Task 4

 Прочитайте текст и выполните задания.

It is nine o'clock in the morning. It is extremely cold and grey, with no sign of sun. A man is climbing a steep bank alongside the Yukon River trail. Wherever he looks, there are pure, white layers of snow. He is new to this land and this is his first winter. It is seventy-five degrees below zero. He is wearing mittens, ear flaps, warm moccasins and thick socks. He is heading for the camp where other men are already waiting. His task, to look into the possibilities of getting logs from the country in spring, is accomplished. His lunch, biscuits soaked in bacon grease and fried bacon, is safely lying on his body to keep it from freezing. The man is not alone. There is a dog, a kind of big, native wolf-dog, with him. It knows this is not time for travelling.

It is ten o'clock. The man and the dog are approaching Henderson Creek. Only ten more miles to go to the fork of the creek where he can have his lunch. By six he can be in the camp. He is rubbing his nose and cheeks, they are frost-bitten but not numb. The man is walking slowly, carefully placing his feet on the snow. He is aware of treacherous springs hidden under the ice cover. To fall into one of these traps would mean danger and trouble. At twelve, he arrives at the fork. He is pleased. Now he can have his lunch, smoke a pipe and warm himself by the fire. The stinging in his feet is gone, it means they are numb and that frightens him a little. The dog is reluctant to leave the fire. It feels no close bond with the man but follows him.

There did not seem to be so many springs on the left fork of the Henderson, and for half an hour the man saw no signs of any. And then it happened. At a place where there were no signs, where the soft, unbroken snow seemed to advertise solidity beneath, the man broke through. It was not deep. He wet himself halfway to the knees before he struggled out to the firm crust.

He was angry, and cursed his luck aloud. He had hoped to get into camp with the boys at six o'clock, and this would delay him an hour, for he would have to build a fire and dry out his foot-gear. This was imperative at the low temperature - he knew that much; and he turned aside to the bank, which he climbed. On top, tangled in the underbrush about the trunks of several small spruce trees, was a high-water deposit of dry fire-wood - sticks and twigs, principally, but also larger portions of old branches and fine, dry grass. He threw several large pieces of wood down on top of the snow. This served for a foundation and prevented the young flame from drowning itself in the snow it would otherwise melt. He got a flame by touching a match to a small shred of birch-bark that he took from his pocket. This burned even more readily than paper. Placing it on the foundation, he fed the young flame with wisps of dry grass and with the tiniest dry twigs.

He worked slowly and carefully, keenly aware of his danger. Gradually, as the flame grew stronger, he increased the size of the twigs with which he fed it. He squatted in the snow, pulling the twigs out from their entanglement in the brush and feeding them directly to the flame. He knew there must be no failure. When it is seventy-five below zero, a man must not fail in his first attempt to build a fire - that is, if his feet are wet. If his feet are dry, and he fails, he can run along the trail for half a mile and restore his circulation. But the circulation of wet and freezing feet cannot be restored by running when it is seventy-five below. No matter how fast he runs, the wet feet will freeze harder.

The man knew all this. The old-timer on Sulphur Creek had told him about it the previous fall, and now he appreciated the advice.

I. The general results of the survey

School pressures survey

0 (I –The general results of the survey)

It has long been known that Hong Kong's education system is strongly exam oriented. The results of a survey this week show us some of the effects of this system on those most involved in it, i.e. students. Unsurprisingly it reveals that students are concerned over their academic results and being put under pressure through assessments.

1

A total of 537 full-time students aged 12 to 29 were surveyed this month by the Federation of Youth Groups for a study entitled 'How important are academic results to students?'

2

With a system that frequently tests students of all ages every week, and sets exams at least once a term, it was no surprise to find that about 60% of those surveyed rated academic results as important or very important, and said mark-based assessments had put them under pressure.

3

The pressure comes not only from the assessments themselves but from how those concerned respond to the education system. More than 35% said the main cause of the pressure came from their parents' expectations while about 31% said their own ambitions were the cause. It seems that both students and their parents are as caught up in the exam system as one another.

4

Yet, in spite of the importance given to assessments and the pressure they create, surprisingly only about 14% of respondents said that good results made them happy.

5

Happiness at school seemed in fact to come from other things: nearly half the respondents said good relationships with their schoolmates made them feel happy with school life while 4% said the sudden cancellation of tests by teachers would make them happiest.

6

The results also indicated that although pressures were great, this had not adversely affected students' attitudes to the value of schooling. Up to 70% believed the significance of learning was to obtain knowledge, establish an analytical mind and explore interests.

7

This may explain another finding: only about 11% of the students said they would study for high marks and good academic results. We may be putting our students under enormous pressure for little good effect.

Part 2

Questions 18-28

The Circles in the corn

Mike Sinclair

Circles like this have appeared all over the West of England every summer for the past ten years. Farmers have woken up in the morning to find strange, almost perfect circles in the middle of their cornfields. Now all sorts of people are trying to explain how the circles are formed. So far no one has given, a satisfactory answer.

The circles vary from two metres to about forty metres in diameter. Experts from all over the world have come to England to examine the most recent circles. The Americans, the Canadians and the Japanese are becoming extremely interested because circles have appeared in their countries as well.

There have been many explanations for the circles. Some people have suggested that the circles are made by tractors (but there are never any marks of tractor wheels). Others think that they might be the result of helicopters hovering over the cornfields, or even that they could be the marks from alien spaceships. One witness reported that she heard buzzing sounds which sounded like helicopters and saw strange little lights which looked like lots of candles. There has even been a suggestion that the marks come from lovesick hedgehogs running round in circles! On the other hand they may simply be a hoax.

However, scientists are sure that there must be a sensible explanation for the mysterious circles. The most recent theory is that they are the result of sudden whirlwinds caused by a fall in temperature on summer nights. So, as Dr Meaden of the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation says: "The wind may be the answer but it could be another fifty years before we know exactly how. This means we will probably have another fifty years of spaceship theories to look forward to". But whatever the scientists say, summer just wouldn't be the same without the circles in the cornfields.

Questions 11-26

For questions 11-26, read the text and look carefully at each line. Some of the lines are correct, and some have a word which should not be there. If a line is correct, put a tick (/) by it. If a line has a word which should not be there, write the word. There are two examples at the beginning (0) and (00).

0         Shortly after reaching to Weymouth on the south coast of England                to

00 on holiday, we caught sight of a small white dot on the horizon,                /

11 moving at an amazing speed. Surely it couldn't be a ship going so

12 fast? We thought it might still be a trick of the light, but as the shape

13 came closer, it was clear so that we had not been mistaken: it was

14 indeed some sort of a ship and it was travelling very much faster

15 than a normal boat could ever have done in similar conditions.

16 It turned out as to be the new high-speed ferry to the Channel

17 Islands, which could reach Guernsey in Just over the two hours. This

18 seemed incredible since the last time when we had visited the island,

19 it had taken us for five hours to get there, but now, with this faster

20 service, a day trip it was clearly a real possibility and we decided to

21 buy tickets for the next day. It also meant getting to the harbour by six

22 o'clock but it was certainly worth making the effort to get up early.

23 The weather was fine and the ferry lived well up to its claims for a

24 comfortable crossing. By half past nine we were relaxing ourselves in

25 a Guernsey cafe, enjoying a leisurely breakfast and looking out across

  26 the sea.

Hard work and no money

Every year thousands of young people in Britain finish school and then take a year off before they start work or go to University. Some young people go to another countries and work as volunteers. Volunteers give their time to help people – for example, they work in schools or hospitals, or they help with conservation.

Pauline Jones, 18, lives in Cardiff, Wales. Next year she wants to go to University to study Spanish, but now she is living in Belize. Pauline says, “I’m working with other people here to protect the coral reefs in the sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the sea water is very polluted, the coral dies. I’m helping to do research on the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. All over the world, coral reefs are dying. We need to do something about the problem before it’s too late.

I’m staying with a family here and I help with the cooking and the cleaning. I don’t get any money, but that’s OK. I love my work here, and I’m learning a lot about the people of Belize – and myself!. When I finish my work, I want to stay here for another three months.
