In some parts of Britain one can see a number of huge stones standing in a circle. These are the monuments left by the earliest inhabitants of the country. The best-known stone-circle named Stonehenge dates from between 1900 and 1600 B. C.
The Iberians used stone weapons and tools. The art of grinding and polishing stone was known to them, and they could make smooth objects of stone with sharp edges and points. The ancient tools of labour found on the territory of Great Britain
During the period from the 6 th to the 3 rd century B. C.. A people called the Celts spread across Europe from the east to the west. Celtic tribes called the Picts and the Scots penetrated into the mountains on the North. Powerful Celtic tribes, the Britons, held most of the country, and the southern half of the island was named Britain after them.
Celtic weapons Most Celtic shields have an oval form. They were usually about 1m high and weighed about 7kg The form of spear tips were various. (250 -120 B. C.) Julius Caesar ( a portrait made during his lifetime) The earliest writer from whom we have learned much about the country and its inhabitants was Julius Caesar, the famous Roman general, statesman and writer.
In his “Commentaries on the Gallic War” a book written in Latin, Julius Caesar describes the island and the Celts against whom he fought. He tells us that the Celts were tall and blue-eyed. They wore long flowing moustaches but no beards. A noble Celtic warrior (reconstruction)
The Art of the Celts The golden rings (the 5 th century B. C.) The fugure of a wild boar. It was found in Hounslow, Middlesex England. (the 1 st century B. C.) This helmet is supposed to be a ritual one. It was found in the river Thames (London, England). It dates back to the 1 st century B. C. The Celts were acquainted with the use of copper, tin and iron. A brooch in the form of a dragon head (the end of the 5 th century B. C.)
A silver cauldron from Gundestrup It was found in a peatbog at the town of Raevemosen (Denmark) in 1891. 5 inner plates, 7 external plates and the bottom of the cauldron have remained with the weight of about 9 kg. Its diametre is 25.6 cm. The cauldron dates back to the end of the 2d– the beginning of the 1 st century B. C. Celtic gods Dagda (a kind god) One of the most important gods in Celtic mythology. The god of wisdom and wealth, the keeper of the magic cauldron of abundance. Cernunnos (A horned god, a god of the underworld of the dead ) about 1 century B. C. Ogmíos ( Ogma ) A god of speech, who draws men by chains fastened to the tip of his tongue . He was worshipped by Celts as the patron of magic.
The Celts sacrificed not only animals, but also human beings to their gods. Sometimes these victims were placed into a great wicker basket and burnt, sometimes they were slain with knives. Celtic ritual knives.
A wide-spread image of a druid in the Middle Ages The religious teachers of the Celts were priests called druids. The druids lived near groves of oak-trees which were considered to be sacred places.
