«English-speaking countries. The United States of America.»

1): Dear friends! Our dear guests!

2): We welcome you on our party!

(В.1): We want to invite you to make a tour round the United States of America.

(В.2): We glad to be your guides & show you the Beauty of the country, its Nature & Landscapes.

(В.1): We want you to get acquainted with the Culture of the United States: songs that are still heard over the endless valleys & vast prairies of the country.

(В.2): We want you to listen to verses that are whispered & recited in big cities and distant villages of the country.

(В.1): Let us go then, you and I,

When the evenings is spread out against the sky

Like a patient etherized upon a table;

Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,

The muttering retreats

Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels.

(В.2): And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:

Streets that follow like a tedious argument

Of insidious intent

To lead you to an overwhelming question…

Oh, do not ask, «What is it? »

Let us go and make our visit.

(В.1): The American Continent was discovered by Christopher Columbus, but many years had gone through since the Northern Part of the Continent was settled by the first Europeans of British origin.

(В.2):  When the first settlers landed the eastern coast of the Continent, the start point of our trip, they saw the magnificent wilderness of the country & narrow, crooked Indian paths & ways. They understood that they should build their own road, full of dangers & difficulties & courageously overcome it.

(В.1): Year by year the American continent became more and more settled. A new country appeared on the maps of the world. It name was «The United States of America».

(В.2): The history of the United States has a lot of pages. Some of them are brave, proud & courageous, others are shameful and disgraceful.

(В.1): But nobody can deny that the United States of America played an important role in the World History. Her Sons & Daughters gave their lives to glorify their Motherland; they did their best to make the country rich & prosperous, to put down the name «America» to the world history.

(В.2): O beautiful for pilgrim feet Whose stern unpassion’d stress

A thoroughfare for freedom beat a cross the wilderness.

America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw,

Confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law.

(В.1): American Poets in their verses and poems tried to depict the everyday life of common American people. They wrote about Love & Hate, the dreams& needs of people around them.

(В.2): American Poetry is presented by poets, who belong to different classes & races, generations & epochs. But all of them love their country, their folks. This love, hopes for future better life found reflection in the American poetry.

1 Dream Deferred by Langston Hughes.

Dream Deffered

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?

Or fester like a sore –

And then run?

Does it stink like rotten meat?

Or crust and sugar over –        гноем?

Like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags like a heavy load

Or does it just explode?

2 Round about Midnight by Bob Rfufman.

Round about Midnight

Jazz radio on a midnight kick,

Round about Midnight

Sitting on the bed,

With a jazz type chick

Round about Midnight,

Piano laughter, in my ears,

Round about Midnight.

Stirring up laughter, dying tears,

Round about Midnight.

Soft blue voices, muted grins,

Excited voices, Father’s sins,

Round about Midnight.

Come on baby, take off your clothes,

Round about Midnight.

3 Fire & Ice by Robert Frost.

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,

Some say in ice.

From what I’ve tasted of desire

I hold with those who favor fire.

But if it had to perish twice,

I think I know enough of hate

To say that for destruction ice

Is also great        Хорош,

And would suffice.

4 The Arrow & the Song by Henry Longfellow.

The Arrow and the Song

I shot an arrow into the air,

It fell to earth, I knew not where;                     Не знал я, где она упала;

For, so swiftly it flew, the sight

Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,

It fell to earth, I knew not where;

For who has sight so keen and strong,

That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak

I found the arrow, still unbroke;

And the song, from beginning to end,

I found again in the heart of a friend.

5 Words by Sylvia Plath.

Words                                                                 Слова

Axes                                                                    Топоры,

After whose stroke the wood rings,

And the echoes

Echoes traveling

Off from the center like horses.

The sap

Wells like tears, like

The water striving

To re-establish its mirror

Over the rock

That drops and turns,

A white skull,

Eaten by weedy greens.

Years later I          Годами позже я

Encounter them on the road –

Words dry and riderless,

The indefatigable hoof-taps.

From the bottom of the pool, fixed stars

Govern a life.

На сцене исполняется песня – романс «Let me Call your Sweetheart».

Robert Frost

Road not take

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Emily Dickinson

Bequest

You left me, sweet, two legacies,

A legacy of love

A heavenly Father would content,

Had he the offer of;

You left me boundaries of pain

Capacious as the sea,

Between eternity and time,

Your consciousness and me.

(В.1): American Literature is known all over the world not only by its Poetry but of course by its Prose.

(В.2): Who doesn’t know Jack London & his famous book «The Love of Life» or short stories by O’Henry?

(В.1): Who has never read Dreiser’s «Sister Carrie» or Edgar Alan Pau’s mysterious detective stories?

(В.2): But without any doubts the master of American Literature is used to be Mark Twain.

(В.1): Our grandparents & parents read his stories when they were children. We met his Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn in our childhood.

(В.2): Surely, our children will laugh at Twain’s heroes & read his immortal masterpieces.

(В.1): We want to perform you a scene from a book. Tom Sawyer is a small boy, an orphan & he lives with his aunt Polly. She is a very kind person & she loves him dearly.

(В.2): But she couldn’t manage Tom properly as he was a very lively boy. He was certainly not a modal boy.

(В.1): And now Ladies & Gentlemen! Attention every one! Meet Tom Sawyer and his auntie Polly!

Show «Tom Sawyer & Aunt Polly» by Mark Twain.

Background: Aunt Polly’s House. Aunt Polly entering the stage with a broom, a bucket and a duster in her hand. She dressed in a dress, an apron and a laced cap. She is looking for Tom.

Aunt Polly: - What is to be done with that boy? He’s my own dead sister’s boy, poor thing, and I haven’t got the heart to beat him. Where is that boy, I wonder? (She looks everywhere. Tom appears in the window& hides under the table. Aunt Polly comes to the window and cleans it with the duster.)

-Tom, where are you? (Aunt Polly looks out of the window.)

-Sid! Come over here! (She sits down on the chair by the table. Sid comes in. He dresses neatly in a shirt and Shorts, with a stylish hairdo.)

-What shall I do with Tom? Yesterday he ate that jam and almost poisoned the cat. I made these trousers a week ago and he has torn them to pieces already. (Shows the torn trousers with the large back hole.)

-Sid!

Sid: Yes, mom!

Aunt Polly: Come here. Have you seen Tom?

Sid: Yes, mom! (Tom shows him his first) No…, Auntie, I don’t think I have…

Aunt Polly: Oh, you don’t think you have!

Sid: You see, auntie, I’d rather…It’s like this…

Aunt Polly: Hush! Where have you seen him? Is he hiding somewhere like a rat in the corn? But I’ll get hold of him and I’ll give him a good licking. (Tom is making faces. Sid stars laughing.)And you too. (Mary comes in dancing & singing.) Mary, have  you seen Tom?

Mary: Here he …(Tom shows a first.) Here he was a moment ago. (A meowing is heard from the outside.)

Aunt Polly: Where is that boy?

Mary: Really, I don’t know.

Aunt Polly: Hang the boy; will I ever learn him anything? (A loud meowing is heard, then the sound of gravel striking the window.)

Tom: Meow! (Mary stars laughing.)

Aunt Polly: What are you laughing at? Damn that cat! Scat you, devil! (Aunt Polly looks under the table & sees Tom’s leg.) You Tom!

Tom: Well, what…

Aunt Polly: Don’t «What» me, naughty boy. I’m hoping to skin you alive and no mistake.

Tom: Auntie, what have I done?

Aunt Polly: Well, you have done enough these few days. Last evening I left two cakes in the cupboard, and now there is only one there. Can you explain that?

Tom: I guess it was so dark I didn’t see the other.

Aunt Polly: Mary, go and call Jim, tell him to fetch that long-handled brush and bucket of whitewash. Tom, you have got to whitewash to fence. And mind, do it well.

Tom: Oh, auntie. I can’t, I’ll do it tomorrow. Forgive me and let me go.

Aunt Polly: Tom! That’s enough. Toy must go and work. (Turns to the audience.) Everybody must go and work!

(All the characters leave the stage.)

(В.2):  Oh, Good Heavens! Tom is really a problem child! Poor Aunt Polly!

(В.1): We have travelled a lot! Now we have to return back to our start point to the east of the USA.

(В.2): Our travelling would be incomplete if we don’t visit New York – the biggest city in the world.

(В.1): The City has a lot of official & nick names: the second capital of the USA, the financial centre of the world.

(В.2): Some people call it «an apple city» or the city that never sleeps. Let us visit New York City.

(В.1):  That’s the end of our trip! We thank you for your attention and patience.

(В.2): We hope that you haven’t spent your time in vain & got a lot of useful information for yourself.

(В.1): We also hope that we’ll see you next time on our parties & meetings. Good bye? Friends!

(В.2): Good luck!
