They do their best to keep their history and traditions and are always glad to share it with tourists. Bands clubs are part of the social and culture history of the Maltese Islands. Прочитайте тексты 1-5 и установите их соответствие рубрикам A - F , к которым они могут быть отнесены. Используйте каждую букву только один раз. В задании имеется одна лишняя рубрика.
A. Halloween D. Valentine's Day
B. Thanksgiving E. New Year
C. Christmas F. Easter
1. Since before this holiday existed, people used evergreen plants to decorate their homes in winter. But it wasn't until the 16th century in Germany that Christians started using trees as decorations. In 19th century Prince Albert, the German husband of Britain's Queen Victoria, first brought a Christmas tree to Windsor Castle. And the idea stuck!
2. Several thousands years ago, the Celts considered October 31st the end of the year. They had a big party that day. It was a celebration of the autumn harvest and the Celtic new year, when they believed spirits could come back and visit living relatives. Celts put out food and drink for the dead and left their windows, doors, and gates unlocked to give the spirits free passage into their homes.
3. Every culture has its own way to celebrate this holiday. In the US, many people throw parties, and crowds gather in New York's Time Square. In the American South, people eat black-eyed peas for good luck in the new year. In Spain and some countries of South America, people get good luck by eating 12 grapes at midnight.
4. The first celebration in Plymouth Colony in 1621 was actually a harvest celebration! The colonists invited the Native Americans to join their traditional English celebration. It was only in the nineteenth century that this event became an American holiday. Today's traditions include foods like turkey, cranberries, and mashed potatoes. But probably the most important traditions are getting together with family and giving thanks.
5. Some say the tradition began as an ancient Roman festival called Lupercallia, which took place in February and included rituals to pair up young men and women. As the Roman Empire converted to Christianity, some old festivals were converted to Christian holidays. Around the year 270, a priest named Valentine secretly married couples against the emperor's order, and, as a result, he was jailed and died on February 14th. In honour of this priest, the Pope named February the 14th after him. In Medieval Europe, people began sending notes on that day.

This is perhaps the best documentary mystery and extremely diffucult to explain. In 1050 BC, there lived a princess in Egypt, the Princess of Amen-Ra. After her death, she was put in a beautiful coffin and buried at Luxor, on the banks of the Nile.
But the Princess decided to live on spreading misfortune for anyone who came to know her down the ages.
In the 1880s, more than two thousand and eight hundred years after the death of the Princess, four Englishmen visited Luxor. They wanted to buy the mummy of the princess in a richly decorated coffin. One of them paid several thousand pounds and the coffin was taken to where they lived. Some hours later, he was seen walking out of the desert, never to return+
One of the other men was shot by an Egyptian servant. The third man, returning home, found his money gone. And the fourth man died of a bad illness.
The Princess in her coffin reached England after making some misfortunes on its way. In London, she was bought by a businessman. His three family members were injured in an accident and a fire damaged his house. He decided to give the coffin to the British Museum.
The Princess was put in the Egyptian Room but troubles continued. Museum's night watchmen often heard hysterical crying from the coffin. One watchman died on duty; cleaners refused to go near the Princess, too.
Finally the mummy was carried down to the underground room. Within a week, one of the helpers was seriously ill, and the administrator was found dead.
The American archeologist bought the mummy and arranged its removal to New York. In April 1912, the new owner escorted it aboard a new White Star liner to make its voyage to New York.
Because the reputation of the mummy was well known, the owner, William T. Stead, was scared. He secretly hid it in his new Renault automobile which was being transported to America on the ship. On the night of April 14, among scenes of unprecedented horror, the Princess of Amen - Ra accompanied 1,500 passengers to their deaths at the bottom of the Atlantic.
The name of the ship was Titanic.
A1 A long time ago the Princess of Amen - Ra decided to make trouble after death.

It was a bright Sunday morning in early June, the right time to be leaving home. My three sisters and a brother had already gone before me; two other brothers had yet to make up their minds. They were still sleeping that morning, but my mother had got up early and cooked me a heavy breakfast, had stood wordlessly while I ate it, and had helped me pack up my belongings. There had been no fuss, no appeals, no attempts at advice or permission. The stooping figure of my mother was the last I saw of my country home as I left it to discover the world. She stood old and bent, silently watching me go, one hand raised in farewell and blessing, not questioning why I went. Then I turned the corner, and closed that part of my life forever.
It was 1934. I was nineteen years old with a firm belief in good future. I was excited, knowing I had far to go; but not as yet, how far. As I left home that morning and walked away from the sleeping village, it never occurred to me that others had done this before me.
I was propelled, of course, by the traditional forces that had sent many generations along this road - by the cottage walls narrowing like the arms of an iron maiden, the local girls whispering, " Marry, and settle down."
And now I was on my journey. Naturally, I was going to London; and it seemed equally obvious that I should go on foot. By the end of the day when I was really alone at last - I felt less and less excited and confident. As I walked through the dust a growing unwillingness weighed me down. The hot empty road - there were few motor cars then - reflected Sunday's waste and indifference. Through the solitary morning and afternoon I found myself wishing to hear the sound of hurrying footsteps coming after me and family voices calling me back.

Catherine now ran the inn, and the work there had helped her cope with her husband's death.
Yet, in the nine months since the bridge tragedy, she still believed that some day the door would open and Ed would cheerfully call, " Where are my girls?' Sometimes she found herself listening for the sound of her husband's voice.
Now, in addition to all the shock and grief, her finances had become an urgent problem. Two years earlier, Catherine had closed the inn for six months, mortgaged it and completed a massive renovation and redecoration project.
One Friday afternoon Catherine was in the house, getting ready to go to the inn for the dinner hour. The insurance people were expected soon. But, when two gloomy looking executives arrived, it was not to begin the process of payment. " Mrs. Collins", the older of the two said, " I hope you will understand our position. We sympathize with you and understand the situation you are in. The problem is that we cannot authorize payment on your husband's policies without a death certificate and that is not going to be issued".
Catherine stared at him. " You mean it's not going to be issued until they have absolute proof of his death? But suppose his body was carried down the river clear into the Atlantic?"
Both men looked uneasy. " All the other bodies have been recovered. There isn't so much as wheel or engine part of a Cadillac in the riverbed below the accident site"
" Then you are saying+" Catherine was finding it hard to form words.
" We are saying that the executive report on the accident categorically states that Edwin Collins could not have perished in the bridge tragedy that night. The experts feel that even though he may have been in the vicinity of the bridge, no one believes Edwin Collins was a victim. We believe he was in none of the cars involved in the accident and took advantage of that favourable happening to make disappearance and go on to whatever life he had already planned to begin in South America or somewhere else."
A1 Catherine was so much depressed after her husband's death that she:
1 couldn't work
2 started hearing Ed's voice
3 believed he would return
4 talked to Ed through the door
A2 Catherine needed money because she:
1 had to run the inn
2 wanted to renovate the inn
3 wanted to forget her grief
4 had wasted her money
A3 The insurance people came to see Catherine to tell her that:
1 the company couldn't pay the money without a document
2 the insurance company refused to issue a death certificate
3 Edwin Collins' body had been found in the Atlantic
4 Edwin Collins' car had been found in the river.
A4 The executive report stated that Edwin :
1 was caught in one of the cars
2 was seen in the vicinity of the bridge
3 could have died in the accident
4 could not have been a victim
A5 The insurance people thought that Edwin Collins :
1 lived in South America
2 had organized his disappearance
3 did not care for his wife
4 had planned to return home.
