                                    ROSTOV STATE OPERA  AND BALLET

Rostov State Opera and Ballet will celebrate its 84th anniversary in the 2014-2015 season. Originally founded in 1931, the company is today based in an architecturally unique theatre complex in Rostov-on-Don, the largest cultural centre in southern Russia. This magnificent building with state-of-the-art technical equipment opened in 1999. There are three auditorias which can accommodate altogether an audience of about 1,500: the main theatre seating 1004; a chamber venue seating 250; and a cabaret-style hall and restaurant with 200 seats.
The opening of the new building coincided with the development of the company, with the creation of an opera symphony orchestra of over 100 musicians, the enlargement of the opera and ballet companies, the creation of a children’s chorus, and the opening of the dance department of the Rostov State Regional School of Arts.
Rostov State Opera and Ballet between them present nearly 300 performances a year drawn from a wide-ranging repertoire.
Regular guest conductors Maurizio Dones, Robert Lyall, and Marcello Mottadelli, join resident conductors Andrey Anikhanov, Alexander Goncharov, Alexei Shakuro and Michail Pabuzin.
Both opera and ballet companies have toured Europe with great success, performing in Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal and as the first opera company to be invited to the united Arab Emirates.
Rostov State Opera was awarded three Golden Masks for its production of Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Juno and Avos, an award for Russia’s outstanding theatrical event and received four nominations.

Artistic team consists of such famous people as : Elena Klinicheva (Pricipal Chorus Master),Viatcheslav Kushchev (Artistic and General Director),Maurizio Dones(Principal Guest Conductor),Eldar Aliev (Ballet Artistic Director),Stepan Zograbyan(Principal Designer).

Andrey Anikhanov became “Person of year 2014” in nomination “Theatrical figure of year”.Andrey Anikhanov was appointed Principal Conductor of Rostov State Opera and Ballet in September 2010.

One of the youngest professional ballets in Russia, the Rostov State Ballet was founded in the autumn of 2000. Ten years on the company is now of international acclaim.

At the time of this first production, the company numbered slightly more than 30, and consisted mainly of new graduates from the Russian ballet schools. Numbers have now swelled to over 60. In addition to Giselle, the repertoire  includes masterpieces of the classic repertoire such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty , Don Quixote , Romeo and Juliet  , La Fille mal gardée, Chopiniana  and many others.

There has been a tradition of light opera and operetta performance in Rostov-on-Don since the 19th century, and the Rostov State Opera and Ballet, originally founded in 1931, carries this on into the 21st century.

The repertoire now features major works by Mozart, Rossini, Verdi and Puccini which form roughly two-thirds of the productions, whilst the other third is made up of operas by Russian composers such as Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin.  Rostov State Opera also performs new work and has commissioned The Gypsy by Leonid Klinichev and Poprygunya by Konopel'ko.

In addition to Rostov State Opera's Principal Guest Conductor Mauruzio Dones (Italy), Principal Conductor Andrey Anikhanov and house conductors, Alexander Goncharov, and Alexei Shakuro, the company welcomes a number of distinguished guest conductors from both Russia and elsewhere, such as Robert Lyall (New Orleans), Marcello Mottadelli (Italy), Giovanni Froio (Italy), Andrey Galanov (Belarus), and Pavel Klinichev from the Bolshoi Theatre.

The Principal Designer for the Rostov State Opera is Stepan Zograbyan, and guest designers include Sergei Barkhin from Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, Viatcheslav Okunev from S. Petersburg (winner of numerous Golden Masks), and Zinoviy Margolin who won a Golden Mask award in 2005 for his designs for Rostov State Opera's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Yuri Kuper and Alexander Vassiliev.
