Тема: “Why is it necessary to study English?”

Цель: показать знания, умения и навыки учащихся седьмого класса в устной речи, а также при аудировании и письме по заданной теме;

совершенствовать и активизировать понимание и употребление грамматических структур в Present, Past, Future Simple, уметь применять конструкции с глаголом should, а также слышать и понимать структуры страдательного залога Passive voice.

    Воспитывать чувство гордости и радость познания нового в английском языке, учить стремиться знать больше и применять свои знания в жизни.

    Национально-региональный компонент: изучение бурятского языка в нашем регионе – это необходимость?

Задачи: повторить сопроводительные грамматические конструкции, предварительно опросить учащихся хотели ли бы они изучать другой иностранный язык, считают ли они изучение бурятского языка необходимостью в нашей школе, предложить учащимся найти оправдательные причины для тех, кто не может (или не хочет) хорошо выучить иностранный язык.

План:

1. Фонетическая разминка (приветствие, вопросы по теме).
2. Главная задача:

1. предложить учащимся чтение текста  
2. предложить учащимся самим задать вопросы по тексту
3. предложить гостям поучаствовать в обсуждении текста
4. объявить проблему учащимся: изучать или не изучать английский язык в восьмом классе

3. Заключение: учащиеся пишут письмо директору школы, (предварительно сделав вывод о необходимости/ ненужности изучения иностранного языка)
4. Вывод: учитель подводит итоги урока

1. The beginning of the lesson: Hello to everybody, I’m glad to see you at your places and our guests. From the very beginning I want to announce the topic of our today’s discussion: Is it necessary to study foreign languages and specially English? For discussion I have prepared lots of questions for you. Try to answer them:

1. Do you study any foreign languages?
2. What languages do you study?
3. What languages have you already known?
4. Is Russian a foreign language for you?
5. What languages can you speak?
6. What languages can you speak well?
7. What language(s) do you like to study?
8. What language is difficult for you?
9. What is difficult for you in English?
10. What is difficult for you in French?
11. What is difficult for you in Russian?
12. Do we study Buryat language?
13. What other languages do you know?
14. Which one would you like to study? Why?

Somebody knocks at the door: Nadezhda Vladimirovna, you are asked by the head teacher Usinina L.V. to her. Go just now, please.

Teacher: “Dear guys, I have to leave you for some time. Please, be quiet and read the text which you see on the multi media black board. Be ready for discussing the text when I return.”

Text is written on the black board: “How many languages can a person know”.

    You know, of course, some people who speak more than one language. We must not think that only great people can learn many foreign languages.

    In modern times, when science and technical knowledge are progressing so fast, all kings of specialists need foreign languages in their work – teachers and doctors, politicians and actors, engineers and businessmen, and people of many other professions.

    If a person doesn’t know foreign languages, if he or she must wait for translations, he / she can’t hope to know all the news in his field. If he cant use a computer, read the text in English on the Internet and communicate with his partners by computer, he can hardly hope to be up to date in his work.

    Very soon he will be months and even years behind the times.

Possible questions on the text:

1. Do you know any people who speak more than one language?
2. Can only great people learn many foreign languages?
3. Are science and technical knowledge progressing fast in modern times?
4. Who need foreign languages?
5. What kind of specialists needs foreign languages?
6. Is it good or bad if a person doesn’t know a foreign language?
7. Do students also need foreign languages?
8. Do you like to study foreign languages?
9. What languages do you study?
10. Did you study your foreign language only at school?
11. Did you like to be busy with reading English literature?
12. What difficulties do you meet while studying English?

A teacher comes in some minutes

Teacher: Thank you for your waiting for me and I hope you have prepared questions on the text. Let’s begin talking on the topic: “How much do we need foreign languages?”

Students ask questions to the quests who are supposed to know English.

Teacher: “Well, now I want to give you the information which I have been given by our head teacher Usinina L.V. She told that next year we won’t study English. I suggest you to express you opinion whether you want to study it or not. Of course, I suppose that there are students in our group who dislike studying languages. To all of you I suggest to divide onto 2 groups”:

1. those who want to study – take the right side
2. those who don’t want to study – take the left side of the classroom.

Students take their seats according to their interest.

Teacher: more over we need a chairman who will count our “for” and  “against” opinion and write the groups decision.

We choose a chairman

Positive opinion:

1. About 20% of the worlds population speak English
2.  Doctors and scientists try to answer the same questions all over the world. They find it easy to exchange their ideas in English
3. English has become a means of communication within some countries where different groups of people speak different languages.
4. English is called the language of the sky and the sea. Every pilot and ships captain must speak English to communicate with each other.
5. Most vocabulary in the modern computing is in English. 80% of all information in the worlds computers is in English
6. English is the language of politicians. English along with French and German is spoken at their summit meetings. Most international journalists have to know English, too
7. 75% of all international business letters are written in English.
8. English is the language of rock and pop music. Most of world known singers sing their songs in English
9. US and British companies produce thousands of films, videos and TV programmes every year. They are shown all over the world with subtitles and dubbing

Possible negative opinion:

1. Some of us hate having home tasks.
2. Some o my classmates dislike doing homework.
3. We don’t have so much time for learning English.
4. Besides English we have other subjects to learn, often by heart.
5. It’s too difficult for me to understand grammar.
6. I don’t like learning words.

Teacher: “Together with a chairman we have counted the number of your opinion and I want to announce that there are more pupils who want to study English. I suggest writing a letter to our head teacher with our signature.”
