The English custom of afternoon tea, it is said, goes back to the late 18th century, when Ann, wife of the 7th Duke of Bedford, decided that she suffered from a "sinking feeling" around 5 p.m. and needed tea and cakes to bring back her strength. Fashionable Tea Rooms were opened for high society, and  soon tea became the national drink of all classes. Everybody knows that cats like sleeping… they spend half their lives asleep and enjoy every minute of it. Other animals have very different sleeping habits, however. These horses may not look like they are asleep. But they are! Horses only spend about three hours asleep every day and they do it standing up! Fish sleep for about seven hours a day but they too have strange habits… they don’t close their eyes to sleep.

So, what about us? Well, most people sleep for about a third of their lives. The number of hours you actually sleep, however, depends on your age. Newborn babies sleep a lot- usually about seventeen hours in every twenty-four. That’s nearly 75 percent of their time spent asleep! As we get older we need less sleep. Children need about eleven hours and adults sleep for about eight hours every night. So, yes, on average you spend about 2,688 hours a year doing nothing- asleep in bed!

But you’re not just asleep- you’re not really doing nothing. Your body and your mind rest during this time, but a lot happens during sleep. Dreams are one way that the mind rests after a busy day. The average person spends about 20 percent of every night dreaming. That means you have about four or five dreams every night or about 1,800 dreams a year.
