Palace Square is the city’s main square and serves as an excellent example of how different architectural styles can be combined in a most elaborate way .

On the northern side is the grand Baroque-style Winter Palace. It was designed by the architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli between 1754 and 1762 . From the 1760s the Winter Palace was the main residence of the Russian Tsars.

Today the Winter Palace, together with four more buildings houses the collections of the Hermitage.

Palace Square was laid out in 1819-1829 by Carlo Rossi, an Italian architect of who designed a large number of streets and squares in St. Petersburg.

On the southern side is a yellow and white building that served as the former General Headquarters building. It was built by the architect Carlo Rossi in 1812-1829 in the classical style.

Triumphal arch is decorated by sculptors Stepan Pimenov and Vasily Demuth- Malinovsky and commemorating the Russian victory over Napoleonic France in the Patriotic War of 1812.

The arch is crowned with six horses bearing the winged figure of Glory.

The Classical building which forms the east side of the Palace Square is the former Guards Headquarters. It was built in 1837-1843 to the plans of architect Alexander Bryullov .

The Alexander Column was designed by the French-born architect Auguste de Montferrand , built between 1830 and 1834. The Alexander Column is a monument to Russia's victory over Napoleonic France.

The monument is 47.5 m tall and is topped with a statue of an angel holding a cross.

The column is a single piece of red granite, 25.45 m long and about 3.5 m in diameter. The granite monolith was obtained from Virolahti , Finland.

In 1832 it was transported by sea to Saint Petersburg, on a barge specially designed for this purpose.

The column, weighing 600 tonnes was erected by 3,000 men under the guidance of William Handyside in less than 2 hours. It is set so neatly that no attachment to the base is needed.

More than 2000 soldiers and 400 workmen rolled it onto a high platform. Then they lowered it onto its pedestal.

The column stands at 47,4 meter or almost 156 feet (including the base) and is topped with an angel whose face is said to resemble that of Emperor Alexander I.

The face of the angel is said to be modeled on the face of Emperor Alexander I. The statue of the angel was designed by the Russian sculptor Boris Orlovsky .

The pedestal of the Alexander Column is decorated with symbols of military glory . On the side of the pedestal facing the Winter Palace is a bas-relief depicting winged figures holding up a plaque bearing the words "To Alexander I from a grateful Russia".

The other three sides are decorated with bas-reliefs featuring allegorical figures of Wisdom and Abundance, Justice and Mercy, Peace and Victory, the last holding a shield bearing the dates 1812, 1813 and 1814.

A historic cast-iron railing around the column was removed during the Soviet period. The railing was restored in 2002.
