Unit 1: A Teenager’s World

Reading Skills: reading for gist

  1. ‘A helping hand’
  2. Influence on lifestyle
  3. Lack of rest
  4. The most popular activity
  5. Possible dangers
  6. Important inventions

                1. Recent surveys show that many teenagers consider computers the most important invention of the 20th century. The popularity of the television is failing while the popularity of computers is rising among teenagers throughout the world. Other popular inventions are such things as cell phones and personal digital assistants. They are far more important to teens than to parents.

2. Actually, the survey results reflect the changing lifestyle. Today’s teenagers use different services available on the computer and the Internet. They send messages instead of using the telephone. Watching a movie on television has been replaced with playing a DVD on the computer. Teens even do their homework and school projects on the computer.

3. Everyone talks about video games and how popular they are, and some young people spend a lot of time playing them. Almost a third of 13-year-olds in the UK play video games every day. Seven per cent of them spend 30 hours a week or more giving their thumbs a workout on video games. Young people who play for more than 30 hours a week are becoming video game addicts. They are addicted to playing computer games. They begin to lose their friends, and they also truant from school and start to get bad marks for their schoolwork.

4. Modern technologies have become an integral part of teenagers’ life. For example, the Internet. It is a great source of information, they use it for communicating with friends, homework and entertainment. Many teenagers know much about computers but their lack of experience can make them forget about the internet dangers and even become victims of on-line crime. Of course, the Internet is a great tool for helping teens with their homework. They can find information on any topic. There are even websites where they can get help with their homework.

5. But often the opportunity to get information from the net leads to cheating when pupils just copy someone’s papers. Another danger is lack of sleep. Teenagers often get as little as four hours of sleep because they play games or surf the net. As a result, they are not able to work well at school.

Reading Skills: reading for specific information

When I was younger I lived in Kenya because my dad was sent there with his work. During our first summer, my granny visited us from England, so we went on a holiday trip to the national safari park. As we were driving along we saw a car stuck in the mud, so my dad got out to help them. You’re not mean to do this because of all the animals wandering around. Suddenly, a baboon came over to our car and my granny opened the window and started to feed it with bananas! Within a few seconds there were baboons all around us – baboons jumping all over the top of the car! It was scary ‘cos they’ve got big teeth and were trying to get inside the car! Luckily, my dad turned round and saw the trouble we were in. He crept over to us and crawled into the driver’s seat – commando-style, on his belly! It was such a relief to drive on but after about a minute we saw a lion. My dad was so scared that he had to stop the car for a minute. All he could think of was how close he’d come being face to face with a lion!

I still love animals, but I think that a safari trip made me realize that animals may look cute, but sometimes they really can be dangerous.

3) Not stated

A6

Задание В1

Paul: Hi, I am Paul. Well, if something was out of fashion, would I wear it? Certainly, yes. I don’t really think about haw fashionable my clothes are. I am just not interested in my appearance that much, really. And I don’t understand men who think about their appearance. I find it absolutely crazy. I hate shopping, especially for clothes. So, most of my clothes are very old. I also hate when people judge others by their appearance because appearance is not everything. And it’s stupid to judge people by their clothes, too. I even think that we should wear casual clothes to work. It would be comfortable. And there is a good saying, “Appearance is deceptive”. And I think it’s true. I met a lot of people in expensive clothes who were very bad people indeed.

Kate: Hi, I am Kate. Yeah, people around me think that I am hooked on fashion. And I agree with them. I always follow fashion and buy latest fashion magazines and see what’s new and fashionable. Something out of fashion is certainly not for me. I love dressing up so much and I also like changing clothes several times a day. And of course, I want to look so that people think I look great and well-dressed. A person who wears something out of fashion looks stupid. Other people judge you by what you wear, don’t they? I love shopping for clothes, all those boutiques and expensive shops. I also enjoy window-shopping.

Jessica: Hi, I am Jessica. Up until a few years ago, I did follow fashion a bit; it was more like buying something now and then. Second hand clothes were all right, clothes from old collections were all right, too. It didn’t matter much what I and people wore. I didn’t want to pay a lot of money for clothes just because they were from new collection. I always wore jeans because they were much more comfortable, to be honest. But everything has changed since I started my work in a fashion magazine. They have a dress code in this company and my women colleagues are absolutely crazy about fashion. But I must say I really like it. All these dresses and skirts which I wear now! I believe that clothes that I wear can really affect what I feel about myself. People around look at me and I am happy with it now.

Simon: Hi, I am Simon. When I was much younger I was metrosexual and thought a lot about fashion and stuff. But now everything is different. To tell you the truth, fashion doesn’t matter to me any more. I can buy clothes either in second-hand shop or in an expensive shop – it doesn’t matter either now. I buy and wear what I really like. What is really important to me is comfort. I don’t want to be sitting and thinking these clothes don’t fit me. I can be very casual at home. If I know that I don’t need to go anywhere I can wear jeans and a T-shirt or even my favourite pajamas. I would never wear something like that to work, but, you know, I want to. I think that fashion today is awful. It is so fake and lifeless. I understood one thing – “all that glitters is not gold”. It’s stupid to be a fashion victim, I think. Expensive clothes don’t mean good personality.

Martina: Hi, I’m Martina. I am not hooked on clothes and fashion and I have never been a fashion victim! For example, it’s more important that you feel good in what you wear. I personally care more about style, not about fashion. I always look for something more individual and original. Fashion is something that changes very fast. To follow it you need a lot of time and money, of course. That’s useless, I think. What is really important is good taste. Good taste will never let you down! I believe it doesn’t matter how expensive your clothes are. I never “judge a book by its cover”, so to say. I can shop in the sales and so what? Clothes are really only a cover and what is really important is what’s inside.

Задание А1 – А4

Well, it’s a kind of weird that my mom tries to control me so much. I am fifteen and I don’t think it’s the age when my mom should tell me what to do. Moreover, she said it herself that the Internet is a good modern thing and I started and then what. My mom keeps saying all the time that what I do is bad and that I have to stop playing. She doesn’t understand that I can’t do that. My friends play even more and their parents do not say a word. If she didn’t tell me anything I would play seven days a week. Why should I stop? It’s not much, I think. I don’t see any problem in it. I usually play four or five hours a day. Of course, I make some breaks, like three or four times to get some food or drink or to text to my friend. The breaks are usually from 10 to 15 minutes. Four hours playing is OK, I think. My mom worries too much without any reason. She is even cruel. It’s kind of weird how hard she tries to make me go to the swimming pool. I don’t like it. I really enjoy on-line gaming. They are the best way of spending free time. And I don’t need a life outside the virtual world. I feel quite comfortable there, you know. And I don’t feel like going anywhere. Playing these games is very interesting. They train my reaction. I am in the group and I have lots of friends from all over the world, you know.
