Part I – Reading.

A. Ratatouille

2. A big, solitude-loving, intimidating ogre falls in love with a beautiful princess. A talkative donkey accompanies him in his adventures.

3. A zebra, a lion, a giraffe and a hippopotamus escape the New York Zoo, accidentally travel over the ocean and meet the African wildlife.

C. Ice Age

4. A rat gifted with highly developed senses of taste and smell, inspired by his idol, the recently-deceased chef, dreams of becoming a cook himself.

5. A movie based on a French literary fairy tale about a cat who uses trickery and deceit to gain power, wealth, and the hand of a princess in marriage for his penniless and low-born master.

2. “Zoo Job”. Read the story.  Are the following sentences true or false?

1. The clown had no job before coming to the zoo.

2. The zoo keeper offered the clown a job of a street performer.

3. People stopped visiting the zoo after the gorilla has died.

4. The lion’s cage was next to the gorilla’s cage.

5. The clown’s salary was raised.

6. The lion wounded the clown badly.

7. The clown revealed himself when he was  crying for help.

One day an out of work clown is visiting the zoo and attempts to earn some money as a street performer. As soon as he starts to draw a crowd, a zoo keeper grabs him and drags him into his office. The zoo keeper explains to the clown that the zoo's most popular attraction, a gorilla, has died suddenly and the keeper fears that attendance at the zoo will fall off.

He offers the clown a job to dress up as the gorilla until they can get another one. The clown accepts.

So the next morning the clown puts on the gorilla suit and enters the cage before the crowd comes. He discovers that it's a great job. He can sleep all he wants, play and make fun of people and he draws bigger crowds than he ever did as a clown. However, eventually the crowds tire of him and he tires of just swinging on tires. He begins to notice that the people are paying more attention to the lion in the cage next to his. Not wanting to lose the attention of his audience, he climbs to the top of his cage, crawls across a partition, and dangles from the top to the lion's cage. Of course, this makes the lion furious, but the crowd loves it.

At the end of the day the zoo keeper comes and gives the clown a raise for being such a good attraction. Well, this goes on for some time, the clown keeps taunting the lion, the crowds grow larger, and his salary keeps going up. Then one terrible day when he is dangling over the furious lion he slips and falls. The clown is terrified.

The lion gathers itself and prepares to pounce. The clown is so scared that he begins to run round and round the cage with the lion close behind. Finally, the clown starts screaming and yelling, "Help me, help me!", but the lion is quick and pounces. The clown soon finds himself flat on his back looking up at the angry lion and the lion says, "Shut up you idiot! Do you want to get us both fired?"

3 . Limericks.  A limerick is a kind of a witty, humorous, or nonsense poem. It was popularized by Edward Lear in the 19th century. This is the example of a limerick:

There was an Old Man who supposed,
That the street door was partially closed;
But some very large rats,
Ate his coats and his hats,
While that futile old gentleman dozed.

We have three more limericks by Edward Lear. They are fine, but the lines are messed up. Try to restore the initial order of the lines. Keep in mind, that all limericks have the same strict rhyme scheme (A-A-B-B-A).

Which adorned that Old Man on a hill.

To her uncle's white pigs,

That amusing Young Lady of Bute.

That my nose is too long,

Who said, 'If you choose to suppose,

In his Grandmother's gown,

She played several jigs,

You are certainly wrong!'

Who seldom, if ever, stood still;

That remarkable Man with a nose.

There was a Young Lady of Bute,

There was an Old Man on a hill,

Who played on a silver-gilt flute;

There was an Old Man with a nose,

He ran up and down,

Less than two hours later they (get) a telephone call from a small town not far from London. “We (catch) three of the men”, they (say) happily, “and we (hope) to catch the fourth very soon.”

6. Parts of speech. Here’s a small poem about parts of speech. Try to find appropriate words to complete the lines.

Every name is called a noun,
As field and fountain, street and

In place of noun the
pronoun stands
As … and … can clap their hands
The
adjective describes a thing,
As magic wand and … ring
The
verb means action, something done -
To read, to write, to …, to …
How things are done, the
adverbs tell,
As quickly, slowly, badly, …
The
preposition shows relation,
As .. the street, or … the station
Conjunctions join, in many ways,
Sentences, words, …  phrase … phrase

The interjection show surprise,
As -  ..! How pretty! …! How wise!

Through poetry, we learn how each
of these make up the parts of speech.

9. Endless poem. You might remember a popular Russian children’s endless poem about a clergyman and his dog.  Here’s another example, not funny, but a philosophical one, written by a Jewish poet Yehuda Amichai.

Inside the brand-new museum

there's an old synagogue.

Inside the synagogue

is me.

Inside me

my heart.

Inside my heart

a museum.

Inside the museum

Try to compose an endless poem of your own.
