1. Where the North Begins.
2. Hot and Dangerous.
3. Melting Ice.
4. The Roаring Waters.
5. Kingdom of Birds.
6. The Pick District.
A. For a continent 4,000 km across and 3,750 km from north to south, Australia has an amazing set of natural environments and wildlife. There are 530 native species of bird, 230 types of mammal, 300 species of lizard, 140 types of snake and two types of crocodile. Not all these animals are harmless. There are several species of poisonous spider and many poisonous snakes. Sharks, poisonous fish and salt water crocodiles are dangerous companions to swimmers.
B. Here you find summer "white nights", when the sun never sets and polar nights when it never rises. Many romantic ideas are connected with this place: a land of natural beauty, of hard winters, and of real Russian people — strong, honest, and hardworking. They say the north begins with Vologda. In fact it stretches to the Urals in the east, up to the White Sea, and across to Finland in the northwest of Russia. This area is rich in beautiful forests and lakes, wooden churches and monasteries, which grew into cultural centres. The population keeps old traditions, fairy tales, folk songs and customs which have already disappeared from much of Russia. For today's traveller who wants to get close to traditional Russian life and architecture and to understand how people lived in the past, this is the only place to go.
C. There were over 160 different species. With few natural enemies, most of these birds lost their ability to fly. Some were very tall and ate leaves off the trees, while others grazed like sheep.
Today only a few of New Zealand's birds survive. One is the kiwi, which is about the size of a duck. The kiwi is the national emblem. New Zealanders often call themselves "Kiwis". English spoken in New Zealand is often called Kiwi English.
Most of New Zealand's unique species and many of its native seals and fish have become extinct in the last five hundred years.
D. The two great cities of Manchester and Sheffield lie just 50 kilometers apart. Between them is one of the most unspoiled areas in England. It is a national park, which means that it is protected from industrial and urban development.
The area attracts many visitors from both cities. It also includes wild land, where there are more sheep than people. Indeed, sheep farming is an important part of the local economy.
Another interesting thing of this area is a large lake which gives water for the city of Sheffield. Some houses in this area are built from local stone, some from the red brick. It has many pretty villages and small towns.
E. America’s climate and geography are amazingly varied. There are high mountains and fields, deserts and cool and foggy coastline, tropical heat and Arctic cold in it.
The Niagara Falls is one of the most amazing American sights. It is situated between New York and Chicago. A mass of water falls over a cliff 27 metres high with a terrible noise. The roar of the falling water can be heard from a distance of 25 kilometres. The Niagara Falls is beautiful and changing all the time. It attracts a greater number of people than any other place on the continent.

(3 — Not stated). |
Recycling is becoming an extremely important issue nowadays. Our planet's resources are being used up at an incredible speed at the moment, and we are destroying the environment with the rubbish and pollution produced by not recycling. It is uneconomical to throw away rubbish, both for ourselves, and for society in general.
Recycling waste is important because it slows down the destruction of the environment. Everyone can help to recycle waste by taking their recyclable rubbish, like bottles, cans and old paper to recycling centres. That way, your recycled waste can be made into new products. You can also help by only buying recycled products, which will encourage the environmentally friendly companies, and force other companies to recycle more. When going to the shops, it's a good idea to take an old plastic bag with you, and reuse it. That way you won't need a new one.
The problem is that not enough people actually take the time or make the effort to recycle. What, then, can be done to encourage more people to start recycling? To begin with, more recycling bins could be placed in more places around the town. If this is done, people will find it easier and more convenient to recycle their rubbish. In this way, the situation will certainly improve. Secondly, we could start a reward scheme to pay people for recycling. If people were paid a penny for every bottle or can they recycled, they would be encouraged to recycle their bottles and cans.
People are not going to learn about recycling by themselves. We need to take action and encourage people to recycle now, before it is too late. If we all help to recycle, we can make our town a cleaner and nicer place to live in.
A5. Rubbish and pollution cause the destruction of the environment.
1) True 2) False 3) Not stated
А6. Every year a lot of new products are made from recyclable rubbish.
l) True 2) False 3) Not stated
A7. It is impossible to encourage people to recycle more.
l) True 2) False 3) Not stated
A8. Recycling can help people improve the places where they live.

Speaker 1
I used to think television was the most brilliant invention. But in the last couple of years I've changed my mind. For me now the best thing is the mobile phone. They used to be so heavy and not that attractive to carry around. But now they're tiny and light. I never go anywhere without mine.
. " •
Speaker 2
There are so many things that I think I couldn't live without. I can't imagine my life without radio and TV, but if there's one thing that's made a big difference to my life — it's the cash machine. I can relax about getting money and not rush around trying to get to the bank before it closes.
Speaker 3
I know there are all sorts of wonderful inventions. Like electricity — life would be impossible without it. But for me personally it's the car which I think has changed our lives a lot. I know you can reach any part of the world by plane but the car offers you such freedom!
Speaker 4
I think some inventions are such fun. All these computer games, I really love them. They help me relax when I'm feeling stressed. But there's no way I could live without my e-mail. When we all left school last year, I had everyone's e-mail address and that means we all keep in touch and meet with each other.
Speaker 5
There's one invention which has really saved my life and that's my electronic diary. 'My girlfriend bought me one because she got so fed up with me forgetting arrangements. I've no excuse now for forgetting anything, even her birthday is programmed into it! They aren't very expensive so I use mine all the time.
Dan: Hello! I'm Dan Walker Smith and today I'm joined by Kate. Now Kate and I are talking about pollution.
Kate: Yes, pollution is the term for harmful waste which has been put into the environment, and which can be damaging to plants and animals.
Dan: Now plastic pollution in the seas kills over a million sea birds and 100,000 mammals and turtles each year. Apparently 80% of all the plastic found in the ocean is actually litter that's been
thrown away on land.
Kate: And part of the problem is that most plastics aren't biodegradable. And some plastic bags could last in the environment for up to a thousand years.
Dan: I think we need to think very carefully about the way that we use plastics. If we think that 100 million tons of plastic products are made every year, 40% of those are packaging materials that are mainly used once and then discarded.
Kate: To lower the amount of plastic waste, scientists recommend the 'three Rs' for packaging. We can reduce the amount of packaging used on products; we can re-use packaging more than once, and we can recycle the materials used. Do you recycle, Dan?
Dan: I'm actually very lucky, because where I live in London has a great recycling programme. So essentially every week we've someone who comes round and collects all the paper and all the plastic and all the glass that I've used that entire week, which is fantastic.
Kate: Hopefully, if we all try and reduce waste, and use less packaging, and recycle more, then may be things will get better.
