Russian Holidays
There are many national holidays in Russia, when people all over the country do not work and have special celebrations. The major holidays are: New Year’s Day, Women’s Day, May Day, Victory Day and Independence Day. The first holiday of the year is New Year’s Day. People see the new year in at midnight to the 31st of December. They greet the New Year with champagne and listening to the Kremlin chimes beating 12 o’clock. There are lost of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New Year tree glittering with coloured lights and decorations. Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a present. Many people consider New Year’s Day to be a family holiday. But the young prefer to have New Year parties of their own. A renewed holiday in our country is Christmas. It is celebrated on the 7th of January. It’s a religious holiday and a lot of people go to church services on that day. On the 8th of March we celebrate Women’s Day when men are supposed to do everything about the house and cook all the meals. The greatest national holiday in our country is Victory Day. On the 9th of May, 1945, the Soviet Army and its allies completely defeated the German fascists and the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War ended. This year we celebrated the 7 0th anniversary of this great event. A magnificent memorial on Poklonnaya Gora has been built to commemorate the Victory. Many veterans took part in the military parade and laid wreaths on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. All stood in silence for a minute. Radio and television broadcast popular war songs all day long. A lot of guest from different countries of the world came to Moscow to participate in the celebrations. Independence Day is a new holiday in our country. On the 12th of June, 1992, the first President of Russia was elected. We also celebrate Day of the Defender of Motherland on the 23d of February, Easter, Day of knowledge and lots of professional holidays.
Travelling
Modern life is impossible imagine without travelling. Thousands of people travel every day either on business or for pleasure. They can travel by air, by rail, by sea or by road.
Of course, travelling by air has more advantages. It is the fastest and the most convenient way, but it is the most expensive too. Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but it has its advantages. You can see much more interesting places of the country you are travelling through. Modern trains have very comfortable seats. There are also sleeping cars and dining cars which make even the longest journey enjoyable. Speed, comfort and safety are the main advantages of trains and planes. That is why many people prefer them to all other means. Travelling by sea is very popular. Large ships and small river boats can visit foreign countries and different places of interest within their own country. As for me, I prefer travelling by car. I think it’s very convenient. You needn’t reserve tour tickets. You needn’t carry heavy suitcases. You can stop wherever you wish, and spend at any place as much time as you like. Every year my friend and I go somewhere to the South for holidays. The Black Sea is one of the most wonderful places which attracts holiday-makers all over the world. There are many rest-homes, sanatoriums and tourist camps there. But it is also possible to rent a room or a furnished house for a couple of weeks there. Sometimes, we can place ourselves in a tent on the sea shore enjoying fresh air and the sun all day long. As a rule, I make new friends there. In the day-time we play volleyball, tennis, swim in the warm water of the sea and sunbathe. In the evening I like to sit on the beach watching the sea and enjoying the sunset. I’m fond of mountaineering. So I do a lot of climbing together with my friends. Time passes quickly and soon we have to make our way back. We return home sunburnt and full of impressions.

At the tour agency
Agent: Good morning. Distant Dreams Travel.
Billy: Oh, hello. Do you sell airline tickets for New Zealand?
Agent: Sure.
Billy: Right. I’d like four tickets from London Heathrow to New Zealand.
Agent: What’s your exact destination?
Billy: Auckland.
Agent: And when do you want to go?
Billy: I’d like to go on Friday the fifth of next month.
Agent: Return or one-way?
Billy: I’d like return tickets, please. We want to come back one month later.
Agent: OK. I’ll just check on the
computer. OK, do you want economy or business class?
Billy: Oh, business class is expensive. I prefer economy. How much is that?
Agent: Let me see. Four return tickets in economy, and your departure date is the fifth. OK. We’ve got Air New Zealand and Qantas for those dates. On Air New Zealand it’s six thousand New Zealand dollars, about two thousand pounds. Qantas is more expensive — about two thousand, three hundred pounds, but it’s a shorter flight. Which do you prefer?
Billy: The cheaper one. Air New
Zealand, I think. What time does the flight leave London?
Agent: At ten thirty in the morning.
Billy: Is it a direct flight?
Agent: No, there’s a short stop in Bangkok.
Billy: Fine. I’d like four tickets then, please.
