Only fancy, how would we live if people all over the world don’t communicate with one another? Life would be dull and monotonous. Acquaintance plays a significant role for a society. If it were not for communication and dialogues between people, it is unlikely that we’d have friends, family and buddies. Представьте, как бы мы жили, если бы в мире люди не общались друг с другом? Жизнь была бы скучна и монотонна. Знакомство играет значительную роль для общества. Если бы не коммуникации и диалоги между людьми, мы бы вряд ли имели друзей, семью и просто приятелей.
Our speech and tongue – that is what helps us start a simple conversation with passers-by, fellow travelers. That’s the way new acquaintances appear in our life, who in the future may be our true friends. In modern world we can talk not only outdoors. The internet gives an opportunity to correspond with others – even with citizens of foreign counties – without leaving a house. Наша речь и язык – вот, что помогает нам заводить простой разговор с прохожими, попутчиками. Так появляются в нашей жизни новые знакомые, которые в будущем возможно станут верными друзьями. В современном мире можно общаться не только за пределами квартиры. Интернет дает возможность переписываться с другими людьми, даже с жителями зарубежных стран, не выходя из дома.
Despite all amenities of internet communication, it’s still hard to replace real-life communication. When you meet someone in person, you look into his eyes. This contact allows us understand a mood of an interlocutor. Depending on the situation, you smile or frown, become happy or sad. You can take a person by the arm, embrace him/her, pat on the back, tickle and even pinch. It’s impossible to replace a real-life talk. But at the same time benefits of technology in our fleeting world have become an irreplaceable thing and probably forever became a part of our life.

Моя внешность
My name is Andrew. I am 16 years old. I am a handsome young man. By the way, this is not my personal opinion. This is what people often say to me.
I have short fair hair and gray eyes. I have wide eyebrows and a well-proportioned nose. There is a small scar on my chin. It is on the left. When I was little, I had a really bad fall and hurt my chin. Since then I have had this scar.
I am quite tall. My height is 172 cm. I am one of the tallest in my class. I am also quite slim. I go in for swimming.
Casual style is my favourite one. I usually wear jeans and T-shirts. I also prefer comfortable casual shoes. I often have earphones put into my ears, because I love listening to good music. I always wear a dark leather bracelet on my right wrist. I got it as a gift from one of my best friends.
I am a bit reserved person. Maybe this is the reason why some people think that I am not very friendly. However, I am a very friendly and positive guy. My friends know they can always rely upon me and I am always ready to help.

AMERICAN FAMILY
Belonging to a family is one bond almost everyone in the world shares, but family patterns vary from country to country. The United States has many different types of families. While most American families are traditional, comprising a father, a mother and one or more children, 22.5 percent of all American families in 1983 were headed by one parent, usually a woman. In a few families in the United States, there are no children. These childless couples may believe that they would not make good parents; they may want freedom from the responsibilities of child-rearing; or, perhaps, they are not physically able to have children. Other families in the United States have one adult who is a stepparent. A stepmother or stepfather is a person who joins a family by marrying a father or a mother.
Americans tolerate and accept these different types of families. In the United States, people have the right to privacy and Americans do not believe in telling other Americans what type of family group they must belong to. They respect each other’s choices regarding family groups.
Families are very important to Americans. One sign that this is true is that Americans show great concern about the family as an institution. Many Americans believe there are too many divorces. They worry that teenagers are not obeying their parents. They are concerned about whether working women can properly care for their children.
Families give Americans a sense of belonging and a sense of tradition. Families give Americans strength and purpose.
Families serve many functions. They provide a setting in which children can be born and reared. Families help educate their members. Parents teach their children values – what they think is important. They teach their children daily skills, such as how to ride a bicycle. They also teach them common practices and customs, such as respect for elders and celebrating holidays. The most important job for a family is to give emotional support and security.

RUSSIAN FAMILY: WHAT IS IT LIKE?
So what is it like, the family tradition?
Whose descendants are we?
What are the stories your granny used to tell?
What can family albums, letters and diaries reveal?
What is your grandfather’s name?
What is your great-grandfather’s name?
Many of Russians cannot answer these simple questions. The family tradition is lost for them. And it is one of the reasons why most people have no sense of family honor and pride.
A group of people who have the same name and sit together in front of a TV set is not yet a family. Here are some family statistics in Russia. Over 80 percent of women and about 70 percent of men marry by the age of 25. At present more than 40 out of every 100 marriages end in divorce. About 50 percent of divorcees do not want to remarry. Men remarry more often than women. Over 50 percent of divorced men remarry within the period of ten years, while only 25 percent of divorced women do so.
Many young families have material difficulties. The housing shortage is a problem of many young families. Most young people don’t want to live together with their parents after they get married, but about half of them have to do this. As a result these young people have no necessary experience in family life. They don’t know: 1) how to run a household; 2) how to manage the family budget; 3) how to bring up children.
The revival of the family starts with the restoration of its tradition. Shall we have this tradition in future or lose it, as we lost many other traditions?

My Household Duties
This is my last year at school, and I work hard to pass my final exams successfully. As I am very busy, I can't help my parents much in keeping the house.
But still I have some household duties. Every day I do my room and my bed, wash up dishes, dust the furniture and usually go to the baker's after I have dinner.
I buy some brown and white bread, biscuits and cakes there. The shop is not far from our house and it doesn't take me long to do everyday shopping.
Once a v/eek I help my mother to do all other work about the house. We wash our linen, iron and mend it, clean the flat. We beat the dust out of the carpets, vacuum the floors and polish them. It's not difficult to keep the flat tidy if you do your rooms regularly. This is my usual round of duties. But sometimes I have some other things to do.
When my mother is ill or away from home, I do the cooking and the washing up, the buying of food and the planning of meals. I am not a good cook, but my vegetable soup is always tasty. I can also boil an egg or fry some meat. I also lay the table and clear away the dishes. If I'm too busy or can't do these things, all the duties are organized among other members of our family.
Sometimes I have to visit everyday services: hairdresser's, shoemaker's, tailor's, dry-cleaner's, photographer's. At the hairdresser's I have my hair cut and waved. At the shoemaker's I have my shoes and boots repaired, at the photographer's I have my photos taken. Service is generally good, but in some cases it leaves much to be desired.
My brother has his own duties at home. He helps to fix and repair some things. For example, he repairs electrical appliances when they are out of order. He has already repaired our mother's electric iron, my desk lamp and his own shaver.
Last year I was at my grandparents. They are elderly people and need care and attention. During my stay there, I swept the floors and washed them, fed the chickens, collected the eggs and weeded the vegetable-beds. I don't know how to milk the cow but I helped to feed the other animals: lambs, sheep and pigs. I enjoyed this work very much.

We didn’t always live in Maple Street. We moved into the house 2 years ago. Before that we lived in Peach Street and before that we lived in Green Street. And before that I can’t remember.
The house in Maple Street was ours and we were happy because we didn’t have to pay rent or share the yard with other people, or be careful not to make too much noise.
It was a small brick house with small windows that looked onto the green back yard. There was no front yard, only four little maples separated the house from the street.
The house didn’t have any modern conveniences except gas. There was no electricity, so we had to light candles when it was dark. There was no running water, so we had to take water from the pipe in the next street. There was no central heating so we had to put on warm clothes when it was cold.
But we liked the house because it was ours and we wouldn’t have to move anymore.

My Day off
When we have time for leisure, we usually need something that can interest and amuse us. There are several ways to do this. In big cities it's often difficult to decide where to go in the evening.
If we want to go out there are a lot of theatres, cinemas and clubs in our country where we can spend our free time. (But in small towns and villages they have no actors of their own. So they invite a group of actors from a big town to show plays.)
People who are fond of music join a musical section where they are taught to play different instruments. Those who like to dance join a dancing section.
People who are interested in sports can join sport sections such as tennis, basket-boll, chess and others. And, of course, all the people use radio or television. They switch on the radio set or TV set and choose the programme they like best of all. People who are interested in sports listen to or watch football and basket-ball matches. Everyone likes to see skating and dancing on the ice.
Some people like music. They listen to concerts of modern and old music, new and old songs and see dances. Television helps us to "visit" different lands, see fish and insects, lakes, rivers and seas. We are shown different countries, cities and people who live there. On TV people could even see both sides of the Moon.
Radio and television extend our knowledge about the world. All that we can do at home. So I think, that ways in which leisure time can be spent are different and interesting!

My younger brother, on the opposite, is not hopping to make his computer hobby his future profession. He just plays computer games and doesn’t see any sense in combining career with hobby. It simply became his favourite activity in his leisure time and is helping him to relax. I respect his choice. But anyway it is great, when your hobby is your profession.

Sure. It’s situated in the very centre of Moscow. Take the metro and get off at the Lubianka station. Then go up the stairs to the street. There is a square opposite the exit, called Novaya Ploshchad. The Polytechnic Museum is a big long building just in front of you. Go straight across the Square. It is behind the bus stop.

Alexander goes to the local metro station. He leaves the entrance to his block of flats, walks along the side street, turns left and then right. It takes him only a ten-minute walk to get to the metro station. Alex goes down the stairs and takes a train. In forty minutes he is at the Lubianka station. He turns left to the escalator. Today the station is not so crowded. He goes up. He sees the old building of the Polytechnic Museum across the square and walks straight towards it. At the crossroads next to the Museum he meets with his friends – Peter, Jane and Nora. They are glad to see Alex. They come into Museum hall. The concert starts in a quarter of an hour.

Most shops have store detectives who have the job catching shoplifters. Shoplifting is considered a serious crime by the police.

Sport is probably as old as the humanity itself. It has been developing with the developing and growth of the mankind. All over the world people of different ages are very fond of sports and games.
Sport not only helps people to become strong and to develop physically but also makes them more organized and better disciplined in their daily activities. It makes for a healthy mind in a healthy body. Sports help people to keep in good health.
We all need to exercise. Even if you don't plan to make a career in sport you still have to practice. Regular exercises give you more energy. That is why many people who suffer from general tiredness should take more exercise than more rest.
Exercise makes you feel and look better.
The best exercise is one which involves in repeated movements, those are: walking, jogging or swimming. Bending and stretching will add flexibility and feeling of lightness.
Among the sports popular in our country are football, basketball, swimming, volleyball, ice hockey, tennis, gymnastics, figure skating. A person can choose sports and games for any season, for any taste.

Sport in My Life
My name is Andrey. I’m twelve years old. Sport takes an important place in my life. In the first grade my parents advised me to go to sports school and I began to go in for wrestling. I go in for wrestling because I think that everybody must always be able to stand up for himself.
But my favorite activity is swimming. I always was fond of bathing but I could not swim. But it came easy to me when proficient instructor had taught me in the swimming pool. I’ve been going to swimming school for six years. I go to trainings three days a week. Now I often take part in different swimming competitions. I even took the first place among pupils in my region last year. We had two racings. The length of distances was 50 and 100 meters. Most of all I like to use the breaststroke.
Sport gives me health, strength and self-reliance. I don’t get sick. Now I have sport figure. I consider that sport is my reliable helper.

Modern life is impossible without traveling. Many people travel every day to our schools, offices and factories. Sometimes they go to another country or city on business. Business people travel a lot. They may have their enterprises abroad or just meet their business partners in other cities or countries.
Millions of people spend their holidays traveling. They travel to see other countries and continents. It is always interesting to discover new things, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different music.
So people can travel for pleasure or on business. They can use various means of transport. The quickest way is to travel by plane. But some people are afraid of fly.
Traveling by train is slower, but it has its advantages. You can see the country around you, so you are not only traveling, but your holidays have already begun. It is better to book tickets and reserve the hotel room in advance.
Traveling by sea is mostly for those who are going on holiday and want a pleasant voyage. On board of a large cruise ship people traverse oceans and visit other countries.
Many people like to travel by car. The greatest advantage is that you can stop whenever you like, you can start from your own front door and take any road you like. It is not convenient sometimes and if the trip is long you can feel tired.
Coach tours are very popular. They are planned as a holidays and there is a chance to do a lot of sightseeing and have a good rest at the same time. It is not convenient sometimes as you have no possibility to have rest.
All means of travel have their advantages and disadvantages. When traveling we see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home.
Holidaymaking has become one of the most profitable industries and the budget of many countries, such as Turkey, Egypt and Greece depends on tourism a lot.

Russian Symbols
Every country has its symbols. Usually we distinguish between national, state, and cultural symbols. What are the symbols that Russians are proud of?
State Russian symbols include the Russian flag (флаг), the Russian National Emblem (герб), and the Russian anthem (гимн). The Russian flag is tricolor. It consists of three horizontal stripes: white, blue, and red. Opinions are divided on what exactly these colors signify. This Russian symbol is thought by some people to indicate significant traits of Russian character: the white color denotes nobleness and sincerity, the blue — loyalty and honesty, and the red — courage and generosity. Others see in this Russian symbol the embodiment of the ideology of official nationality: “white” refers to Russian Orthodox church, “blue” — to tsar power, and “red” — to the Russian people.
Other state Russian symbols are the National Emblem and the anthem. The former presents the red armorial escutcheon with the golden double-headed eagle holding a scepter and an orb. On the eagle’s chest in a red shield we see St. George defeating a black dragon. Another Russian symbol is the national anthem. Its music was written by A. Aleksandrov and the lyrics by S.V. Mikhalkov.
Among the most famous national cultural Russian symbols we can name the балалайка (ba-la-LAY-ka), a stringed musical instrument, (ma-TRYOSH-ka), Russian nesting doll, and самовар (sa-ma-VAR).

The Russian Federation (Russia) is a presidential republic. The President is the head of state and is elected directly by the people. In fact he has much power. The President can even dissolve the Duma if it doesn’t agree with his suggestions three times running. The President has his Administration but it is not part of the Federal Government. The President is involved in the work of the legislative and executive branches.
The Federal Assembly represents the legislative branch of power. It is made up of two houses: the Federation Council and the Duma which make laws. The President can veto laws passed by the Federal Assembly but the Federal Assembly can pass over the President’s veto by a two-thirds majority.
The Federal Government represents the executive branch of power. The President appoints its head, the Chairman of the Government, but the Duma must approve his appointment.
The Supreme Court represents the judicial branch of power.
The Constitutional Court has the right to declare action of the President, the Federal Assembly and the Federal Government unconstitutional.
