Part 2. Reading

The Daily Telegraph is a famous British newspaper for adults, but every Saturday, there is an extra part for young people. It is called the Young Telegraph and people from the age of 6 to 96 (!) enjoy it very much. Children, parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents all enjoy reading it because it’s interesting and colourful.

Every year, a special bus, owned by the Daily Telegraph, travels round Britain. The Daily Telegraph Book Bus looks like a typical British double-decker bus in many ways, but it is also very different. On the front of the bus there is no number, and the bus is covered with colourful pictures of famous characters from books. This bus will not take you from place to place in a city or town. You cannot ravel on it. It stops in different places for a day or a half a day, and local children can come and visit it. Inside you will not find seats for passengers, but you will find shelves with lots of books on them. The driver is an expert on books, and is happy to discuss them with children who come. Children can bring their old books and swap them for different ones. There are also special events in each place. Perhaps a quiz or a visit by a famous author, or a face-painting session. Visitors can also watch videos based on some famous books. In 2003, children were asked to bring their favorite jokes. The best ones were published in a special book.
