Wales Wales is a distinctive part of the UK. With its own character, culture and way of life – thousands of years in the making, and continually evolving.
The capital of Wales is Cardiff The Romans settled in Cardiff in 55 AD and built a military fort on the site of Cardiff Castle. Cardiff became a city in 1905 and was crowned the capital of Wales in 1955. Today, Cardiff has a population of 328000 and attracts more than 12 million visitors a year

History of Wales The story of the Welsh people is one of the determined resistance to invaders – the Romans, the Saxons, the Vikings, the Normans and finally the English.
In the first centuries C.E. , Wales was divided into tribal kingdoms, the most important of which were Gwynedd, Gwent, Dyved, and Powys. All of the Welsh kingdoms later united against the Anglo-Saxon invaders, marking the beginning of an official division between England and Wales. ( Offa's Dyke was at first a ditch constructed by Offa, the king of Mercia )
Legendary kings and princes, like King Arthur, won important victories against the Saxons, but gradually theses original “Britons” were pushed west into the hills and mountains of Wales.
Welsh princes fought hard against the English, but Wales was finally conquered. In 1301 Edward I gave his son the title of Prince of Wales and in 1536 Wales was invited with England. The official incorporation of Wales into the Kingdom of England came under the rule of Henry VIII, himself of Welsh descent in 1542.
Despite the conquest, this small nation of three million people has maintained its unique culture and strong national identity, particularly through its language Wales is officially bilingual; the official languages being English and Welsh. Welsh is taught as either the first or second language in all schools.
National Customs and Traditions A tradition of storytelling, poetry and singing began in the castles of the Welsh princes in the Middle Ages and continues today. Every year, eisteddfods are held around the country. The National Eisteddfod is the national festival of Wales, its language and culture. Its origins date back to the 12 th century, although it was definitively established as an annual event during the 1860s.
St David`s Day It is celebrated throughout Wales on March 1st, the date of Saint David`s death in 589AD. Welsh people around the world wear the national emblems and children dress up in national costume. St David even has his own flag which can be seen flying on March 1st in many places.St David went on many pilgrimages, founding religious centres across Wales and England, including one at Glastonbury. He establised a religious community in Glyn Rhosyn in South West Wales.
