The Kizhi architectural ensemble is situated in a small island in the north-eastern part of lake Onezhskoye. In the 12 th century Zaonezhiye became a part of the Novgorodian feudal republic. A unique Northern Russian culture was appearing.

AS ALL IMPORTANT EVENTS OF RUSSIAN ORTHODOX FARMERS TOOK PLACE IN A CHURCH OR NEAR IT, THE FIRST KIZHI CHURCHES APPEARED ON THE ISLAND IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 16 TH CENTURY. FROM LATE 16 TH TO EARLY 18 TH THE POGOST EXPERIENCED INVASIONS OF THE SWEDESH, POLISH, LITHUANIANS.

The Transfiguration Church Early 18 th century was marked with Peter`s changes. Villages were renovated, churches were rebuilt. Probably, the first of today`s Kizhi churches was the Transfiguration Church. It was opened in1714. Unfortunately, the history did not keep the names of masters carpenters. It is known that the brigade o Zaonezhiye carpenters built the church, and the whole community helped them.

The Transfiguration Church The church was built not according to designs and drawings, but according to traditions passed by the word of mouth from generation to generation. A traditional multi-top round church having “twenty walls” was built, with twenty-two domes. The total height of the church is 37 meters. However, being near the church, a man does not feel the overbearing height and power of the log giant.

The Transfiguration Church The magnificent upper part of the church and plentitude are not just a decoration. The seemingly decorative elements of the upper part are united into the consistent system of protection of the main element – framework – from rain and moisture. Rain drops, which fell onto the upper dome, run to the barrel and then to the slopes of the roof going far beyond the logged framework. Probably, that is why the church is still there almost 300 years.

The Protection Church In 1764, the final look of the protection Church was formed. In 1945 it stopped working and in 1995 it started to work again. The winter Saint Virgin`s Protection Church was built next to the summer Transfiguration Church. It is completely different from its magnificent neighbor. The building has a form of a long rectangle and consists of several four-edge frameworks. And an eight-edge framework is mounted on them. The roof is crowned with 10 domes. Due to it, the top of the Transfiguration Church seemed flying in the air, and silhouettes of two churches united in the single architectural accord.

The Church of Lazarus` Resurrection The church has the wonderful harmony of proportions. It is one of the oldest wooden buildings of Russia. Three adjacent cages different in height and volume are covered with two-slope roof. In the second half of the 19 th century, the Church of Lazaru`s Resurrection became the object of pilgrimage. In 1959, it was transported to the Kizhi island and restored.

The Archangel Michael's Chapel The Archangel Michael`s Chapel from the Lelikozero village is one of the architectural pearls of the Russian North. The initial purpose of the chapel was praying for the dead, but it was extended in the course of time. In the days of the Saints people from the whole community came to the village. The chapel was a kind of the village center. People made it as beautiful as they could.

The Three Saints` Chapel The Chapel was devoted to the Great Basil, John the Zlatoust and the Divine Grigory. The twenty-three meter high bell tower dominated the area. The Three Saints` Chapel was transferred to the Kizhi island in 1962. It is situated in the northern end of the island and gains the severe charm of a northern temple.

Oshevnev`s house A farmer`s house was a kind of estate and included everything necessary for life – dwelling, workplace, stores, premises for cattle. Oshevnev`s house is one of the most widespread in Zaonezhiye complex houses called “coshels”. The decorated part of the house facing the lake was purposed for dwelling.

Oshevnev`s house The weatern elevation is particularly attractive. The slope of the roof is covered with a small mezzanine and a balcony, due to which the house seems higher and more slender. The door leads to lower inner porch. Out of it, one can go to the store. Here the Oshevnevs lived for a long winter. Double-decked floors, low ceilings pressing the heat onto people, small windows, almost covered with snow in winter.

Oshevnev`s house With the first warm days, the family moved to the summer house on the second floor. High ceilings and conveniently placed windows give the sensation of space and light, which is extremely contrasting with the winter house.
