The Lighthouse of Alexandria
On the island of Pharos 1guarding 2entrance to the harbor of Alexandria, Ptolemy II of Egypt ordered the 3construction of one of the 4 first lighthouses in history. Sostratus of Cnidus designed and 5 built the 400-foot high tower, which 6 was completed about 270 B.C. Of white marble, in set back stories of 7 various shapes, the lighthouse kept a fire 8 burning nightly. That fire could 9 be seen many miles out on the Mediterranean. This lighthouse, one of the 10 greatest buildings of the ancient world, stood for almost 1,600 years. It 11 was destroyed by an earthquake in 1303.
Statue of Zeus
The only idea we had today of the great statue of Zeus which the Greeks 1built at Olympia to the king of their gods, 2. is gathered from coins which 3 bear copies of the structure. This giant statue, 4towering 60 feet above the ground, 5. was constructed in one of many temples which graced the town of Olympia in Greece. The creator of this magnificent work 6. was Phidias, the greatest of all Greek sculptors. He 7. pictured Zeus as a mighty, bearded king, with a wreath of olive leaves over his brow. The upper part of the body 8was carved from pure ivory and the lower portions of the statue 9 were covered with gold.
We 10. do not know when Phidias modeled the statue. We do know, however, that the sculptor lived between the years 500 and 430 B.C. All the traces of the Statue of Zeus have completely disappeared, and only impressions on coins 11. bring home to us the richness of the famous statue of Zeus.
- Let’s have a rest and sing the song. Seven Wonders of the World.
Song “7 Wonders of the World”
Today at my school in world history
Teacher popped a quiz, he said, “This is easy
Just name the 7 wonders of the world for me” - So this is what we wrote:
The pyramids of Egypt, the TajMahal, the Panama Canal, China’s Great Wall
World famous landmarks, we counted them all - Yes, they got every vote
Then I noticed the shy girl who sits next to me
Hadn’t turned in her list, it was plain to see
Teacher asked her what the trouble might be - And this is what she said:
“There’s so many answers, I don’t know what to say”
Teacher said, “Maybe we can help find a way - Just read us your list”
The girl hesitated, then this is what she read:
Chorus
“To touch, to see, to taste and to feel
To laugh and to hear, to love while we’re here
These are such wonders, wonderful wonders
7 wonders of the world”
Well, you could have heard a pin drop in that room
Nobody spoke, nobody moved
‘Til someone asked the girl to read it once more through
And so she spoke again:
(Chorus)
It’s a gentle reminder from a gentle soul
We take for granted gifts worth more than gold
And the richest treasures in life’s plan
Cannot be built by our own hand
(Chorus)

Have a look at the ancient wonders of the world. They are all destroyed and it is impossible to see them anymore. It is really sad. I would like you to realize that we should do our best to preserve the new chosen wonders of the world, so that our children and grandchildren could admire them.

Each country possesses some objects which it regards as its own wonder. But can such wonders belong only to one country? It seems they should be the whole world’s possessions. You have this task in your textbooks.
