Christmas celebrations.

At Christmas, which is a home and family celebration in Britain, those who live away try to get back home. Christmas is the biggest holiday of the year.

As Christmas comes nearer, everyone is buying Christmas presents for friends and relatives. At Christmas people try to give the children everything they want. The children count the weeks, then the days, to Christmas.

On Christmas Eve families and friends gather for the festivities. Housewives are busy preparing food, and children are sent to bed. They are told that if they don’t go to sleep, Father Christmas will not bring them any presents. Then, when they are asleep, the parents come into their bedrooms and leave the presents near their beds, or under the Christmas – tree, or in a stocking hanging up somewhere in the room.

Two Americans in Spain.

Two Americans were travelling in Spain. One morning they entered a little restaurant for lunch. They didn’t know Spanish, however, and the waiter did not know English. So they tried to make him understand that they wanted some milk and sandwiches.

At first they pronounced the word “milk” many times. Then they spelled it. But the waiter still could not understand.

At last one of them took a piece of paper and began to draw a cow. He was just finishing his drawing, when the waiter looked at it and ran out of the restaurant.

“You see”, said the traveler who had drawn the cow, “what pencil can do for a man who has difficulties in a foreign country”.

After some time the waiter was back, but he brought no milk. He put down on the table in front of the two men two tickets for a bull – fight.

A Clever Trick.

         It was a cold and stormy night. A traveler   was riding a horse. It was raining cats and dogs and he was wet to the skin. He had been riding for a few hours before he could find an inn.

When he entered the inn he saw a lot of people there. They were sitting in front of the fire and there wasn't a seat left for him. A good idea struck him. He called the waiter and said to him in a loud voice: "Boy, take a plate  of  oysters  to my horse." Everybody was surprised. The waiter put some oysters on the plate and went out.

Naturally, the other people went out to see if the horse would eat the oysters. A few minutes later the waiter returned with the news that the horse had refused to eat the oysters. When the other people returned they saw that the traveler   was sitting comfortably in a chair. He was warming his feet beside the fire. And suddenly everybody realized why the traveler  had  ordered the waiter to take the oysters to the horse.

Patridge's Almanac

Many years ago there lived a man in London whose name was Patridge. A lot of people knew him because he wrote almanacs where he predicted the weather for each day of the year.

Once he decided to visit one of his friends who lived in the country.

He left London early in the morning and in a few hours he stopped at a small hotel to have dinner and rest a little. As he wanted to see his friend he didn't stay in the hotel for a long time.

When he was ready to go, the receptionist said to him, "Don't go out! It will rain." "No, I am sure it will not," said Patridge and left the hotel.

But very soon it began to rain. "How did the receptionist know it?" he thought. "I must return and ask him. It will help me to write my almanac."

The receptionist met him at the hotel. Patridge gave him some money and asked him, "How can you predict the weather so well?" "Oh, we  have Patridge's almanac, and when this Patridge says that the weather will be fine we always know that it will rain. Today it is July 20th, and the almanac says, "Fine weather, no rain."

A NEWSPAPER JOKE.

This happened more than fifty years ago, in a little American town called Springfield. The newspaper “The Springfield Voice” had a very difficult life. The newspaper hadn’t enough money and couldn’t pay its workers. But it had one difficulty that was even worse. When some interesting news appeared in “The Springfield Voice”, the rest of the newspapers in the town at once published the same news as their own. At last, “The Springfield Voice” decided to teach its enemies a lesson.

In the morning, April 1, “The Springfield Voice” published the news that a coffee king whose name was Lirpa Loof come from abroad and was going to visit Springfield. Of course, this was tremendous news in such a little town. That same afternoon all the other newspapers in the town wrote about Mr. Lirpa Loof. One newspaper published an interview with the rich businessman; another newspaper gave an interesting story of his life.

The next day, April 2, “The Springfield Voice” wrote: “Of course, we are proud that the other newspapers believed our story about the rich foreign businessman Lirpa Loof. But they must not forget what the date was yesterday. Read the first, then the second word – Lirpa Loof - from the end to the beginning, and you will see why they must not forget that date.”

 Buried Treasure

(an old tale)

An old peasant  had a large garden with many fruit trees. He was also the father of three strong, but lazy sons. They helped him very little in his work. Every morning before the sun was hot the peasant began to work in the garden. And every afternoon he had a rest in the garden under a tree. There came a time when the peasant could no longer  work among his trees, for  he was very, very old.

One day his three sons gathered in his room to hear the reading of the will. “I leave to my sons my garden and the treasure which lies buried there.

The three sons looked at one another. “Treasure!” they exclaimed. “Treasure buried in the garden! If we hire  others to dig there, they may steal our treasure from us. We must work in the garden until we find it.”

So the sons divided the garden into three parts and began to work harder than ever before. The dug from one end of the garden to the other end, but they could not find the treasure.

That year, however, the fruit trees brought so much fruit, that when the three sons sold  the fruit they got much money. It seemed to be a fortune. When they divided the money, one of them said, “Indeed, our digging has brought us a treasure. Our father was very wise.” And so each year their digging brought them a treasure.

2. Once a rich Englishwoman called Mrs. Johnson decided to have a birthday party. She invited a lot of guests and a singer. The singer was poor, but he had a very good voice.
3. The singer got to Mrs. Johnson's house at exactly six o'clock as he had been asked to do, but when he went in, he saw through a door that the dining-room was already full of guests, who were sitting round a big table in the middle of the room. The guests were eating, joking, laughing, and talking loudly. Mrs. Johnson came out to him, and he thought she was going to ask him to join them, when she said, "We're glad, sir, that you have come. You will be singing after dinner, I'll call you as soon as we're ready to listen to you. Now will you go into the kitchen and have dinner, too, please?"
4. The singer was very angry, but said nothing. At first he wanted to leave Mrs. Johnson's house at once, but then he changed his mind and decided to stay and teach her and her rich guests a good lesson. When the singer went into the kitchen, the servants were having dinner, too. He joined them. After dinner, the singer thanked everybody and said, "Well, now I'm going to sing to you, my good friends." And he sang them some beautiful songs.
5. Soon Mrs. Johnson called the singer. "Well, sir, we're ready." "Ready?" asked the singer. "What are you ready for?" "To listen to you," said Mrs. Johnson in an angry voice. "Listen to me? But I have already sung, and I'm afraid I shan't be able to sing any more tonight." "Where did you sing?" "In the kitchen. I always sing for those I have dinner with."
