1. Use the past simple

1. Use the past continuous

1. I (write) a letter at 2 o’clock yesterday.
2. What you (do) at 8 o’clock last night?

4. It (rain) all day long on Thursday.
5. They (work) outside the spaceship when they noticed something strange.
6. At 4 p.m. yesterday a small satellite (move) towards our space station.
7. The poet (look) at the sky when I touched his shoulder.
8. We (repair) the spacesuit when he came in.
9. What (do) you when you heard the scream?
10. The girl (watch) the comedy when her elder brother came in.

1. Use the present perfect simple

1. Nick (be) in the country since Monday.
2. I (know) Bob for a long time.

7. I (not smoke) for nearly a month.

1. Use the present perfect continuous

1. We (wait) for you since 10 o’clock.
2. The child (sleep) from 8 o’clock up to this moment.
3. I (collect) stamps since I was a child.
4. She (learn) English for a long time.
5. John (live) in London since January.
6. I (wait) here for an hour.
7. They (walk) for 2 hours and we need a rest.
8. My sister (read) that book about ships.
9. I’m out of breath because I (run) to get here in time
10. He (not eat) at all well lately.

1. Use the past perfect

1. She (go) home by 4 p.m. yesterday.
2. The children (translate) only one text by the end of the lesson.
3. The boy (change) his T-shirt by that time.
4. When they came, the party (begin) already.
5. You (receive) the message before you left the office?
6. She (do) her homework before she went to school?
7. What Martin (buy) before he took the bus?
8. She (hear) never the song before the concert.
9. By 5 o’clock the rain (stop).

Grammar

The Past Simple Tense

• Ved/VII
• yesterday, the day before yesterday, a year (month, …) ago, last week (century, …), in 1945, long ago, once upon a time

The Past Continuous Tense

• was/were +   Ving
• The Past Continuous Tense употребляется:
• 1) для выражения действия, происходящего в какой-то момент в прошлом; этот момент выражен:
• а) обстоятельством времени:
• at … o’clock yesterday(last …), at that time
• all day yesterday,
• from … till … o’clock
• while …
• б) каким-либо другим действием, передаваемым глаголом в Past Simple:
• When night came the travelers were walking along a narrow path.

The Past Perfect Tense

• had + VIII/ Ved
• When he came she had already translated the text.
• He had phoned his friend before he left the office.
• We had done the homework by 4 o’clock yesterday.

The Present Perfect Simple

• have/has   +  VIII/ Ved
• today, this week(year, …), never, ever, just, already, not yet, recently
• for.., since …
• it’s the first(second, …) time…

The Present Perfect Continuous

• have been/has been + Ving
• from … o’clock (up to this moment)
• all day(my life), these … years, all this week(year,…)
• since…, for…
