supper is signalled by the first star. Christmas eve supper starts with a lighting of a candle. The holy supper on Christmas eve is a meal of 12 ritual meatless and milkless dishes. It must be stressed here that the dishes are not the same everywhere, every region keeps to its own traditions. I won’t go into detail but I want to say that the main dish is KUTYA made of honey, poppy seeds and wheat kernels boiled in pure water.

   On the 6th of January people clean their houses, cook much food and have KOLYADA. A characteristic feature of Christmas is carolling, which expresses respect for the master of the house and his children. In the evening a group of boys comes. They sing songs called KOLYADA. It is interesting to know that only boys must sing kolyadky, because girls bring unhappiness.

   In Russia winter is rich in festivals. It is a time to celebrate though it’s cold, frosty and snowy.

   Russian people celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January. The days from Christmas to the Epiphany are called Christmas – tide. During this time people used to have a carnival, make a snowman, ride a troika, play snowballs, wear fancy costumes, sing carols, climb a pole for a gift, tell fortunes.

   Some weeks before Christmas people are busy . they send greeting cards to all their relatives and friends. You can buy Christmas cards or you can make them. Many children make their cards at school. People buy Christmas tree and decorate it with toys, colored balls and little colored lights.

   On Christmas Eve people put their presents under the tree. People wish each other to be happy, healthy and wealthy. Before the 16th century the Christmas dinner was a boar’s head followed by roast peacock. Now turkey, mince pie and pudding have become the traditional American Christmas dinner.
