Communicating part 1)
We are the great communicators!
- Greeting
Now… Good afternoon! Hi, everybody! How are you today? Are you OK? I hope so. Are you happy? I hope so. I’m so glad you could join me for another lesson.
In this lesson we will have a small talk, expand our vocabulary and you will be taking a look at a special thing.
Get the ball rolling . Just listen the music .
Slide 1 (part 1) – Could you predict what our lesson will be about ?( Our lesson will be about communication)
2. Warming up: Slide 2
You know how likely you are – you live in a fantastic world – we live with the technological revolution, digital revolution, information revolution – whatever you’ve called it – interconnectness between people and so on.. - knowledge is available to everybody. It’s very important. And what ways of communicating do you know?
You should write down as many different ways of communicating as you can. I’ll give you only 1 minute.
Using a phone Smoke signals
Writing and posting a letter Sign language
Sending an e-mail Morse code
Using the Internet Braille mime
Sending a fax TV and radio
3. So. And now you see that people can communicate with each other in many different ways. We can talk and write, and we can send messages with our hands and faces. So today we’ll speak about communicate in some unusual way – perhaps we’ll show you some ways of communicating because all our group think that English is fun and exciting place to be!
Imagine that these two girls Dasha and Jilia are neighbors. Unfortunately, they have a problem.
Could you answer my question: what the reason of complaining is? What is Dasha’s problem? What does Julia promise?
Julia: Hello! I’m Julia Brown! It’s Friday morning . (Knock-knock-knock!) Oh, who’s that?
Dasha: It’s me, Dasha Smith from next door. I don’t think we’ve met yet.
J: Oh, hi. I’m Julia. Pleased to meet you. Would you like to come in?
D: Oh, no thanks. I’m on my way to a lecture. I just wondered if I could have a quick word.
J: Sure, go ahead.
D: Well, it’s just that your loud music has been keeping my housemates and me awake every night since you moved in. There’s a lot of shouting going on too.
J: Oh…yes, I suppose we’ve been a bit noisy.
D: Yes, I understand, but we’re sitting exams in two weeks’ time and need a good night’s sleep.
J: Oh dear, I’m sorry. I’ll make sure that we keep it down.
D: Thanks so much, Julia, I appreciate that.
J: You’re welcome! Oh, by the way, we’re having a party this Saturday! You and your housemates are will invited!
D: Oh, well. OK then, it’s the weekend I suppose!
(Dasha has been having problems sleeping because of Phil’s loud music.
Julia promised to make less noise.)
- Well, It’s Saturday now. Imagine that we are two families and let’s get acquainted with a help of this ball! Make a circle, please. Tell some words about yourself and then give this ball to another person. Don’t let go the thread.
I will be the first one. I’m your Russian babushka!
I enjoy speaking English but I hate to give open lessons!... And now you, please!
Look! It’s a very good communicative Net! With the help of this Net we can show you a trace of our communication. It’s very long! What a sort of communication!
5.… But right now our girls are establishing contact and they want to know some news. Now they mime this news and you try to guess what it is about?
Try to role-play in pairs with you own words…
Use these phrases:
Breaking News:
You’re not going to believe this…
You’ll never guess…
Did you know that…
What! You’ve got to be kidding!
Showing surprise:
Really?! That’s unbelievable!
That can’t be right!
Are you sure? Where did you hear that?
Oh, come on! That’s ridiculous!
And now the original variant of this scene :
(Dasha, Kate )… That’s unbelievable!..
You see that mime is not an exact information.
- So… I want you to review the phrasal verbs in some unusual way. The group of our talented students will sing the song where you’ll hear they sining the gossips. Look at the first task and try to fill in the prepositions: over, across, down with, up with, into. Today we’ll try to communicate with the help of the song too. Let’s listen this unbelievable news and check up you answers!
Slide 1 (part 2):
-Why don’t you come over tonight? We’re having pizza!
-He put me up while I was in London.
-They come over at least once a week for a visit.
-Put on your jacket. It’s cold.
-If you keep on missing classes, you won’t pass your exams.
-The class came up with some great games for the party.
-I can’t put up with rude people.
6. You’ll hear two students talking about watching the news on TV.
-You’ll never guess what I saw!
-I can’t imagine!
-I don’t know how to explain! But we can show it to you!
The group of students (about 8 people) make a circle and two students are moving in the both directions around them.
-Do you know what does it mean?
_The Large Hadron Collider!
-Do you know how does it work?
-Not at all. But we can find this information in the Net.
7. Slide 2:
Do you know where does this miracle is?
How many scientists were built it?
Is it working now?
What is the aim of this physics experiment?
If you don’t know the answers – let’s read an article from the BBC site:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/universe/exploration/large_hadron_collider -
Let’s read about the most powerful physics experiment ever built, the Large Hadron collider that will re-create the conditions just after the Big Bang.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator, and "one of the great engineering milestones of mankind". It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) from 1998 to 2008, with the aim of allowing physicists to test the predictions of different theories of particle physics and high-energy physics, and particularly prove or disprove the existence of the theorized Higgs boson and of the large family of new particles predicted by supersymmetric theories. The LHC is expected to address some of the still unsolved questions of physics, advancing human understanding of Physical laws. It contains six detectors each designed for specific kinds of exploration.
The LHC was built in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and engineers from over 100 countries, as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories. It lies in a tunnel 27 kilometres in circumference, as deep as 175 metres beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland.
- Well, now we can watch the video film http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFiu1C4Wr88 about this astonishing machine and you should do a small test.
Sign the second list of paper and read the questions:
1.It’s the biggest mystery of all what happened in a Big Bang over _____ billion years ago.
a) 30 b) 13 c) billions
2. Particles are fared round in the ______________ directions.
a) both b) same c) not stated
3. Professor Stephen Hawking thinks that it ____________ dangerous for the Earth.
a) is b) is not c) not stated
4. Protons rich ___________________ of the speed of light.
a) not stated b) 99.9999991% c) 99.99991%
Slide37: Let’s check up
- Slide 4. Now I want you to say some words about this fascinating accelerator: What is your opinion towards to this astonishing machine?
State arguments ‘for’ and ‘against’.
-the LHC will help us answer many of the most questions concerning the structure of space and time;
-the project costs much money;
-the LHC may help us understand how the universe works and discover new facts about it;
-the LHC is one of the most expensive scientific instruments ever built;
-the experiments at the LHC may destroy the planet;
-the experiments at the LHC should continue because they are extremely interesting;
-the LHC may change the face of physics forever
- Slide 5: Home task
Comment on the following statement:
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest particle accelerator, is expected to advance humanity’s understanding of the deepest laws of nature. However, a lot of people are worried about its existence.
What can you say for and against this idea? Write an essay of 120-180 words.
11. Did you like this lesson? Who can say some words about it?
Have you leant something?
Summary:
Of course, we can communicate in many ways .
Radio, film, and television have had a huge influence on society in the last hundred years. And now we have the Internet, which is infinite. But what is this doing to us? We can give and get a lot of information very quickly. But there is so much information that it is difficult to know what is important and what isn’t. Modern media is changing our world every minute of every day. But there is a danger that you get drawn in too much information and too much knowledge.
