Famous British and American Songs and their Cultural Background

Like so many important musical developments, jazz represents a combination of musical sounds rhythms. As jazz developed, it used practically all the melodic and rhythmic sources to be found in America. We can hear traces of religious songs in jazz, old English songs, Negro songs, French dances, and the rhythm of ragtime. We can recognize, too, African instrumental expression, and the rhythms of mountain dances that originated in England. All of these elements were gathered and changed by the Negro to produce that wonderful music we call jazz.
After World war 1, American jazz spread abroad. The whole world began to beat its feet to the new rhythms and inventions of musicians from the southern city of New Orleans. Jazz became increasingly popular. The range of musical expression was broadened, and this broadened range now demanded a new musical style. This expressive, lively, inventive style gradually developed into what became known as Dixieland jazz. The form was developed in Europe, too, and jazz was shaped according to the musical inventiveness of such jazz leaders as Charles Bolden,

Daniel Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans on July 4, 1900. His early life was very poor and difficult. When he was 13 he was sent to an orphan’s home for boys where he began his life as a musician. He was invited to join the school band, and Louis played the tambourine, the drums, the bugle. Finally he tried the cornet. The young boy later became the greatest jazzman who ever lived, a giant among American jazz musicians. Armstrong’s style was copied equally by saxophonists, trumpet players, pianists and all the instrumentalists who make up the jazz picture. Armstrong died on June 6, 1971.

Have you ever heard about Christmas carols? They are religious songs sung at Christmas. At Christmas time groups of people sing carols, both indoors and outdoors. They usually collect money for homeless and poor people. Sometimes carol singers, especially children, go along the streets from house to house, singing in front of each house and asking for money. But there is a Christmas carol which is not a song or a hymn, it is a story told more than a century and a half ago by one of the most wonderful storytellers in the world- Charles Dickens, the famous English writer.

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor rudolph
Join in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy christmas eve,
santa came to say:
«rudolph, with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?»
Then how the reindeers loved him,
And they shouted out with glee,
«Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer,
You'll go down in history.»

Dashing through the snow
In a one-horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob-tail ring
Making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight!
Chorus:
O! Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride,
In a one-horse open sleigh, hey!
Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride,
In a one-horse open sleigh!
A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank;
Misfortune seemed his lot;
He got into a drifted bank
And we, we got upsot!

History
- One of the most famous Scottish songs, known all over the world is «My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean». It is a song about Prince Charles Stewart who was known as Bonnie Prince Charlie because he was young and good-looking. «Bonnie» means «good-looking». He was also Scotland's national hero who fought against the English in the 18th century but Charlie's army was defeated.
History and facts
The origin of the song is unknown, though it is often suggested that the subject of the song may be Charles Edward Stuart (‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’).
This 18th century song from the north of England is an example of a ‘chanty’. My Bonnie means ‘my loved one’.
‘Ye’ in the song means ‘the’. It’s an old form of this article.

Some facts from Burns’ life
Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, was born in 1759 at Alloway, in a
cottage which now is a Burns museum. Robbie Burns’ Night, the date of the
poet’s birth, is celebrated all over the world by Scotsmen on 25th January.
Burns had a great capacity for love, friendship, and hearty tavern fellowship,
and these attitudes provide the chief themes of his poetry.

My heart's in the Highlands
My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart's in the Highlands a chasing the deer,
Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe -
My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go!
Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birth-place of valour, the country of worth,
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.
Farewell to the mountains high cover'd with snow,
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below,
Farewell to the forests and wild hanging woods,
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods!
My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart's in the Highlands a chasing the deer,
Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe -
My heart's in the Highlands, whereever I go!

Should old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?
Сhorous:
And days of auld lang syne, my dear,
And days of auld lang syne,
Should old acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?
And there’s a hand, my trusty friend,
And gi’s* a hand o’thine**,
We’ll take a cup o’kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Yesterday
Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it look as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Suddenly,
I'm not half the man I used to be
There's a shadow hanging over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly
Why she
Had to go
I don't know,
She wouldn't say
I said
Something wrong
Now I long
For yesterday
Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Why she
Had to go
I don't know,
She wouldn't say
I said
Something wrong
Now I long
For yesterday
Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
