ZAVOLZHYE AT FIRST SIGHT

PRE-READING TASK

1. Look at the contour  map of Nizhny Novgorod oblast, find and mark the towns of Gorodets and Zavolzhye.
2. Answer the questions:

1. When did people begin to build the HPP?
2. What villages were located in that place?
3. How far does Zavolzhye stretch for?

3. Try to recollect some interesting facts about your town.

4. Read the proper names:

Nizhny Novgorod, The Hydro-electric Power Plant, Malakhovo, Salaguzovo, Schott.

5. Try to guess the meaning of the new words:

 Now we are going to one of the most significant places of our town.

Hello, our dear guests, I`m glad to see you.

In front of you is the remained part of the town gate. In 1947 the first builders of the Hydro-electric power plant came here. There were a lot of 1)_____ and forests…But nowadays that time belongs to history.

   So the town of the Zavolzhye is situated in Gorodets 2)______56 kilometres to the north-west of Nizhny Novgorod on the right 3)____ of the river Volga 4)______ the town of Gorodets. People can get to Zavolzhye by bus, by electric train, by car.  There is a railway station here.

   Our town stretches for 20 square kilometers, the 5)_______ of our town is about 40 000 people.

   The town was founded with the connection of the HPP 6)______ in 1948. There were some villages in this place: Pestovo, Sologuzovo, Palkino, Malakhovo. The dwellers of the town of Gorodets called that place “ za Volgoi” so the settlement was named Zavolzhye. In 1964 Zavolzhye became a town.

   Our town is considered to be a cultural, economical, political centre of our district.

   Zavolzhye is known as a town of engine constructors. Nowadays there are five major 7)______ enterprises here: Zavolzhye Engine Plant, a plant of crawler tractors, a furniture factory, a woodworking factory, a pharmaceutical packaging glass manufacturing plant, a division of Schott AG.   

There are 7 secondary comprehensive schools, an Orthodox gymnasium. After leaving school children can get their education in a Technical school. Our town has wonderful opportunities for youth leisure activities: 2 music schools, Town Hall, a modern cinema, Youth and children`s clubs, 3 libraries, a park for rest and entertainment. Zavolzhye is famous for its bright talented sportsmen, Olympic Champions who bring glory to our country.

   The central part of our town is known for its beautiful architecture. The buildings were created in the traditions of Russian classicism. It is the only completed 8)_______ town planning ensemble in Nizhny Novgorod region. It’s a favourite place for our young people.
