present simple present continuous is used is used for permanent situations : e.g. She works at school. for repeated actions in the present, especially with adverbs of frequency : e.g. Не often goes to the park on Sundays. for permanent truths or laws of nature : e.g. The Earth goes round the Sun. for timetables or programmes : e.g. The train leaves at 6 p.m. for temporary situations : e.g. Не is looking for a new flat these days. for actions happening at or around the time of speaking e.g. Ann is watching TV now. with always to express annoyance or criticism : e.g. He is always telling lies. for fixed arrangements in the near future : e.g. We are going to Moscow next week.

Adverbs of frequency Adverbs of frequency ( usually, often, always, rarely, seldom, never, etc ) are placed before main verbs but after auxiliary/ modal verbs ( be, have, can, will, must, shall, etc ) e.g. He often goes to the cinema. e.g. He is never late. e.g. Ann doesn’t usually go to bed.

State verbs State verbs express permanent state rather than action and do not have continuous forms. These are: verbs of senses (to feel, to hear, to see, to smell, to taste), verbs of feelings and emotions (to like, to dislike, to hate), verbs of opinions (to agree, to believe, to think), other verbs (to have, to need, to prefer, to want)

Some state verbs have continuous forms but there is a difference in meaning. Foor example: to see – видеть ( stat e ), встречаться ( action ) e.g. I see an elderly woman at the window. He is seeing his friends after work. to appear – казаться ( state ), выступать на сцене ( action ) e.g. She appears to be very happy with her exams results. My favourite actress is appearing in the new play tomorrow.

We are having dinner at 5 p.m. Nick is tasting the soup. He is fitting the new dress for Kate. He is being so rude today. She is appearing in a new TV show tomorrow.
