                    «HOMES AND HABITATS»
                                       Урок в 10 классе.

Цели урока.

Образовательная: расширять кругозор учащихся, закрепить, уточнить и систематизировать знания учащихся о стране изучаемого языка;

Развивающая: развивать аналитичность и критичность мышления учащихся, развивать способности к формированию выводов из прочитанного;

Воспитательная: воспитывать чувство коллективизма и сопереживания успехам и неудачам своих товарищей;

Практическая: развивать умения по всем видам речевой деятельности (аудирование, разговорная речь, чтение, письмо).

Оборудование: компьютер, интерактивная доска (IWB ),слайды с изображением достопримечательностей Лондона, CD проигрыватель, диск, карточки с вопросами.

1. Greetings. T: Good morning, dear friends. I’m very glad to see you! Sit down, please. I hope we’ll work as good as possible at our lesson, agreed?

2. Introduction. Today is the 25th of January and it is a holiday. By the way, do you know what holiday it is?

Ss: It is Tatyana's day. Students celebrate it. They meet with friends, go to the cinema, cafes, restaurants, go to some parties. It’s a very nice holiday and it’s very popular with the young people.

3. Warm up activity. T: Yes, it’s really so. In your nearest future you’ll also be students.

Let us imagine that you are studying at the universities, colleges or institutes and say what would you do if you were a student on that day.

Use the model: If I were a student, I’d....

Ss: If I were a student, I’d pass all my exams and get excellent marks.

..., I’d visit my friends and go to the disco.

T: Thank you, everyone. I see that when you are students you’ll spend your time very well visiting all sorts of clubs, cafes and what not. Of course you know that there are much more facilities in cities and towns rather than in the country.

4.Pre-Reading activity. Now we’ll read the text about Ali’s life in the city of London.

But before reading the text I’d like you to have a look at the photos and name all these sights.

Ss: Madam Tussaud’s Museum.

T: By the way, do you know how much it costs to make a wax figure? 40 thousand dollars.

Wax figures are not only sitting and standing. There are also figures which can move, they are computer-controlled.

Ss: The Tower of London.

T: What do you know about it?

Ss: It used to be a prison, a fortress, the king’s zoo. And now it is a museum.

Ss: Harrods Department Store, Camden Market, the Underground-it is the oldest underground in the world. If you compare stations in the London Tube and stations in Moscow you’ll see that there is a very big difference between them.

5. Reading. T: And now let’s read the text.

            My Home - Love It Or Hate It! By Ali Khazan.

A. I live in Blackheath in South London. London’s one of the largest and most exciting cities in the world, and there are advantages and disadvantages to living here.

B. The main advantage is that there’s a lot to do and see. In the centre of London there are tourist attractions like Madam Tussaud’s and Science Museum, and there are all kinds of parks and historic buildings. I suppose that we don’t always make the most of it. We only visit places like the Tower of London when one of our relatives comes to visit!

С. Secondly, London is a great place for entertainment. All the new films come here first, and if we want to go to a pop concert or a big sports events, there’s always something right on our doorstep And of course the shopping is great-there’s everything from department stores like Harrods to Camden Market.

D. Another advantage of living in London is that you can travel easily and quickly across the city on the underground. And we’ve got railway stations and airports to take you anywhere in the world.

E. Lastly, London is truly cosmopolitan. Kids at my school are from lots of different cultures, but that doesn’t stop us being friends. It’s good to mix with people from different backgrounds. It stops you from becoming narrowminded.

F. But there are some major problems if you live in London. Like most other capital cities, it is noisy, polluted and congested with traffic. The traffic problem is so bad that they have recently introduced a congestion charge for central London. Drivers now have to pay if they want to take their cars to the city centre. Hopefully that will improve the situation.

G. Secondly, things are very expensive here - apparently it’s more expensive to live here than to live in any American city. For example, if you go to the cinema in the centre of London it can cost you 12 dollars. And to go just one stop on the underground can cost you nearly 1 dollar.

H.  But the worst problem about living in London is that, in general, people are not very friendly. Nobody will talk to strangers or help people in the street if they are in trouble. They don’t trust each other, and I think that’s because they are scared of becoming victims of crime.

London has the highest crime rate in the country.

I. But in spite of these negative points, I still wouldn’t want to live outside of London. It’s my home - love it or hate it!'

6. Follow up activities(reading and writing). T: Let’s answer the questions on the text.

3. How much can it cost to go to the central London?

T: And we see that Ali loves his city in spite of all its problems. And what about you, what would you prefer: to live in a big city or in the country?

8. Writing and reading. T: Thank you. And finally, let us complete the summary of the essay, using the words:

For Ali principal advantage of living in London is the variety of things that there are to see and do. He thinks that the shops, the choice of leisure activity and the transport are good, and he likes the fact that London is a multicultural city. The disadvantages for him are the traffic, the expense, people’s unfriendliness and the crime, but he doesn’t want to leave his home.

9. Conclusion, ending the lesson.

T: Thank you for the lesson. You worked very hard today.
