Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! My name is Natalia Ivanovna. I’m going to give a talk about motivation and transcription.

Look at us! We are so serious and professional people! Sometimes it seems to me there is nothing that can surprise us, while wondering is one of the greatest strategies to learn.

May I make a suggestion? Let us stop for a moment and think:

what do you wonder about and how does it make you feel?

For example, I wonder, how many eyes do spiders have? Not sure?

It's a pleasant feeling, isn't it? You are curious. You start searching, studying… And the information you finally find becomes a treasure.

                 

Ship and sheep

Let’s have a look at the example. What does it mean? Curious? Why are they similar but different?

I'm going to give you a key.↕stands for [ʃ].⏬stands for [p]. We can guess it now. The main idea is to underline the difference between the long vowel and the short one.

Not knowing is a positive emotion, especially when you are anticipating a future reward. We need to develop a strategy of decoding English letters for successful reading. One of the ways is to work with sounds and transcription. So we need a lot of practice.

Firstly, creating personal flashcards help present, practice and revise letters and sounds. Students develop phonetic and phonemic strategies in order to decode short texts.

Secondly, we try to offer funny songs based on catchy tunes or phonics tales like Ike and Mike, a Fat Cat and others. They can be presented like a set of transcription symbols (and students are asked to decode it) or we read a tale and ask students to create a code with the help of transcription symbols.

Thirdly, blending and segmenting can be used.

I would like to present you a possible activity. I need a colleague to help me.

You can see a set of transcription symbols. Please, create a word and use it in a proverb.
