(on one of the balconies appear a Lady and her little son. The boy is crying. His mother points at the statue)
Woman (to her son): Why can’t you be like the Happy Prince? The Happy Prince never dreams of crying for anything.
(appear a student)
Student (pointing at the Prince): He is beautiful as a weathercock. Only not quite so useful. He’s very unpractical.
Backer: I’m glad there is someone in the world, who is quite happy!
Children: He looks just like an angel!
Teacher: How do you know? You have never seen one.
Children: But we have, in our dreams.
Teacher: I’ve always said that dreaming brings no good!
(all go away from the balconies, the light is slowly being turned off. exit the Swallow, she flies around the statue and finally lends at the feet of the Happy Prince)
Swallow: I have a golden bedroom! Oh! I can feel a water drop! (looks up). There is no a single cloud in the sky, the stars are quire clear and bright, and yet it is raining. But soon I’ll be of for Pyramids. Oh! Another water drop! What is the use of the statue if it cannot keep the rain off? This statue is absolutely useless! (looks up) Oh! Are these tears? He is crying! Who are you?
Prince: I am the Happy Prince.
Swallow: Why are you weeping then? You have made me thoroughly wet!
Prince: When I was alive and had a human heart, I didn’t know what tears were, for I lived in a Palace, where tears were not allowed to enter. Round the garden ran a very high wall, but I never cared to ask what lay beyond it. My courtiers called me Happy Prince, and happy, indeed I was, if pleasure be happiness. So I lived, and so I died. And now that I’m dead they have put me up here so high that I can see al the ugliness and the misery of the city.
(Happy Prince turns and points to the corner of the stage, where one of the balconies is located. The light above the balcony is turned on, a woman and her little son appear, the boy is crying. The woman has a bright kerchief in her hands)
Woman: We live in the poorest house in the city. I’m embroidering passionflowers on a satin gown for the loveliest of the Queen’s maids-of-honor to wear at he next Court-ball. My little boy is lying ill, he has a fever, he is asking for oranges. I have nothing to give him, but a river water, so he is crying.
(the light is turned off)
Prince: Swallow, Swallow, little Swallow, will you bring her the ruby out of my sword-hilt? My feet are fixed to that pedestal and I cannot move.
Swallow: I am waited for in Egypt. My friends are flying up and down the Nile, and talking to the large lotus-flowers. Soon they will go to sleep in the tomb of the great King. The King is there himself in his painted coffin.
Prince: Swallow, Swallow, little Swallow, can’t you stay with me for one night and be my messenger? The boy is so thirsty, and the mother is so sad.
Swallow: I don’t think I like boys….They through stones at me…Oh, you are so sad! It is very cold here. But I will stay with you for one night and be your messenger.
Prince: Thank you, little Swallow.
(the light is turned off, music is switched on, the swallow flies to the woman’s balcony and throws the ruby )
Woman: I’m so tired. What is it? It seems like a ruby. It can be a ruby. I can buy food now.
(swallow returns to the pedestal)
Swallow: It’s curious but I feel quite warm now, although it is so cold!
Prince: This is because you have done a good action.
Swallow: I’m so tired…I’m falling asleep.
(the light is turned off, night begins. appear the Professor of Ornithology)
Professor: What a remarkable phenomenon! A Swallow in winter! I’m going to write a letter to the local newspaper. Everyone will quote it, although I’m sure, they’ll understand nothing!
(the light is turned on. morning comes. the Swallow wakes up)
Swallow: Tonight I go to Egypt. Have you any messages for Egypt? I’m just starting.
Prince: Swallow, Swallow, little Swallow, cam you stay with me a bit longer?
Swallow: I’m waited for in Egypt. All night long we will watch the stars and at noon the yellow lions will come down to the water’s edge to drink. They have eyes like green beryls, and their roar is louder than the roar of the cataract.
Prince: Swallow, Swallow, little Swallow! Far away across the city I see a young man in a small room.
(on one of the balconies appears a young man. he is shivering)
Young Man: I’m trying to finish a play for the Director of the Theatre, but I’m to cold to write any more. There is no fire in the grate, and the hunger has made me weak.
Swallow: I will stay with you a bit longer. Shall I take him another ruby?
Prince: (sighing) I have no ruby now, my eyes are all that I have left. They are made of rare sapphires. Take one of them and bring to him.
Swallow: dear Prince, I cannot do that.
Prince: swallow, Swallow, little Swallow, do as I command you.
(the light is turned off, music is switched on, the swallow flies to the young man’s balcony and throws the sapphire )
Young Man: I’m beginning to be appreciated. This is from some great admirer! Now I ca finish my play.
(Swallow returns to Happy Prince)
Swallow: I’ve done what you asked. Now I’ve come to say good-bye to you. I’m going to Egypt at last!
Prince: Swallow, Swallow, little swallow, can’t you stay with me longer?
Swallow: It is winter. And the chill snow will soon be here. Dear Prince, I must leave you, but I will never forget you. Next spring I will bring you back two beautiful jewels to replace those, you have given away. The ruby shall be redder than a red rose, and the sapphire shall be as blue as the great sea.
Prince: In the square below stands a little girl, who sells matches.
(on one of the balconies appears a girl with matches. she is crying)
Girl: All my matches are spoiled, as they have fallen into the gutter. My father will beat me, if I don’t bring home some money. I’m so cold. I have no shoes, no stockings and it is so cold and wet.
Prince: Pluck out my other eye, and her father will not beat her.
Swallow: I will stay with you longer, but I can’t pluck out your eye. You would be completely blind then.
Prince: Swallow, Swallow, little Swallow, do as I command you.
(the light is turned off, music is switched on, the swallow flies to the girl and throws the sapphire. She takes it and starts laughing )
Girl: What a lovely bit of glass! My father is sure to like it!
(Swallow returns to Happy Prince)
Swallow: You are blind now. So I will stay with you always.
Prince: No, little Swallow. You must go away to Egypt!
Swallow: I will stay with you always. I can tell you about strange lands, I have seen. I’ve seen the Sphinx, who lives in the desert and knows everything; I’ve seen great green snakes in the palm trees; and merchants, who ride camels!
Prince: Dear little Swallow, you tell me of marvelous things, but the most marvelous thing is the suffering of men and women. There is no Mystery so great as Misery. Fly over the city and tell me what you see there.
(Swallow flies over the city; the light is off, the music is on. Then swallow returns to Happy Prince)
Swallow: I’ve seen hundreds of people, they are suffering. They have no food to eat and no clothes for these long winter nights. They cry and they re miserable.
Prince: I am covered with fine gold, you must take it off, leaf by leaf , and give it to the poor; people always think that gold can make them happy.
(Swallow takes gold, flies over the city and gives it to the poor. Happy Prince looks shabby. Swallow returns to the pedestal. Swallow is shivering)
Swallow: Good-bye, dear Prince. Will you let me kiss you?
Prince: I’m so glad that you are going to Egypt at last. You have stayed to long here.
Swallow: It’s not to Egypt that I’m going. I am going to the House of Death. Death is he brother of Sleep, is he not?
(swallow falls down near the feet of Happy Prince. Happy Prince cries and also falls down. music is on, light is off. after some time music is switched off, light is turned on. a crowd of citizens appears)
Student: Dear me! How shabby the Happy Prince looks!
Girl: Shabby, indeed!
Woman: Little better than a beggar!
Teacher: (to the children) As he is no longer beautiful, he is not longer useful.
Backer: I think, they will pull it down. Oh, there is a dead bird at his feet! But birds are not allowed to die here!
(they all surround the Prince and take him away. there left a leaden heart and the bird. Appear an Angel he stops near the heart and the bird)
Angel: My Lord told me to bring Him two most precious things in the city. I will take this leaden heart and this bird. For in His garden of Paradise this little bird will sing for evermore. And in the city of gold the Happy Prince will be praised forever.
(the light is off, the music begins silently at the entrance of Angel and is turned on loudly at the end)
