Учитель приветствует участников и зрителей

On the 16th of November  all people  of  the  world  celebrate a Day of Tolerance. Do you know what tolerance is?  How do you personally  understand  this  word?

Учащиеся предлагают свои  ответы. (respecting the beliefs of others; the act of allowing something; a fair fnd objective attitude towards opinions that differ from one’s own; etc.)

Учитель:

-  Let’s look at the screen. There  you  will see the meaning of the word.

 (Tolerance means to understand, recognize and respect the beliefs  or  practices  of  other  people).

Now  you already know the meaning of the word tolerance and we are going to show you that people  of  the  world  are  different  but  it’s  up  to  us  make  this  world  friendly  and  peaceful.

- Sasha, could you help me?

- Yes, sure, with great pleasure.

- I’ve just heard a phrase “an international language”. What does it mean? Do you know any of them?

- International language is not the phenomenon of our age only. The  first  international language appeared  on  the  Earth  with  the  birth  of  civilization.  The  Biblical  myth  is  about  the  mixture  of  languages  during  the  construction  of  the  Babylon  Tower,  when  the  people  lost  their  universal  language  and  thus  could  not  communicate.  According  to  Chapter  11  of  the  Bible,  the  Tower  of  Babylon  was  a  tower  built  to  reach  the  Heavens  by  people.  God  became  angry  and  punished  people.  He  destroyed  the  tower  of  Babylon.  As  a  result,  this  story  is  sometimes  used  within  a  religious  context  to  explain  the  existence  of  many  different  languages.  Look  at  the  screen,  please!

So  I  must say  English is an international  language.  Nowadays it is spoken all over  the  world,  but  it  has  a  lot  of  borrowings  from  different  languages.

What  languages  are  you  talking  about?

For  example,  Latin.  English  has  a  lot  of  Latin  borrowings  such  as:  alma  mater, constitution,  alibi,  laboratory,  system,  climate,  tradition,  and  so  on.  Have  you  ever  heard  songs  in  Latin?

No,  I  haven’t.

Let’s  listen  to  “Gaudeamus”,  the  students’  song,  then.

You  are  intelligent  guy.  What  about  other  languages?  How  have  they  influenced  English?

The  Arabs  also  played  the  important  role.  English  borrowed  the  following  words:  sheikh,  sultan,  magazine,  algebra,  apricot,  alcohol. Are  you  fond  of  Arabian  dances?

Oh,  yes.  I  hope  every  girl  adores  Arabian  dances.

 Greek  helped  English.  It  has  a  great  number  of  Greek  borrowings,  for  example:  Crist,  character,  psychology,  alphabet.

Oh,  look!  Girls  are  dancing  Sirtaki.  I’m  crazy  about  Greek  dances.

And  now  let’s  remember  what  words  and  things  came  from  Chinese.  The  words  are  china,  silk,  tea,  typhoon  and  others

As  for  the  things  we  can  say  that  thanks  to  the  Chinese  culture  we  have  the  Theatre  of  Shadows.

Really?

Well,  for  example: kvass, shuba, samovar, troika, babushka, pirozhki, obrok,barshina, bliny  and so on.

It’s extremly interesting.

Oh,  my  dear,  I’m  very sorry, but  I  have  to  go.

What’s happened? Why???

I’ve  heard  the  balalaika sounds.  The Balalaika  is  my  soul,  because  I’m  a  Russian  boy  and  I  love  Russia  with  all  my  heart.
