Lesson 1

Dictation

Winter is my favourite season. The sun is so bright. The streets, houses and trees are white and the snow shines in the sun.

We can ski, skate and sledge a lot. We usually play snowballs and make snowman in winter. We celebrate Xmas and New Year in December and January.

Lesson 2

Dictation

There are four seasons in a year. Each of them brings different weather and different dresses.

When it is hot people wear T-shirts and shorts, sport shoes and sandals. In cold weather people usually put on warm clothes: trousers and sweaters, overcoats and caps, high boots and mittens. When you think what to wear, choose the right dress. When you buy clothes, try them on; make sure that they are your size, that they suit you well.

Lesson 5

Dictation

A lot of birds and animals move from country to country and from continent to continent during the year. Some move when summer is over and it becomes colder and some when there is no food to eat. The birds fly to Africa and other warmer countries. Some birds can fly more than 7000 kilometers in 3 days. They come back in spring and never see winter.

The United States is a young country. People call it the “New World”. Americans like new ideas but they love old things too.

The people of the United States are in fact people from many different countries. These people brought to their new home their traditions. The Germans brought the Christmas tree and the Scots brought Hallowe’en. But only Americans celebrate Thanksgiving and Memorial Day.  

Lesson 8

Dictation

Some people think that the world will change a lot.

They say there won’t be many people in the cities. They will live in the country.

Pupils won’t go to school. They will have computers and computers will be their teachers.

At weekends people will go to the moon and have a good time there. They won’t read many books. But they will learn many things from nature.

English children have classes five days a week: on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. They never have classes on Saturday and Sunday. Schools in England have names, not numbers.

Children spend two years in infant schools. They play different games, run and jump, sing songs and dance. Their classes are informal, but they learn how to read, count and write a little.

You can find some of the best theatres, cinemas and museums in London. There are many beautiful old churches there too. Most of the streets are not very wide. Oxford Street is London’s main shopping centre. The largest park in London is Hyde Park. It is one of the most popular places of Londoners on hot summer days.

The Romans went to England and built a town on the River Thames. The name of the town was Londinium. The River Thames has always been part of the London’s history. There were fifty thousand people in Londinium. Soon after 400 the Romans left Britain.

At the beginning of the 11th century William the Conqueror went to England and became King of England. He built the White Tower because he was afraid of the English. Now it is one of the most important buildings of the Tower of London. By 1600 London became the biggest city and more than 200 000 people lived there.

London is the capital of England. The heart of London is the City. Many people work in the City but very few live there.

There are some interesting places in London. One of them is the Tower of London which now is the museum. One of the greatest English churches, St.Paul’s Cathedral is a beautiful building with many columns. The centre of London is Trafalgar Square. In the middle of the square there is a monument to Admiral Nelson and in front of it is the National Gallery, one of the best picture galleries in the world.

The political centre of London is Westminster. The British Prime Minister lives in that part of London. Parliament Square is a place where you can see a long grey building with towers which are the Houses of Parliament. Big Ben is the name of the clock and the bell of the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament.

Westminster Abbey is one of the most famous churches in London. Many kings and queens are buried there. The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace. In front of it is the Queen Victoria Memorial.

England became interested in the New World too. They set up a colony and called that part of the country “New England”.

The American flag is called “The Stars and Stripes”. There are fifty states in the USA, so there are fifty stars on the flag. The American flag has thirteen stripes: one stripe for each of the first thirteen colonies.

Americans are proud of their flag. They display it only during the day and fold it in a special way. Every state has its own flag, its own symbol and its own song, too.

One of the most famous symbols of the USA is the Statue of Liberty.

I Read the text:

Ice-Cream Sundae

The ice-cream sundae is an original American dish. Ice cream is not an original American food and chocolate syrup is not an original American food. But an American put the two together and started the ice-cream sundae.

An ice-cream sundae is ice cream with chocolate or other syrup over it. There are many kinds of toppings today. You put the toppings on top of the syrup. These can be nuts, fruit and whipped cream.

Ice-cream sundaes started in the 1890s. At that time people went to ice-cream parlors to eat ice cream. One day in Wisconsin a customer went to an ice-cream parlor. He wanted chocolate syrup on his vanilla ice cream. The owner of the parlor said this was a bad idea. But the customer insisted and finally got what he wanted. Soon many customers wanted syrup on their ice cream. Other ice-cream parlors started to have this new ice-cream dish. The sundae got its name from an ice-cream parlor in another town in Wisconsin. Here the owner of an ice-cream parlor only served the unusual ice-cream dish on Sundays. The ice-cream with the syrup was a special order and it was more expensive. It was a Sunday special. That’s how it got the name sundae.  Nobody knows why the spelling changed from Sunday to sundae.

Пояснительная записка

          Данное  методическое пособие предназначено для суворовцев 1 курса. В пособие включены диктанты и тестовые задания для диагностики усвоения программного материала.

          В пособии предлагаются варианты заданий различной степени сложности с ориентацией на разные уровни владения языком, а также на требования, представленные в государственном стандарте и учебной программе по английскому языку.

         Тестовые задания содержат как лексико-грамматические задания, так и задания по страноведению.

         Диктанты проводятся по каждой теме, по каждому уроку.

Рекомендуется:

- прочитать текст предварительно, дать осознать  все смысловые группы;

- продиктовать текст по предложениям или синтагмам;

- прочитать текст второй раз, чтобы суворовцы проверили, не пропущены ли какие-либо слова.

После проверки диктанта или теста следует проводить разбор допущенных ошибок.
