W. Shakespeare.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Act 1.
Hyppolyta – the future Duchess
Theseus – the Duke of Athens
Egeus – elderly man
Hermia – Egeus’s daughter
Demetrius-
Lysander -
Scene 1.
Hyppolyta: It’s a beautiful day in Athens!
Theseus: It’s indeed a beautiful day, my dear. But not nearly as beautiful as you. “My darling, our wedding is in just four days, and yet it feels so far away!”
Hyppolyta (smiled): “ I assure you, dear Theseus,
These four days will pass quickly.
We’ll be man and wife or
Duke and Duchess, in no time”.
Theseus: “ I’m planning the biggest wedding celebration than Athens has ever seen.
Our guest will come from all over Greece to wish as well.
Hyppolyta: That sounds wonderful!
(the sound of trumpet echoing through the palace).
Scene2.
Hyppolyta – the future Duchess
Theseus – the Duke of Athens
Egeus – elderly man
Hermia – Egeus’s daughter
Demetrius
Lysander
Egeus: “Good day, Theseus, the Duke of Athens” (bowing slightly)
“And good day to you, fair Hyppolyta”.
Theseus: It’s good to see you, Egeus.
What brings you here today?
Egeus: Your Grace, I have come to ask for your help.
My daughter Hermia, here is refusing to listen to me”.
Step forward, Demetrius.
I gave Demetrius permission to marry Hermia, but she has fallen in love with
Lysander or rather, Lysander tricked her into falling in love with him.
He has given her sweets and gifts and turned my well-behaved daughter
into a very stubborn young woman.
Your Grace, according to Athenian law, a daughter must obey her father’s
wishes or be punished.
I beg you, make her come to her senses.
Theseus: What your father says is true, Hermia.
You must, by law, obey his wishes.
Why are you refusing to marry Demetrius?
He is, in my opinion, a good man.
Hermia: But Lysander is a good man too. (CRIED, HER eyes filling with tears)
Theseus: That may be true, but your father has chosen Demetrius to be your husband.
Hermia: Your Grace, what will happen to me if I refuse to do what my father wants?
Theseus: You will either be put to death or sent to live in a nunnery (женский монастырь).
The choice is yours, Hermia, either obey your father or suffer a terrible punishment.
You have until my wedding day to make decision.
Demetrius: Please, do as your father asks, Hermia.
You really have no choice.
Lysander: Leave her alone, Demetrius.
Can’t you see that Hermia and I are in love?
I am, my lord, as well deriv'd as he,
As well possess'd; my love is more than his;
My fortunes every way as fairly rank'd,
If not with vantage, as Demetrius';
And, which is more than all these boasts can be,
I am belov'd of beauteous Hermia.
Egeus: Love has nothing to do it.
Scornful Lysander, true, he hath my love;
And what is mine my love shall render him;
And she is mine; and all my right of her
I do estate unto Demetrius.
Lysander: But it does.
Hermia loves me, not Demetrius.
Egeus, I am as wealthy and successful as Demetrius is,and, if I may,
a much better man.
Demetrius was once engaged to Hermia’s friend Helena, but left the poor girl.
Demetrius broke Helena’s heart; she still loves him dearly.
Theseus: I have heard this story, Lysander.
But it doesn’t change the fact that Egues wants his daughter to marry Demetrius.
Hermia, my advice to you is to do as your father request.
Come Hyppolyta, let’s go.
(the Duke, Hyppolyta, Demetrius had left the room)
Scene 3 (Hermia sat down on a blue velvet sofa and sighed)
Hermia: “ Oh, what a sad day” (плачет и Лисандер нежно вытирает ей слезы)
What are you going to do, Lysander?
There’s no way out of this horrible situation.
Lysander: I think I might have a solution. (садится рядом с ней)
I have a rich aunt who lives in a town outside of Athens
She never had any children and always thought of me as her son.
Perhaps we should run away and get married at her house
If we get married outside of Athens,
We won’t be breaking any laws.
Hermia: Oh, Lysander, that’s a wonderful idea!
(go round happiely)
Lysander: We’ll leave tomorrow night
Meet me in the wood outside Athens at eight o’clock.
In the meantime, I’ll make all arrangements for the journey.
Hermia: I can’t wait to marry you, Lysander.
Lysander: Neither can I. (берет ее за руку)
Author: Hermia went to the market to buy some fruit and met Helena.
Hermia told Helena about her and Lysander’s plan.
Helena was surprised and happy.
Helena came up with a clever idea: she decided to tell Demetrius about Hermia’s
decision.
It was the only way Helena could think of to win her former fiancé book.
Act 2.
Puck - observe
You speak all right;
I am that merry wander of the night.
I jest to Oberon and make him smile
When I a fat and bean-fed horse beguile,
Neighing in likeness of a filly foal:
And sometime lurk I in a gossip's bowl,
In very likeness of a roasted crab,
And when she drinks, against her lips I bob
A merrier hour was never wasted there.
Scene 1.
Helena
Demetrius – in the wood
Demetrius: Stop following me, Helena.
I’ve told you a thousand times,
I don’t love you and I never will.
Helena: But Demetrius, we’ve supposed to be together, it is our destiny!
Demetrius: My destiny is to be with Hermia.
She is the woman I love.
Now, go away.
Helena: But Hermia is going to marry Lysander.
She doesn’t love you, Demetrius.
(Demetrius pushed the girl away angrily)
Demetrius: I pity you, Helena.
I can’t even stand to look at you.
I will not stay the questions. Let me go:
or, if you follow me, do not believe
But I shall do the mischief in the wood.
Helena: But I love you, Demetrius!
My life has no meaning without you.
Demetrius: Stop chasing me. I have to find Hermia and stop her from making a foolish mistake.
(he walked off angrily, the girl sat on the rock and wept bitterly).
I will not stay the questions; let me go:
Or, if you follow me, do not believe
But I shall do the mischief in the wood.
Helena: I won’t give up on you, Demetrius.
(cries, wipe tears)
Ah, in the temple, in the town, the field,
You do me mischief. Fie, Demetrius!
Your wrongs do set a scandal on my sex:
We cannot fight for love, as men may do;
We should be wood and were not made to woo.
Lies down and sleeps
Hermia: In wandering along the forest
Scene 2.
Puck: Do you like this performance?
Do you want a happy end?
Don’t worry. I’ll try to do my best.
Here is the fairy bunch of purple flowers.
I’ll pour the liquid onto the men’s eyelids
When they are sleeping.
Where are you , wanderers?
Though the forest have I gone,
But wanderers found I none
Or whose eyes I might approve
This flowers force in stirring love.
Night and silence – who is here?
So awake when I am gone.
What thou seest when thou dost wake,
Do it for thy true-love take,
In thy eye that shall appear
When thou wakest, it is thy dear:
Wake when some vile thing is near.
Yet but three? Come one more;
Two of both kinds make up four.
Here she comes, curst and sad:
Cupid is a knavish lad,
Thus to make poor females mad.
Re-enter Hermia
Hermia : Never so weary, never so in woe,
Bedabbled with the dew, and torn with briers,
I can no further crawl, no further go;
My legs can keep no pace with my desires.
Here will I rest me till the break of day.
Heavens shield Lysander, if they mean a fray!
Puck: On the ground
Sleep sound:
I'll apply
To your eye,
Gentle lover, remedy.
Squeezing the juice on LYSANDER's eyes
When thou wakest,
Thou takest
True delight
In the sight
Of thy former lady's eye:
And the country proverb known,
That every man should take his own,
In your waking shall be shown:
Jack shall have Jill;
Nought shall go ill;
The man shall have his mare again, and all shall be well.
Scene 3.
Theseus
Hyppolyta
Egeus in the wood
Lysander & Hermia
Demetrius & Helena
(are sleeping, lighting up with love)
Theseus: What a marvellous day for a hunt.
Hyppolyta: It is a lovely morning.
Egeus: I’m sure our hunt will be successful.
My goodness! That’s my daughter,Hermina.
She is with Demetrius,
Helena & Lysander.
What on earth are they all doing here?
Theseus: Perhaps we should wake them up and find out.
(the sound of horn, lovers are waking up happy)
Lysander: Good morning, Your Grace.
Theseus: Good morning, Lysander.
Tell me, why are you all sleeping here in the wood?
Lysander in confusion: I… I’m not quite sure
Hermia & I ran away together.
We were going to my aunt’s house to get married.
Somehow, we all ended up here.
Egeus: What? You were running away together?
You disobeyed me and wanted to rob Demetrius of his wife?
Your Grace, they should be punished for this!
Demetrius: It’s all right, Egues.
Helena told me about Lysander and Hermia’s plan to get married
And I followed them into the wood,
Hoping to change Hermia’s mind.
But then, the strangest thing happened:
I do not know how, but my feeling for Helena returned.
I no longer love Hermia,
I want to marry Helena now.
(Demetrius took Helena’s hand in his hand and the couple smiled at each other)
(Theseus and Hyppolyta exchanged confused glances)
Theseus: So none of you can remember exactly what happened last night.
(The four young people shook their heads)
Hermia: It all seems so far away.
Helena: Like a dream.
Theseus (turned to his friend, Egeus): Egeus, I’m going to allow Hermia to marry Lysander,
and Helena to marry Demetrius.
Egeus: Yes, Your Grace. Whatever you think is best.
Theseus: Let’s return to the palace.
Today, I will marry Hyppolyta,
And you young people will also get married.
All the Athens will celebrate tonight.
Puck
If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumber'd here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend:
if you pardon, we will mend:
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearned luck
Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue,
Music, dance.
The end.
