Карточка по теме «Personal Expenses»

  1. Read the article and decide if the statements are true or false.

Itsbuzzin.com was created in 1998 to sell fashion clothing over the Internet. By the time the company was liquidated in May 2000, huge amounts of capital had been spent on the venture. The Financial Times described Itsbuzzin.com as “Europe’s first big Internet casualty”.

What went wrong? Company founders spent $120 million on start-up and within a few months the company was valued at $380 million. However, bad management decisions led to spiraling costs that brought the company down. Its expected success was based on predictions that online shopping would increase to $20 billion by 2005. Online shopping has increased, but the market analysis for clothing products was not accurate.

But this was not the only problem. The overall financial outlay of Itsbuzzin.com was too high. Huge investments were made in complex website technology, which then experienced problems that drove costs even higher. The online catalog was very expensive – it had to be translated into several European languages – and it then need further expenditure to keep it updated. Large numbers of staff were hired, resulting in a huge payroll and enormous expense accounts. The company offered free delivery, which created very high postal costs. When items were returned, delivery costs doubled. Itsbuzzin.com found itself in serious trouble and eventually collapsed. Major shareholders lost vast sums of money, advertising agencies were owed around $25 million, and many staff members went unpaid.

  1. The Itsbuzzin company started up with $380 million.      True         False
  2. Market analysis for online fashionwear sales was not

  1. Itsbuzzin’s high operating costs were one of the major

causes of its failure.                                                             True        False

  1. Advertisers, shareholders, and staff were compensated

for their losses.                                                                     True        False

  1. Staff spoke different languages and so there were large

expense accounts.                                                                 True        False

  1. Offering free delivery turned out to be a very expensive
