The American flag is often called " The Stars and Stripes“. I t is also called "Old Glory” It represents the growth of the nation. It has 13 horizontal stripes,7 red and 6 white which stand for the original 13 states. In the top left hand corner there are 50 white stars on a blue background: one star for each state.

The Bald Eagle, National Symbol of the United States of America In 1782 it was chosen as the National Bird and then as a national emblem in 1787 . You can find it on the Great Seal of the United States. The Bald Eagle also appears on the Presidential Seal, most coins, paper money and many stamps.

The Great Seal of the United States of America The seal pictures an American bald eagle holding a ribbon in its beak; the ribbon has the motto of the USA, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," meaning " Out of many, one. " The eagle is clutching an olive branch (with 13 olives and 13 leaves) in one foot (symbolizing peace) and 13 arrows in the other (the 13 stands for the original 13 colonies and the arrows symbolize the acceptance of the need to go to war to protect the country). A shield is in front of the eagle; the shield has 13 red and white stripes (representing the original 13 colonies) with a blue bar above it (it symbolizes the uniting of the 13 colonies and represents congress). Above the eagle are rays, a circle of clouds, and 13 white stars.

There are many types of eagles all over the world , but the American Bald Eagle only lives on the North American Continent . That is one reason that the Golden Eagle was not chosen because it lives in Europe, also. When you first see this bird he is really impressive. It has a 2 ,5 - 3 foot body and can spread its sings 6-8 feet. When it spreads those wings and takes flight you catch your breath because they are so beautiful. To see their nests in trees you would look for a tree that is usually over 75 feet tall. The nests themselves are about five feet in diameter and just as deep. By the way, Benjamin Franklin thought that the wild turkey should be the national bird of the USA .

National Flower The rose "Americans have always loved the flowers with which God decorates our land. More often than any other flower, they hold the rose dear as the symbol of life and love and devotion (преданность) , of beauty and eternity (вечности) . For the love of man and woman, for the love of mankind and God, for the love of country, Americans who would speak the language of the heart do so with a rose... The American people have long held a special place in their hearts for roses... NOW, THEREFORE, I, RONALD REAGAN, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the rose as the National Floral Emblem of the United States of America (November 20, 1986) .

Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of American democracy. It stands on Liberty Island in New York. It is one of the first things people see when they arrive in New York by sea. This National Monument was a present from France to the USA. France gave the statue to America in 1884 as a symbol of friendship. Liberty carries the torch of freedom - in her right hand. In her left hand she is holding a tablet with the inscription "July 4, 1776" – American Independence Day .

Uncle Sam: An American National Symbol too Uncle Sam - The Personification of America Uncle Sam is a National Symbol. He is the personification of America itself. Wearing his finest red white and blue suit adorned in elements from the American flag - the stars and the stripes, Uncle Sam is an image of patriotism.

But, where did this character come from? Who was Uncle Sam? Samuel Wilson (1766-1854) was born in Arlington, Massachusetts, then known as Menotomy . He grew up in Mason, New Hampshire, and in 1778 he and his brother Ebeneezer moved to Troy NY, to start a business in the meat-packing industry. During the War of 1812, Sam Wilson obtained a contract to supply beef to the Army in its campaign further north. He shipped the meat in barrels branded with the initials "U.S." as they were government property. The soldiers and the teamsters( погонщики) took to joking that the initials referred to their "Uncle Sam," and over time, everything marked with "U.S." was linked with Uncle Sam. As much Army property these markings, Uncle Sam became synonymous with the United States itself. All supplies from the United States government were said to come from Uncle Sam.
