Project Work - My Favourite Singer or Group.
Objectives:
- To listen to a recording of a class presentation and understand the main information.
- To use useful expressions when giving a class presentation.
- To prepare and give a class presentation about a singer or a group.

Listening | -First I'd like you to look at the photo in Exercise 1 on page 119 and try to guess what we are going to listen today. -You are right. Today we are going to listen about Ms Dynamite. Have you ever heard of this singer? What kind of music do you think she performs? - Let's listen to a student giving a presentation about this singer to the class. I give you some time to read through the table so you know what information to listen for. -Now I play the recording a second time. Your task is to complete the information about Ms Dynamite. (If necessary, I can play the recording a third time) | - About this singer. -(Open answers e.g. No, I haven't/ Yes, I have. I think she performs pop/rock etc.) -Students listen to the recording the first time for general comprehension. | |

-And now I want you to listen to the presentation again for extra information that is not in the table (beforehand write some questions on the board: e.g. Is she the eldest or youngest of her brothers and sisters? What was her mother's job? etc.) | |||
-Children, in Exercise 3 you should complete the Function File with the next expressions: another important thing, first, going to talk about, let's look at, now, so to finish. Listen to the sentences and check your answers. -Well done! Now we come up to the second part of our lesson. Today you are learning to give a class presentation similar to the one you have been listening some minutes before. | -Students' answers : 1 going to talk about, 2 first, 3 now, 4 let's look at, 5 another important thing, 6 so to finish. | ||
Speaking | -As you know, it is very important to read the Strategies before doing something. Who wants to read them? -Would you give some examples of things that you find fairly easy to express in English? -Would you give some examples of things that you find difficult to express in English? -I think it is clear that if you speak too quickly, some of your listeners won't understand you well and will start to interrupt you. -Sometimes speakers may want to correct the information they have just given in a talk, e.g. a wrong date, or other things. -Do you have any questions on these Strategies? If not, I give you some minutes to prepare for a presentation. - Now read the first step you should follow while preparing your presentation. -Some of the headings in your table can be different but the three main headings (Personal, Career, and Music) must be the same. After completing the table you may read the next step. -If you feel nervous, you may work in pairs practising your talk. -After finishing to practise your talks, read the third and the fourth steps. | -Students read the Strategies First, avoid talking about things that are difficult to express in English, (Open answers- e.g. facts such as someone's date of birth) (Open answers- e.g. describing the unique sound made by a band or singer ) Second, do not try to speak too quickly, Third, do not be afraid to correct yourself during talking. Students read the stages themselves : Stage 1 – choose a singer or a group and find out information about them. Draw a table like the one in the Listening Work Shop and complete it with your notes. Do not write out the whole presentation.
Stage 2 – practise giving your talk on your own, using expressions from the Function File in the Listening Workshop. Stage 3 – give your talk to the class. When listening to other presentations, write down one question to ask each other. | |
-Are there any volunteers to start? Do not forget to write down a question to ask each speaker afterward. -(Praising) Good! Well done! Excellent! Oh, that's great! lovely! fabulous! marvelous etc. -(Correcting) Now wait a minute – have a think about what you've just said; Right, try again; Now, is that right?; Well, that's not quite correct. Can anybody give … a hand?; Now say it again. You do know how to say it correctly; Is that really English? Now think carefully over what you've said; Now, what tense should … have used?; No – no, that's OK. – Fine! Now just say that a little louder etc. | Stage 4 – after your talk, answer two or three questions from the audience. In turn, students give their presentations to the class. (E.g. My favourite singer is … . He/she is from… . He/she was born in… . He/she began his/her career as a…. …has influenced his music. His/ her first experience was at the age of… . His/ her first single/album was released in…. . He/she took the 1st prize at… in…. He/she performs pop/ rap/ rock / garage/ techno music .I like his/her lyrics. etc ) When listening, the rest of the class write down their questions and then ask them to each other. | ||
Ending lesson | -I'd like to thank you. That was a lovely piece of work. -At home please recall the five most interesting facts from the presentations. Next time we will see how many of you chose the same facts. -Bye! See you on Monday. | -Good bye! See you. |
