Family Family is one of the oldest and most common human institutions. Since prehistoric times, the family has been an important organization in society. Most people grow up in a family and, as adults, establish a family of their own. The word family also refers to all persons ancestors and other relatives. Most families are based on kinship – that is, the members belong to the family through birth, marriage, or adoption. However, some groups that are not based on kinship think of themselves as a family because they share a home or feel ties of affection.

Functions of the Family The family fulfills many important functions in society, but the kinds of functions vary from one culture to another. In most societies, the family is the social unite into which children are born. The family also provides protection and training for their children. Human beings are born helpless and need care for several years after birth. Family life helps children learn the culture of society. The family provides economic support for its members. One function of the family in industrialized societies is to meet certain emotional and social needs of family members. Each member is expected to provide the others affection, emotional support, and a sense of belonging.

Wedding This is a traditional church wedding. The bride’s in white and carrying a bunch of flowers, and the groom is in black. He’s holding her hand. The bride and the groom are smiling because they are happy. They have the ceremony of marriage. The friends are throwing rice. Then they are going to drive to a hotel for the reception and to have cocktails and dinner, and to drink champagne. The bride and the groom are going to cut the cake. The guests are going to make speech and dance. later the wedding couple are going to leave the reception and drive to Kennedy Airport to fly to Mexico for their honeymoon.

Wedding superstitions The choice of date is important. May is traditionally unlucky for wedding. At most formal weddings brides get married in virginal white – many other colours are considered unlucky. A bride will also ensure that her wedding outfit includes “something old, something new; something borrowed, something blue ”

Wedding superstitions A bride will observe the taboos about wearing her dress before the ceremony. The groom mustn’t see her in it until she enters the church. The veil should be put on for the first time as she leaves for the church. It’s a lucky omen if the bride should see a chimney sweep on her way to church. After the ceremony the couple is showered with the confetti – to bless the marriage with fertility.
