Figure skating

Figure skating is a sport and activity in which individuals or groups perform on figure skates on ice. There are men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing.

Figure skaters compete at different levels from beginner up to the Olympic level at local, national, and international competitions. There are the Winter Olympic Games, the World Championships, the World Junior Championships, the European Championships, the Four Continents Championships.

Many skaters skate in ice shows which are very popular among people all over the world.

In figure skating, the skater should skate on one edge of the blade and not on both at the same time.

Figure skates have a set of large teeth called toe picks on the front of the blade. The toe picks are used in jumping.

Blades are about 4 mm thick.

Hard plastic skate guards are used when the skater must walk in his or her skates when not on the ice. The guard protects the blade from dirt or material on the ground that may dull the blade.

Singles competition for men and women perform jumps, spins, spirals, and other elements in their programs.

Pair skating teams consist of a woman and a man. Pairs perform throw jumps, in which the man 'throws' the woman into a jump.

Synchronized skating is for groups of 12 to 20 skaters who show wheels, blocks, lines, circles.

Fours is for a team of four skaters,  two men and two women,  who perform singles and pairs elements.

Theatre on ice is also known as "ballet on ice" in Europe.

Acrobatic skating is known as "Acrobatics on ice" or "Extreme Skating", is a combination of circus arts, technical artistic gymnastics skills, and figure skating.

At the Winter Olympic Games the standard medal colors are gold for first place, silver for second, and bronze for third place

 The marks for each program ran from 0.0 to 6.0.

Figure skaters usually use instrumental music that has a definite beat or rhythm.

Women may wear a dress, and since 2004, they may also choose trousers. They may wear flesh-colored leggings or tights. Men can wear only trousers. Skaters and family members may design their own costumes, sometimes with assistance or turn to professional designers. Costumes may sometimes cost thousands of dollars.

Skaters may represent a country in which they don`t live, but not at the Olympics.

Figure skating is an expensive sport. This is because of the costs of ice time and coaching.

But prize money is  low compared to other sports.

The International Skating Union was founded in 1892. The first European Championship was held in 1891, and the first World Championship was held in 1896 . Only men competed in these events.

Skating competitions were not held for several years because of the World War II.

The first World Championships in ice dancing were not held until 1952.

There are a lot of successful skaters in Russia ( Yevgeny Pluschenko and Alexey Yagudin), in the United States, Canada, Japan, China, France, Germany, and Italy.
