Angkor Wat, one of the many temples of the city of Angkor, is in Cambodia, South-East Asia. It is probably the largest religious building in the world. There are many wonderful sculptures on the walls that show dancers and musicians of the 12th century.

Some people say it was constructed by Surgavarman 2. Others say that the architect is unknown. When Jayavaram 2 was King, Angkor was the capital of Combodia  and Angkor Wat was the symbol of the King’s power. In 1431 , Angkor was destroyed  by the Thais. After the destruction, the city was lost for a few centuries. According to Buddhist legends, the city was built by the gods in ancient times. That’s why many people travelled from all parts of Asia to see it.

In 1860, Henri Mouhot, a French explorer, made Angkor Wat well-known to the world. The French people were amazed by this sight, so in 1908 they began a restoration project which hasn’t been completed yet.

What pets do Russians have?

Most people in Russia love animals. A lot of them have got one or more, even in big cities. .One survey shows that 45% of Russians have cats at home. People like cats – in Moscow there is the famous Cat Theatre and it is  always full.

Dogs are popular too – 36% of Russians have dogs and there are dogs show all over the country. The  shows have  prizes for different types of dogs. There is also a dog show programme on TV.

Wild bird were  once very common pets in Russia. Many people had wild birds from the forest in their homes. They freed the birds in March and April every year to celebrate spring. Now only 12% have  birds as pets – there are mostly budgies.

Goldfish are less popular now, too -  only 4% of Russians have them as pets. And 10% of animal lovers have other pets. Some of these are small, friendly animals such as rabbits. Others are dangerous or rare pets like the spider you can see here.

The teenager who changed world history

1. Franz Ferdinand was the direct cause of the First World War, which started the same year, and which resulted in the deaths of nine million soldiers. The war ended in 1918 with the Treaty of Versailles, which was very unfavourable to Germany. This, in turn, resulted in Germany going to war again in 1939, a war in which approximately 60,000,000 people around the world lost their lives.
2. For example, do you know who Gavrilo Princip was? Probably not. He was a Serb, born in Bosnia in 1894 and was one of nine children, six of whom died when they were very young. Gavrilo's health was also very bad and he suffered from tuberculosis. He studied in Belgrade where he spent most of his time with nationalists who wanted a union between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia. He died when he was just 24 years old.
3. The Second World War ended with the Treaty of Yalta in 1945 which led to the division of Eastern Europe, which eventually led to the conflict in Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Possibly no other person has had so much impact on world history over the last century than the sickly teenager, Gavrilo Princip.
4. History tells us about famous leaders, Kings and Queens, but what about the great changes which have been caused by one small act carried out by a relatively unknown person?
5. So why is he so important? Well, Gavrilo Princip is the boy who, at the age of 19, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914. Franz Ferdinand was going to be the next Austro-Hungarian emperor and the nationalists wanted their country to be independent from the empire. After shooting and killing the Archduke in his car, Gavrilo was captured by the police and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. But he died in prison of tuberculosis in 1918.

Teenage Crisis

Sister Wendy, TV Star!

Sister Wendy Beckett has been a nun for nearly 50 years, since she was 16. Most of the time she lives in solitary confinement in a caravan in the grounds of a Carmelite monastery in Norfolk, often not speaking to anyone for 22 hours a day. But every few months she leaves her caravan and travels round Europe, staying in international hotels and eating in famous restaurants. Why is she leading this double life? How does a nun who has devoted her life to solitude and prayer become a visitor to the Ritz?

Sister Wendy has a remarkable other life. She writes and presents an arts programme for BBC television called “Sister Wendy`s Grand Tour”. In it, she visits European art capitals and gives her personal opinions on some of the world`s most famous works of art. She begins each programme with these words: “For over 20 years I lived in solitude. Now I`m  seeing Europe for the first time. I`m visiting the world`s most famous art treasures.”

She speakes clearly and plainly, with none of the academic verbosity of art historians. TV viewers love her common-sense wisdom, and are fascinated to watch a kind, elderly, bespectacled, nun who is obviously delighted by all she sees. They are infected by her enthusiasm. Sister Wendy believes that although God wants her to have a life of prayer and solitary contemplation, he has also given her a mission to explain art in a simple manner to ordinary people. She says: “I think God has been very good to me. Really I am a disaster as a person. Solitude is right for me because I`m not good at being with other people. But of course I enjoy going on tour. I have a comfortable bed, a luxurious bath and good meals, but the joy is mild compared with the joy of solitude and silent prayer. I always rush back to my caravan. People find this hard to understand. I have never wanted anything else; I am a blisfully happy woman.”

Sister Wendy`s love of God and art is matched only by her love of good food and wine. She takes delight in poring over menus, choosing a good wine and wondering whether the steak is tender enough for her to eat because she has no back teeth. However, she is not delighted by her performance on television.

“I can`t bear to watch myself on television. I feel that I look so silly – a ridiculous blackclothed figure. Thank God we don`t have a television at the monastery. I suppose I am famous in a way, but as 95% of my time is spent alone in my caravan, it really doesen`t affect me. I`m unimportant.”

Sister Wendy earned £1, 200 for the first series. The succes of this resulted in an increase for the second series. The money is bieng used to provide new shower rooms for the Carmelite monastery.

After lunch the students work in teams on their projects from 14.00 up to 16.00. The day rounds off with disco or national dances. Students should be in their rooms by 11.00.

4. Most lectures are given by university teachers. Like students, they come from different countries and represent different universities but all the lectures are delivered in English.
