Jambo heißt Hallo.
13. Dezember, Flughafen Frankfurt, 19.00 Uhr. 16 Schüler aus Schleswig – Holstein und Berlin fliegen nach Kenia, in die Schule in Nairobi, ein Mädcheninternat. Dort erwarten sie 16 kenianischen Schülerinnen und ihre Eltern. Sie nehmen die Deutschen mit nach Hause. Die Mädchen und Jungen leben fünf Wochen bei ihren Gastfamilien. Im Sommer kommen dann die kenianischen Mädchen in die Bundesrepublik. Zum Schüleraustausch in dem Land am Äquator- das ist ein Traum für jeden deutschen Jugendlichen. Jedes Jahr besuchen sich Gruppen aus beiden Ländern. Die Deutschen fahren im Winter, die Kenianer im Sommer. Das Programm ist interessant: es gibt Besichtigungen von Betrieben, Schulunterricht, Badeurlaub u.v.a. Ein wichtiger Programmteil ist das Wohnen in den Familien. Fünf Wochen haben die Schüler neue Schwester, Brüder und Eltern. Da erfährt man viel über Land und Leute.
14. Dezember, Flughafen Nairobi, 8 Uhr morgens. Katja, Andreas, Torsten, Julia und andere stehen vor der Passkontrolle. Müde sind sie; die meisten wünschen sich ein Bett und eine Dusche. Vor dem Flughafen wartet ein Schulbus. Er fährt auf der „falschen“ Straßenseite: in Kenia ist ein Linksverkehr. Es geht vorbei am Nationalpark zur Hauptstadt des Landes. Giraffen, Zebras, Nilpferde und andere wilde Tiere vor der Haustür. Da gibt in Deutschland nicht. Dann die Hochhäuser und viele Fußgänger – ist das eine typisch afrikanische Stadt?
Ankunft an der schule „Kenia High“. Die Schule liegt in einem großen park. Man öffnet das Tor. Die Direktorin begrüßt alle: „ Jambo! Willkommen in Kenia!“ Auch die kenianischen Schüler und ihre Eltern sind gekommen. Sandra geht mit Nkirote, die neue Schwester von Andrea heißt Joyce. Die kenianischen Mütter umarmen ihre neuen Töchter zur Begrüßung. „Jambo! Fünf Wochen seid ihr unsere Gäste“
